SSM HEALTH ST. MARY’S HOSPITAL EMERGENCY DEPARTMENT CAPITAL CAMPAIGN

TOGETH ER : TRANSFORMING EMERGENCY CARE

E very community needs access to quality health care services. But ofen, people forget how

important their community hospital is, until they really need it. When a serious medical event occurs, time is of the essence. Responding immediately with appropriate care can be the diference between life and death.

At SSM Health St. Mary’s Hospital, we are in the process of transforming the care we provide within our walls. We are launching a multi-phase, three-year project to renovate and expand all of our outpatient and surgical services, equipping them to serve Centralia and surrounding communities for generations to come. SSM Health has made a substantial commitment of almost $30M towards this important project. Now we need your help to ensure the Emergency Department – a critical need for any community – is also positioned well for the long-term future.

Although the enhancements planned for our Emergency Department start with construction designs, they run much deeper than bricks and mortar. Te expanded space and renovations will transform every aspect of the care we deliver. In a modern and well-designed space, our specialists can provide care expertly and efciently. We are focused on implementing best practices from across the nation and evidence-based protocols to ensure families in our community have advanced care, provided with reliability, competence, and compassion.

A project of this magnitude would not be possible without support from our community, so we are launching the TOGETH[ER] campaign. To

make this important community project a reality, It will require gifs from people like you, who care and want to make a diference in the lives of others. And we know, when our community comes TOGETH[ER], we have a track record for making great things happen!

We ask you to consider supporting the TOGETH[ER] Campaign with a donation to the St. Mary’s Hospital Foundation. More information about this important project is contained inside this booklet.

Sincerely,

THE COMMUNITY HOSPITAL: A CORNERSTONE OF SMALL TOWN LIFE

S SM Health St. Mary’s Hospital is a non-proft organization with a legacy that spans more than

a century. Our mission statement, “…to carry on the healing ministry of Jesus Christ,” is a source of pride and inspiration. True to this mission, our physicians and staf provide vital health care services to all people, regardless of ability to pay.

Each year, thousands of people in our community turn to us in their time of need. In 2016, we handled 21,953 emergency visits, 10,704 Express Clinic visits, 5,178 inpatient admissions, and 1,604 surgeries.

St. Mary’s Hospital is also a vital part of our economy. With 868 employees, we are the largest employer in Marion County.

The Best of Both Worlds Our hospital brings TOGETH[ER] the best of

both worlds to beneft the people of Centralia. As a local hospital, we have a proud heritage and deep roots in our community. But as a member of SSM Health, we elevate the bar by bringing the advanced resources of a large health care system home to our residents.

PEDIATRIC E.R. EXPERTS X2

Our E.R. ofers emergency experts “X2.” Our E.R. physicians are supported 24/7 by TeleER consults provided by pediatric specialists at SSM Health Cardinal Glennon Hospital in St. Louis. This provides an added comfort to parents who entrust us with their most precious resource, their children, in times of need.

When time matters, we are here. No matter where you go, hearing the words

“emergency department” can evoke strong feelings. It is not always possible to predict the number of people or the severity of conditions that will present to an E.R. at any given time. Tis creates its own set of challenges. But that is precisely what emergency medicine is all about – always being prepared for the unexpected. And for a community, it is a resource that is invaluable.

St. Mary’s Hospital is stafed with Board-Certifed physicians around the clock who specialize in emergency medicine. Our emergency physicians can administer life-saving drugs that actually stop a stroke or heart attack in progress and minimize permanent damage to the body. In situations like this, when every minute truly matters, your local community hospital saves lives.

We also provide stabilizing treatment, and sometimes act as a gateway to other SSM Health facilities that provide additional services. As part of SSM Health, we are fully aligned with Good Samaritan Hospital in Mt. Vernon, as well as nine SSM Health hospitals in St. Louis including St. Louis University, an academic medical center, and Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital. When patients present at our E.R., all of the pertinent health care information, images, and test results are immediately accessible should a patient need transferred. Tis expedites treatment, reduces chance of miscommunication or errors, and provides our patients with seamless care.

THE E.R. ROLE: PROTECTING COMMUNITY HEALTH

Illness can travel quickly through our neighborhoods, our schools, our nursing homes … our entire community. The E.R. often has a vital role in controlling the spread of illness. By treating just a few early cases of an outbreak such as infuenza, and then communicating timely information to our health care community, the E.R. team can play a vital role in limiting the spread of disease and maintaining overall community health.

At frst I was uneasy, not knowing what to expect. “However, I felt each and every staf member was fghting alongside me. I experienced the care and concern of this hospital, and a VERY caring staf. I feel as though no stone has been left unturned in my amazing journey with SSM Health St. Mary’s Hospital. Imagine, they even sent home several frozen meals for later in the day after my procedures.

- Betty

It takes a village. SSM Health St. Mary’s Hospital works closely

with other vital organizations in the community to ensure our residents have access to the right services at the right time.

We provide medical leadership and support to skilled nursing facilities and developmentally disabled facilities in Marion County. Our E.R. professionals provide emergent care to some of the most vulnerable residents of our community. And our team, from our physicians to our social workers, collaborate with others in the community to ensure the treatment plans prescribed are understood and maintained afer discharge from our hospital.

We have other valuable partnerships to ensure the services we provide today are also here tomorrow. We work hand-in-hand with Kaskaskia College and other area colleges to develop the workforce of our future, so our century-long legacy will continue for generations to come. Tis also creates solid health care career options for our youth who would like to stay and build a life in our community.

OUR COMMUNITY. OUR COMMITMENT.

E very three years, we complete a Community Health Needs Assessment (CHNA) which

includes data from our state and health department, as well as in-depth interviews with key stakeholders. Te health needs of Marion County, and our overall southern Illinois service area, are considerably higher than state and national averages.

Higher rates of poverty are ofen associated with higher overall health risks, and this is refected in our data. Te poverty rate in Marion County is 18%, compared to 14% in Illinois and 15.4% nationwide. Subsequently, Marion County has higher rates of diabetes, obesity, heart disease, and substance abuse. All of this puts signifcant pressure on our health care system.

Moving Towards the Future Our 100+ year heritage is a source of great

pride. But this long legacy is also revealed in our large, but aging facility which was designed in an era when health care was provided much diferently than it is today.

A master facility plan has been designed to ensure that St. Mary’s is fully modernized and positioned for the long-term future. Tis is imperative for us to provide advanced care to the people of Centralia and surrounding communities. It will also ensure we can attract and retain quality physicians and staf to serve our community in the years to come.

THE MASTER FACILITY PLAN INCLUDES:

– Emergency Department Expansion & Renovation internal construction to create all private treatment rooms to replace the current semi-private rooms

– Rapid medical examination unit for treatment of emergent, but more minor illnesses and injuries which expedites care and improves fow throughout the E.R.

– Two rooms designed specifcally for the needs of children and their families

– Two dedicated resuscitation rooms for the most severely ill patients

– Creation of four specialized “safe” rooms designed specifcally for patients who present to the E.R. with behavioral health conditions

– Addition of a new decontamination room inside the E.R. for prompt and safe removal of harmful chemicals

TRANSFORMING E.R.

The construction plans for our Emergency Department establish the foundation needed to transform the overall E.R. experience at our hospital. In an expanded, modernized space designed specifcally for the E.R. needs of today, our specialists can deliver top-notch care. We are focused on implementing best practices from across the nation and evidence-based protocols to ensure families in our community have reliable, advanced care, delivered with competence and compassion.

MENTAL HEALTH: THE CHALLENGE IN THE E.R. Behavioral health is a growing epidemic. Across the nation, demands are signifcantly higher than the resources available. This epidemic creates an especially big impact on our nation’s E.R.s, which are often turned to for care when nothing else is available. The mental health crisis contributes to long delays in the E.R. and expensive resources devoted to keeping patients safe.

In our community, we are working diligently to improve access to psychiatrists and counselors, collaborate with other mental health agencies throughout southern Illinois, and improve access to inpatient behavioral health services. When people can obtain the care they need, the pressure on the E.R. is lessened.

Our new E.R. will be designed with four specialized safe rooms, which ensure patients experiencing a mental health crisis are kept in a completely safe environment. Our patients with behavioral health conditions are often the most vulnerable in our community, and we consider this work to be our mission in action.
