ST MUNCHIN’S CATHOLIC SCHOOL SCHOOL NEWSLETTER Our Vision St Munchin’s Catholic School aspires to reflect the life and love of Christ for His people. Our Mission In the tradition of Eucharistic sharing, St Munchin’s Catholic School community aims to reflect the life and love of Christ for His people. The school community works together to provide pastoral care for each person and to nurture the development of the whole child. Term 3 Week 3 Thursday 6 August 2020 “I chose you, and put you in the world to bear fruit ...” (John 15: 16) Over the coming weeks we have a few key feasts and celebrations on the calendar. For centuries the church has confronted the human community with role models of greatness. We call them saints, when what we really often mean is to say “icon”, “star”, “hero”, ones so possessed by an internal vision of divine goodness that they give us a glimpse of the face of God in the centre of our human experience. They give us a taste of the possibilities of greatness in ourselves. This week (8 th August) we celebrate the life of our first canonised Australian saint: St Mary of the Cross MacKillop. We remember Mary MacKillop and her pioneering work with educating young people that began in opening her first school in South Australia in 1866. Mary’s work continues throughout Australia and around the world by the Sisters of St Joseph and the many people who follow her vision and mission to help those who experience life on the margins. Taken from The Grapevine produced by Liturgy Ritual Prayer May we be increasingly grateful, as was Mary MacKillop, for the simple, ever-present gifts of life around us. May we embody God’s desire for all people to be treated with dignity and integrity. May we be single-minded in forming communities of peace, justice and love. And may we be beacons of gospel light, embodying God’s love and care for all people Through Christ our Lord. Dear Parents, Carers and Friends The term is progressing very well and very quickly. The students and teachers are to be commended for the wonderful way they have resumed daily routines and are engaging in many, varied and exciting learning opportunities and activities. As I visit classrooms, I note enthusiastic students working through tasks with diligence and effort completing work of pleasing standards. Well done boys and girls! Thanks to staff for their preparation, support and guidance. Farewell Mrs D’Monte On Friday 14th August we farewell Mrs D’Monte as she embarks on Parental Leave. We thank her for her dedication and commitment to the students in her care and her contributions to St Munchin’s School. We wish Mrs D’Monte and her family all the very best as they prepare for a new addition. I am pleased to announce that Mr Peter Scutti who is currently teaching Physical Education will be replacing Mrs D’Monte until the end of the year. Ms Nicole DeVries who is a regular relief for Physical Education will be teaching Physical Education for the remainder of the year. We welcome them both to St Munchin’s School community.

Professional Development and Catholic Days Thursday 3rd September: Pupil Free Day for staff to attend Professional Development

Friday 4th September: Catholic Schools’ Staff Day in recognition for extracurricular attendance of staff Students do not attend school on these days. OSHC will be open and bookings are essential.

Students Arriving Late Parents and carers are reminded that first bell is rung at 8.35am for the students to enter the classroom. Lessons officially begin on the second bell at 8.40am. There are many students arriving at 8.50 and later. It is very important that students arrive at school on time to commence the day. The school gates will be locked by 8.50am each day. Students arriving late, must be signed in by parents and carers in the school office. Your co-operation with this matter is much appreciated. Collecting Students Early Parents and carers collecting students early for appointments must inform class teachers via Class Dojo or email before collecting them. This will assist teachers to have them prepared for collection when parents and carers come to the office. Administration of Schools (AoS) Catholic Education Western Australia (CEWA) has committed to a new Administration software platform that has been a work in progress for the last couple of years. As the demands of modern schools increase, the services required to support schools increase faster still. AoS (Admin of Schools) is a comprehensive engine designed to integrate all of these services and unite them in one central management system. St Munchin’s has been working with staff from CEWA in preparation for the installation of AoS, to replace our current Administration system. Please be aware that this will occur as of 21 August 2020. There will be several changes such as a new BPAY reference number and SEQTA logins. BPAY reference number: We will send you a Fee Statement showing your current balance and updates payment details in the coming weeks. Please take note of your new BPAY reference number when the Fee Statement is issued. Prior to making any BPAY payments, please update your bank account details to the new BPAY reference number. SEQTA Engage: We will send Parents/Carers a link to set up their accounts. All families are required to set up their new account within a week of receiving the link in order to access past reports. Please ensure you keep your username and password, in order to use this again at the end of the year. We appreciate your patience during the transition period. ITALIAN FESTIVAL PRIMARY SCHOOL STUDENTS’ COMPETITION 2020 (K-6) This year’s theme is “One hundred years since the birth of Gianni Rodari {Gianni Rodari: Cento anni dalla sua nascita}”. Gianni Rodari is considered by most people to be the most important student’s author in Italy. Once again St Munchin’s representation was outstanding. Due to the restrictions in place caused by the COVID-19 pandemic there could not be a formal presentation of the Students’ Competition Prizes as in previous years. The winners have received a cheque for $50, a trophy, and a Certificate. On behalf of the Italo-Australian Welfare and Cultural Centre, I especially congratulate the following students, who are the winners of their respective year group levels, in the Italian Festival Primary School Students’ Competition 2020: Shanaya Shanaya Pre-Primary, Feker Bekele Year 3, Shasree Kancharla Year 4 and Angel Villan Yr 6. Dear Parents and Guardians, Back in March 2020, all students from Yr 3 - Yr6 who were in school on the relevant day, took part in the BEBRAS Australian Computational Thinking Challenge which is part of an international initiative aiming to promote Informatics (Computer Science, or Computing) and computational thinking among school students at all ages. Our school has been taking part in the competition for over two years now. Students are awarded special certificates of achievement based on their performance and in accordance with the scale below. Because of COVID, celebration of our children’s achievements was delayed and on Wednesday 29 July we held a school assembly to recognise all the children below. The BEBRAS website at https://digitalcareers.csiro.au/en/Bebras has free resources for all school age children which are really fun activities for all the family. I encourage you to visit the site and have a look. Meanwhile enjoy reading our roll of honour! Mrs Stockley
