ACADEMIC COSTUMEAND REGALIA

AcaciemieGowns represent a tradition which comes down from the Middle Ages. AtthattiDletheywere a common form of dress and were retained by the clergy when thelaity adoptecImore modern styles. The early European universities were founded by thechurch; the $bJdents. being clerics. wereobliged to wear the prescribed gowns at alltimes.

The usual color for academic gowns in America is black. although Yale mastersand doctors ~ay~ Yale blue and Harvard doctors of philosophy are authorized towear Harvard crimson.

ThebacheIors gown has long pointed sleeves and is worn closed. Caps. originallyrouAd. are now mortarboards; hoods. originally cowled. wereattached to the gown andcould be slipped over the head for warmth.

Caps are black but the colleges have tassels of different colors: College I is silver;College II is gold; College III is red.
