BARRINGTON AREA BRANCH

AAUW

Branch Meeting - April 19, 1993

The April 19th general meeting was called to order by president, Terri Tepper. The treasurer, Gloria Hester reported that the general checking account fund balance was $1329.40. Terri has opted to pay her own convention expenses rather than use monies from the treasury budgeted for delegates. The groups thanked her for her generosity.

Terri will be responsible for attending to the duties required to acknowledge the highest ranking female student at the Harrington Area High School.

The list of names slated for office by the nominating committee was read and the president called for nominations from the floor. As there were none, a motion was made to close each ballot and to vote a unanimous ballot for each slated office. The motion passed unanimously. The new officers are: Dianae Francis, vice-president in charge of programs: Darla Sapp, recording secretary; and Roberta Svacha, treasurer.

The organization was asked to vote on a bylaws change which would reduce the general meetings held per year from $ to 6 ((Bylaws Article XII Section 1). A motion was made and the bylaws change passed unanimously.

Betty Strouse shared the results of the program survey which was sent out with the newsletter. The top three program interests are 1. women and finance, 2. women in politics, and 3. pro choice. Surveys can still be returned until April 26th.

Three delegates will represent the branch at the state convention: Terri Tepper, Judy Miller, and Bobbie Svacha. And three delegrates will be sent to the national convention: Terri Tepper, Diana Francis, and Bobbie Svacha. A motion was made to send the delagates to the national convention as "informed" rather than

1,14-(44"4444aletedfi delegates. The motion passed unanimously. Two suggestions have been proposed as programs for the

International Forum: nuclear proliferation and the North American free trade agreement. The-bead-e trars-ha-s---explored-poe

show of interest for each program was requested of the membership. The majority favored the NAFTA issue.

In the absence of the speaker the meeting was adjourned.

Respectfully submitted,

Darla Sapp for Lorraine Tacke

PRESIDENT'S LETTER

Dear Barrington Area Branch Members: As you know, elections were held at our April branch meeting. The following officers will begin their new terms July 1, 1993: Diana Francis - Program V.P., Daria Sapp - Recording Secretary, Bobbi Svacha

-Treasurer. The remaining officers will continue their terms until July 1, 1994.

As our branch evolves, we see members electing to participate in activities somewhat differently than in the past. Night meetings seem to be losing popularity, so in April the branch voted to cut back from 8 to 6 as the minimum number of evening meetings. We are not prohibited from having more. There is talk of having Saturday luncheons for winter monthly branch meetings, and Monday evenings for spring, summer and fall monthly branch meetings, when it's easier to drive. Let your board know what you think.

We have continued to sustain our interest in international and national issues through Great Decisions and the National Issues Forums. We celebrate this commitment by sponsoring and presenting our Bafringtuii Area AAUW Annual Fall International Forum, attended not only by our branch members, but also by the community, as well as social-studies, history, and current-event classes from local high schools and colleges.

To help students who Speak English as a Second Language (ESL), some of us volunteer to tutor Mexican, Albanian, and other students on a weekly basis. This small contribution accelerates these young people's acceptance by their classmates, and therefore builds their confidence.

Bridge (daytime and couples) offers members a social get-together, and is appreciated by those who play. Our daytime and evening book groups continue to meet.

A significant change in recent years is the growing popularity of our daytime and evening investment clubs.

You can see we offer our members a great deal. Keep this in mind as we approach our annual membership drive, which will take place at our June 16th luncheon. Please begin thinking of prospective

members to invite. At the luncheon we hope to announce our 1993-94 programs.

National AAUW is providing us with Educational Equity goals and actions important to the success of the organization both nationally and locally; however, we do not currently have an Educational Equity position. Please call if you are interested; you can determine the extent of your involvement.

PRESIDENTS LETTER Dear Barrington Area Branch Members:

The first year as Barrington's AAUW president has been rewarding for me.

Our International Forum continues to offer a unique educational opportunity to our members, high school and college students and the community. Our tutoring program for students who speak English as a second language has helped students for one year. Margo Vanderbush, the ESL teacher for Barrington, told me that Barrington AAUW is responsible for bringing attention to the needs of these students, and as a result shares in the impetus for the district's decision to expand the program with additional staff. The need is still there, however, so those interested in helping these very motivated students please call me in the fall: 381-2118.

June 16 is our membership luncheon. Please bring at least one potential member. We have so much to offer. All you have to do is ask anyone with a BS or BA from an accredited college or university, tell them what we're about, and surely they will join us.

On June 1 our branch will be recognizing and awarding Barrington's top-ranking female high school student with a $100 gift certificate to Sidney Johnson's Bookseller. We will also be adding her name to the AAUW Plaque, which remains in the high school showcase.

We are still looking for an Educational Equity Chairperson, and now also need someone to head up the EFP fund (scholarships for women). Please call if you are interested. You can determine the extent of your involvement.

Every year the Barrington Area AAUW sponsors a free and public International Forum which presents divergent perspectives on important international issues. Past forums included discussion of the Israeli-Palestinian issue, the Irish issue, terrorism, and global warming.

This year the working committee, with the strong support of AAUW's local board, selected the controversial subject of the North American Free

Trade Agreement (NAFTA), the proposed trade agreement between the United States, Mexico, and Canada.

Attorney Mary L Sfasciotti will speak at the pre-forum Barrington Are -Branch kick-off meeting on SeptemE 20 at the Barrington Library from 7:30 to 9 p.m. Sfasciotti's law practice focuses on immigration, labor international law and employment issues. She has argued appeals before the Wisconsin and Illinois Appellate Courts and the U.S. Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals, and tried cases in the U.S. District Courts of Illinois and Wisconsin.

The Fifth International Forum on NAFTA will be held on Wednesday, October 20 from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. at the Barrington Park District field house. The perspectives to be represented on the NAFTA panel will be Mexican, Canadian, U.S. business, U.S. labor, and environmental. Contacts are now being made with prospective speakers.

Members of the working committee for the international forum are Judy Miller, Lorraine Tacke, Loretta Engle, Terri Tepper, Gayle Marie Allison, Mar; Hamer, and Chairperson Kay Quig Please contact Kay [381-6695] if you wish to join the committee.

1993 AAUW Convention Meets in Minneapolis

with Theme: "Vision, Voice, Victory'

At the National Convention in June, our Barrington Area Branch will be represented by three delegates: Diana Francis, Bobbie Svacha, and Terri Tepper. They will join AAUW members from all parts of the country to celebrate, to flex new political muscle, and to help plot an exhilarating course of change.

The Convention will feature three dynamic speakers: Maya Angelou, Mary Hatwood Futrell, and Wilma Mankiller.

Maya Angelou, who read her poetry at President Clinton's inaugural and nationally acclaimed poet and author, performer and producer, heads off the convention with a keynote address.

Mary Hatwood Futrell, one of the nation's most prominent voices for educational equity and civil rights, who rose from poverty and segregated schools to serve (among other achievements) as president of the National Education Association, will also address the convention.

Wilma Mankiller, AAUW's 1993 Achievement Award winner, also endured personal hardship and discrimination to become the first female head of the Cherokee Nation in 1985. Mankiller's acceptance of the Achievement award, AAUW's highest honor, will mark the high point of the Educational Foundation Banquet.

The theme of the convention --"Vision, Voice, Victory" -- is described by National President Sharon Schuster as follows:

"Vision is the dream -- the 'what if imaginings that come to us in the quiet hours . . . What if equal education became the norm? What if every girl could expect to utilize her full potential?"

"Voice is the expression of the vision. We are fording our voice as an organization when we speak to issues of concern to us and to society . . . Our publications and video on the problem of gender bias in our public schools speak loudly and have received widespread attention."

"Victory is the celebration of successes . . . AAUW is now the organization first mentioned when people speak of making a difference for equity and education for women and girls."

AAUW BOARD MEETING

JUNE 14, 1993

The meeting was called to order by President, Terri Tepper. The minutes were read and approved with corrections which appear on the May 10th minutes.

Gloria Hester, the pest treasurer reported that there is $2920 in the account, $675 is from the "non event" fundraiser in which twenty-seven members participated and from that amount half or $337.50 was donated to the EFP fund. She also reported that no donation had been made to the Community Church for the use of its meeting room. The board decided to donate $120. It was also decided that the branch would only need the meeting room in September, April, and May of the coming year. Terri will contact the church to secure the dates. Gloria also reported that the directory expenses for last year were budgeted at $200 but the actual cost was only $150. Twenty-three membership renewals have been received.

President Tepper announced that Laurie Weiner has accepted the Education Equity position on the board. This position is part of a national project dealing with sexual harassment in the schools. In a discussion of the national study/survey, Laurie stated that the AAUW definition of sexual harassment as a remark or joke "perceived to be harassment in nature" may not be accepted by the "reasonable man test" in a court case. He also stated that an AAUW term "unwelcome advance" from a school staff member to a student should say "welcome or unwelcome advance." He felt the first step our branch should take is to implement our national goals. Some of the suggestions for implementation were: review the sexual harassment policies of the Barrington and Palatine Public Schools, provide a workshop on sexual harassment for adults and students, insist that schools provide inschool/inservice workshops for school personnel, have a branch program which discusses sexual harassment in the schools, and conduct a survey on sexual harassment (preferably the same one used in the AAUW study) in our local schools.

Judy Miller discussed arrangements for the membership luncheon which will be held June 16 at the Lake Barrington Park District Building on Kelsey Road. Judy purchased flower baskets for centerpieces and made the tablecloths. Twenty-eight members and guests are expected to attend.

The Educational Foundation and the Public Relations board positions are not filled. Maureen Brady may be miming and that position may also need to be filled. Bobbie Svacha, the aey 2treasurer, has volunteered to keep both sets of books until that position is filled. Pat Paulsifer will take over Jean Obenhouse's term as the Public Information Chairperson.

Kay Quigg, under committee reports, discussed plans for the International Forum scheduled for October 20 at 7:30 at the Langendorf Field House which will be a panel discussion on NAFTA (North American Free Trade Agreement). Some final decisions on format and panelists need to be decided upon by the committee.

Amanda Paulson was the highest ranking female Barrington Area High School student. The AAUW Barrington Area Branch awarded her a $100 gift certificate from Sidney Johnson, Bookseller instead of a bond which had been previously discussed.

The tutoring program of English as a second language in which several AAU$ members participated will no4e.nger need volunteer support s# a

full time staff member has\ been hired. I st.A.3fe-tt_U1-01.44-N

AAUW BOARD MEETING

August 9, 1993

The meeting was called to order by President Terri Tepper at 7:30. The minutes were read and corrected.

The treasurer reported a balance of $2571.29. There are 60 paid members to date. The budget which is attached was presented. It is based on a membership of 70. The budget was discussed and passed. However, the budget may be amended with contingency or miscellaneous to balance with income. The board decided to serve only coffee at our meetings.

The Association of Business and Professional Women has disbanded. It was suggested that the membership chairwomen send our newsletter and an initiation to join us to their members. Lynn Talbot will be asked to get their membership list.

The dates and items for the directory were discussed. It will be necessary to get the membership list off Maureen Brady's computer.

Committee Reports: Kay Quigg reported on the upcoming general meeting in September.

Mary Sjasciotte, the speaker, will discuss NAFTA. Five Speakers have been confirmed for the October International Forum being held at Langendorf Park. It was suggested that the panelists should be seated on the stage.

Jean Nadherny reported on the trip planned for. Saturday, August 28 to the Museum of Contemporary Art. A docent will cost $30 and 12 people have signed up to attend.

Laurie Weiner will write to the Barrington, Lake Zurich, and Palatine Public School Districts to inquire about their policies on sexual harassment in the schools.

AAUW will continue to sponsor volunteers to serve as tutors of English as a second language.

Terri Tepper commented on the National Convention and how much she had enjoyed it and how much she had learned. The next convention will be in June of 1994 at Orlando, Florida. National dues will be increased by $3.00 next year.

A suggestion was made to have board members contact new members to invite them to meetings. Other ideas to increase membership were to invite teachers at the high school who have shown interest in the International Forum. Possibly brochures could be put in the teachers' mailboxes. Good coverage in the local newspapers has helped to increase membership and will again be used to publicize our activities and attract new members.

The meeting was adjorned. The next board meeting is scheduled for September 13, 1993 at the home of Arline Martin.

Respectfully submitted,

Fanny Warren for Darla Sapp
