This coming 4 th of July will mark the 240 th anniversary of Independence Day, our nation’s declaration of freedom. We are so blessed to live in the United States because in more than half of the world, Spurgeon Manor, as a Christian nonprofit, may not be allowed to exist. Christianity would be outlawed or forbidden in many places, as about 100 countries of 190 in the world are considered not to be free. Our country was founded as a Christian nation with faith in God and religious liberty so important to our Founding Fathers that it was the First Amendment when our Constitution’s Bill of Rights was created. After the United States was established, our nation became known throughout the world for its freedom and being a land of opportunity and millions more immigrated. Our state has a historic event taking place this year leading up to the 4 th of July, as a group of Iowans are orga- nizing a Bible reading marathon from June 30 th to July 3 rd some 80 hours reading nonstop from Genesis through Revelation in front of courthouses in all 99 Iowa counties. Governor Branstad even signed a proclama- tion in support of this great God-honoring event! Spurgeon Manor has taken a lead in organizing Dallas County’s participation in this historic event, requesting and receiving approval at the recent Dallas County Supervisor meeting. I hope many of you will want to volun- teer and serve as one of the 320 readers needed, each reading for 15 minutes. All you have to do is: 1) click on “Sign Up!” at www.FaithatWorkIowa.org, 2) arrive at least 15 minutes early, and 3) take your turn reading for about 15 minutes. The Bible marathon will take place on the south side of the Courthouse in Adel with a po- dium, light, and a few chairs. Churches and youth groups are encouraged to sign-up and commit to blocks of time. We will be organizing and taking small groups from Spurgeon Manor to the courthouse. With the Governor criticized and threatened with a lawsuit over signing a proclamation that simply supports the Bible reading marathon, many rights and freedoms we hold so closely are being challenged. We are blessed to live in this great country and the freedoms it affords, and we are thankful to all veterans for the sacrifices they made to protect those rights. There have been hundreds of veterans who Spurgeon Manor has been fortunate to serve over the years; and we continue to today, as some 35 veterans and their spouses call Spurgeon Manor home. May God continue to bless America! For the word of God is living and active and sharper than any two-edged sword... ~Hebrews 4:12

515-992-3735 [email protected] Freedom is something we talk about occasionally and celebrate once a year, but we take it for granted too of-

ten. This coming 4th of July will mark the 240th anniversary of Independence Day, our nation’s declaration of freedom.

We are so blessed to live in the United States because in more than half of the world, Spurgeon Manor, as a Christian nonprofit, may not be allowed to exist. Christianity would be outlawed or forbidden in many places,

as about 100 countries of 190 in the world are considered not to be free.

Our country was founded as a Christian nation with faith in God and religious liberty so important to our Founding Fathers that it was the First Amendment when our Constitution’s Bill of Rights was created. After the

United States was established, our nation became known throughout the world for its freedom and being a land

of opportunity – and millions more immigrated.

Our state has a historic event taking place this year leading up to the 4th of July, as a group of Iowans are orga-

nizing a Bible reading marathon from June 30th to July 3rd – some 80 hours reading nonstop from Genesis through Revelation in front of courthouses in all 99 Iowa counties. Governor Branstad even signed a proclama-

tion in support of this great God-honoring event!

Spurgeon Manor has taken a lead in organizing Dallas County’s participation in this historic event, requesting

and receiving approval at the recent Dallas County Supervisor meeting. I hope many of you will want to volun-

teer and serve as one of the 320 readers needed, each reading for 15 minutes. All you have to do is: 1) click on “Sign Up!” at www.FaithatWorkIowa.org, 2) arrive at least 15 minutes early, and 3) take your turn reading for

about 15 minutes. The Bible marathon will take place on the south side of the Courthouse in Adel with a po-

dium, light, and a few chairs.

We are blessed to live in this great country and the freedoms it affords, and we are thankful to all veterans for

the sacrifices they made to protect those rights. There have been hundreds of veterans who Spurgeon Manor has been fortunate to serve over the years; and we continue to today, as some 35 veterans and their spouses

call Spurgeon Manor home.

May God continue to bless America!

For the word of God is living and active and sharper than any two-edged sword... ~Hebrews 4:12

The Dale Shelley and Irma Bohrofen family sponsored the May Birthday Party with the Spurgeon Manor Bells entertaining by

taking us on a trip through the month of May. The Dallas Center United Methodist Church ladies sponsored the June monthly

party and entertained us with a game of Name That Tune. Winners received prizes, and everyone got a participation prize.

Ice cream and cookies were served by the ladies! Thanks to our birthday party sponsors!

Everyone has been enjoying the entertainment programs: New Horizons Band, Bill Connet, Dean Anderson, Wilfred Lansman,

Colorado Elvis, Lennie Hudson, Aaron Shoemaker, Pat Lydon, and Travelin Musical Memories. Music continues to touch us all,

no matter what our life stage happens to be!

While our school students are on summer break, we are still enjoying time with kids with two different groups: Kids Campus

here in town, and Kids Company, a group from Waukee. Kids Korner has also been invited to come over and walk through

the facility, and it’s fun to see the little ones being pushed in a 4-seater stroller!

The very hot weather has kept us indoors a bit, but we’re hoping to get back outdoors soon! The Walking and Wheeling pro-

gram has begun, and we could still use volunteers to help push people in wheelchairs or just walk along beside a resident with

their walker. Please feel free to join us Tuesdays at 10:00!

We celebrated the men of Spurgeon Manor Saturday, June 18, with a special breakfast with family. All men received a blue car-

nation and were wished a Happy Father’s Day!

fishing stories.

Viola (left), Gladys (right), and many others enjoy a nice morning of Walking and Wheeling.

Howard and Betty, Jake and his family, and Tom and Karen celebrate at our Father’s Day breakfast.

Musician Aaron Shoemaker serenades Maury in

Housekeeping (left), and Elvis sings to Pat (above). Residents enjoy some time outside on Motorcycle

Day (above).

Wise Stewardship and

Charitable Giving

Opportunities for charitable giving come up often in this

community and others. One of the many character quali-ties most of us are proud to have been raised with is that

of “trust.” To have faith, confidence, and belief in other

people is a good thing.

Another character quality to be proud of is the desire to

help someone in need. There are many scriptures in the

Bible commanding us to “feed the hungry” and “clothe the naked.” We are instructed to love others through our ac-

tions as God places on our heart. By giving to others, we

honor God and are thankful for our blessed life. You can never out-give God in an attempt to be a blessing to some-

one else; and, as Acts 20:35 says, it truly is more blessed to

give than to receive.

Often when we encounter the opportunity to help some-

one in need, whether it is an individual or organization, our decision is based on if there is a need, our desire to help,

and our trust in others.

But another step we might consider is checking or testing

the facts before you give of our time or money. At first

that may not seem to be a Christian ideal, but quite the opposite. God calls us to be good stewards.

The Webster dictionary defines stewardship as: ”the con-ducting, supervising, or managing of something; espe-

cially: the careful and responsible management of some-

thing entrusted to one's care.” As an example, the financial

resources God has given each of us.

So when asked to give, don’t be afraid to do your research,

find out the facts, and ask for someone else’s advice. And if there seems to be uneasiness on your heart about the

situation, remember in 2 Timothy 3:2-5, God instructs us

to “turn away” from those who are less than honest:

We encourage everyone in our community to give as they feel called to do so, while also gathering facts about those

with whom they choose to share those gifts. God calls us

to love others while also being good stewards of the re-sources he has provided for us!

For men shall be lovers of their own selves, covetous,

boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents,

unthankful, unholy, without natural affection, truce-

breakers, false accusers, incontinent, fierce, despisers

of those that are good, traitors, heady, high-minded,

lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God; having a

form of godliness, but denying the power thereof:

from such turn away.
