Dear Mary Star of the Sea Parishioners: As we continue our journey through Lent, it might be helpful to reflect on the role of St. Joseph in bringing about on Eternal Salvation. Below is a beautiful meditation on St. Joseph as a model of Fatherhood and Protector for the Holy Family. We celebrate his Feast on March 19th. Have a Blessed Week Fr. Harrigan Pastor From a sermon by Saint Bernadine of Siena, priest The faithful foster-father and guardian There is a general rule concerning all special graces granted to any human being. Whenever the divine favor chooses someone to receive a special grace, or to accept a lofty vocation, God adorns the person chosen with all the gifts of the Spirit needed to fulfill the task at hand. This general rule is especially verified in the case of Saint Joseph, the foster-father of our Lord and the husband of the Queen of our world, enthroned above the angels. He was chosen by the eternal Father as the trustworthy guardian and protector of his greatest treasures, namely, his divine Son and Mary, Joseph’s wife. He carried out this vocation with complete fidelity until at last God called him, saying: Good and faithful servant, enter into the joy of your Lord. What then is Joseph’s position in the whole Church of Christ? Is he not a man chosen and set apart? Through him and, yes, under him, Christ was fittingly and honorably introduced into the world. Holy Church in its entirety is indebted to the Virgin Mother because through her it was judged worthy to receive Christ. But after her we undoubtedly owe special gratitude and reverence to Saint Joseph. In him the Old Testament finds its’ fitting close. He brought the noble line of patriarchs and prophets to its promised fulfillment. What the divine goodness had offered as a promise to them, he held in his arms. Obviously, Christ does not now deny to Joseph that intimacy, reverence and very high honor which he gave him on earth, as a son to his father. Rather we must say that in heaven Christ completes and perfects all that he gave at Nazareth. Now we can see how the last summoning words of the Lord appropriately apply to Saint Joseph: Enter into the joy of your Lord. In fact, although the joy of eternal happiness enters into the soul of a man, the Lord preferred to say to Joseph: Enter into joy. His intention was that the words should have a hidden spiritual meaning for us. They convey not only that this holy man possesses an inward joy, but also that it surrounds him and engulfs him like an infinite abyss. Remember us, Saint Joseph, and plead for us to your foster-child. Ask your most holy bride, the Virgin Mary, to look kindly upon us, since she is the mother of him who with the Father and the Holy Spirit lives and reigns eternally. Amen.

Baptisms/Bautizos

Did You Know?/¿Sabia Usted? How do you prepare to leave your kids at a party? It can be difficult for parents to gauge when they should stay at or leave another child’s birthday party. Once kids reach a certain age, they may no longer want their parents tagging along with them, but others may have fears about being on their own. Find out what activities are planned – will the kids be staying in one location or are they going multiple places? Who is the adult in charge? Assess your child’s readiness – does he or she understand the rules? For a copy of the complete VIRTUS® article “Before you drop your child off at a birthday party…” visit http://www.la-archdiocese.org/org/protecting/Pages/VIRTUS-Current-Online-Articles.aspx. Lent is a season of repentance, which leads to life. Priests for Life urges all Christians to join us in saying the Lenten Pro-Life Prayer, and making a special commitment to help others see and defend the dignity of every

human life, starting with the unborn.

Lenten Pro-Life Prayer

Father of all mercy, We thank you for this season of Grace and Light.

We know that sin has blinded us. Draw us ever closer to you, in prayer and penance.

Since you, O God, are light itself,

Give all your people a clearer understanding Of what is sin, and what is virtue.

Grant in particular that we may see, as never before,

The profound dignity of every human life, including the vulnerable unborn children.

Give us the grace to defend

Our brothers and sisters in the womb By our prayers, our words,

And our self-sacrificing actions.

We pray through Christ our Lord. Amen

Wednesday, March 21st at 7:30 p.m. at Holy Trinity Church.

Wednesday, March 28th at 7:30 p.m. at St. John Fisher

DO YOU WANT TO FAST THIS LENT? In the words of Pope Francis

° Fast from hurting words and say kind words. ° Fast from sadness and be filled with gratitude. ° Fast from anger and be filled with patience. ° Fast from pessimism and be filled with hope. ° Fast from worries and have trust in God. ° Fast from complaints and contemplate simplicity. ° Fast from pressures and be prayerful. ° Fast from bitterness and fill your hearts with joy. ° Fast from selfishness and be compassionate to others. ° Fast from grudges ans be reconciled. ° Fast from words and be silent so you can listen.

FFFAITHAITHAITH FFFORMATIONORMATIONORMATION

In today’s Gospel Jesus is reflecting on his coming death and reminding us that the grain must die in order to produce fruit. He gives us a glimpse of how he will die “being lifted up from the earth.” His life, death and resurrection

produces abundant fruit in his “drawing everyone to himself.” Jesus is reminding us that all creation must die to produce fruit and so must we. During Lent we are challenged to accept our daily deaths – our dying and our rising in the ups and downs of life – so that we too might unite our disappointments, our daily inconveniences, our little sufferings to the sufferings of Jesus. Our little deaths will bring forth abundant fruit that will bud forth in a joyful resurrection united with the Risen Lord at Easter. How blessed we are!

RICE BOWL: Please encourage your children to use the Rice Bowl they have received for their donations resulting from sacrifices they are making for Lent. We will direct the money to help children in poor countries.

Recycling: Thank you to all who help us to recycle so that we can purchase resources for the children.
