A gallant band made their way to Stover School where we shot against Stover and also King’s College, Taunton. The match was played in an extremely good spirit and a range of ages were represented. Outdoor conditions were fresh to say the least, but we got through it and there was a welcome overall victory for Will who was made ‘Top Gun’ for scoring most points. ‘Maverick’ he said on getting his award, but those of us of a certain age will know that it was ‘Iceman’ who actually won. Having achieved some of our best ever science results at A Level this year we were delighted to welcome back two of our most illustrious alumni today to work with our students. Dwayne Heard and Graham Ackland both attended Shebbear and then moved on to study science at Oxford University. Dwayne is now Professor of Chemistry at the University of Leeds and Graham is Professor of Astrophysics at the University of Edinburgh. We are grateful for their time and hopefully a few fires were lit amongst our pupils. The Michaelmas Concert underlined the depth of musical talent that we have at school at the moment. Having said goodbye to some very experienced musicians in the summer, it was difficult to conceive that our orchestra would be better this year, but it is. A big thank you to the music staff for their efforts in putting the evening together. Tomorrow is our last block fixture of the season with rugby and hockey matches against West Buckland School. Dear Parents,

We finally got our clay pigeon shooting going yesterday.

This is always a tremendous day of sport and a fitting way to end this phase of the sporting season. Let’s hope there are a few wins hidden behind the first door of our advent calendars.

On the music front, Years 1 and 2 sang in Monday’s assembly, performing Do-Re-Mi superbly. We also heard Harry and Joe play pieces on the piano, as our musicians of the week. A special mention must also go to Freyja, as she played her euphonium in the Big Band’s rendition of ‘Feeling Good’ in Wednesday evening’s Senior School Michaelmas Concert. Congratulations also to our golden sticker winners last week: Max, Delilah, Lizzie, Alice and James. Our BAFTA winner was Emma, and Ella won the Manners Medal. Well done to them all.

I hope you enjoy this evening’s Family Fun Evening, as we kick-off the festive period, and have a good weekend.

Prep School NewsDear Parents,

Last Friday’s House Spelling Bee proved to be a great spectacle, as the competition was fierce and the standard extremely high. Children from Year 1-6 stepped forward to represent their Houses and all those who took part deserve much credit for putting themselves in the hot seat. Congratulations to our final three in each category. For Years 1 and 2, Delilah was third, James finished second and the winner was Emma. In Years 3 and 4, Lila-Mai was third, George was second and Freddie was the winner. In the Year 5 and 6 category, Theo finished third, Maddie was second and Joe was our winner. Maddie and Joe had a tremendous tussle, which lasted several minutes, until eventually the word ‘agoraphobia’ was the decider. The final overall results saw Way as House Spelling winners, with Ruddle and Thorne tied for second place.

The assembly programme this week certainly has been varied. At the beginning of the week, we looked at greed, Black Friday and the joy of giving rather than simply receiving. Mrs Jones and her Drama group then put on two performances on Wednesday morning, with the theme of bullying. Both performances were extremely powerful and the message they gave was clear.

Other events throughout the week have included the latest round of the Gliddon and Squire Cross-Country League last Sunday, Year 5 visited Exmoor Zoo and Years 1-4 took part in some festive arts and crafts activities at Rosemoor.

Mince Pies in Pre-PrepIn Pre-Prep it was starting to smell a lot like Christmas while the children were baking the first mince pies of the season.

Exmoor Zoo VisitPrep 5 enjoyed a day visiting Exmoor Zoo this week. They enjoyed a talk on conservation and endangered species and even had the opportunity to handle some rare animals. Although the weather wasn’t great, the zoo animals didn’t disappoint and were on show for the children to see.

Gliddon and Squire Cross-CountryOn Sunday morning, the fourth round of the Gliddon and Squire North Devon Cross-Country League took place at West Buckland School. Many congratulations to all those who took part.

The next race in the league is at Northam Burrows on Sunday 13th January, from 11.00am.

Year 6 History Victorian Board GamesAs part of their History topic on the Victorians, Year 6 have been creating Victorian board games (top right), full of tricky questions. They have enjoyed challenging their classmates to play their games.

Well Done Eliza!Last Friday Eliza stormed to victory in the North Devon Schools X-Country Championships, winning the intermediate event by over two hundred metres. Congratulations for what was an outstanding performance.

The Hole StoryThe A Level drama pupils (Jack, Lilli and Robin) performed their devised play ‘The Hole Story’ recently. This was part of their study of different practitioners and acting styles. The play was performed in three different phases, using three distinctly different acting techniques: Brecht’s theatre of Alienation, Stanislavskian naturalism and Physical Theatre.

Mr Pomroy says, ‘I am extremely proud of the pupils. They produced a powerful play which really pushed their acting skills and took them well beyond previous theatrical comfort zones. I hope that it will be the first of many such ventures for these talented actors.’

Michaelmas ConcertThis week the Music Department was especially proud of all the musicians who took part in the Michaelmas Concert. It was an outstanding occasion with impressive performances of concertos

and symphonic movements from soloists and ensembles alike. The ensemble playing from the Orchestra, String Quartet, String Ensemble, Brass Group and Jazz Band demonstrated a level of professionalism with their teamwork, precision and musicality. An evening to remember. Lisa Parker

Clay Pigeon ShootWell done to our clay pigeon team today who played Stover and King’s Taunton in our first ever match. Particular congratulations to Will who was made ‘Top Gun’ after scoring the most points of any competitor.

Thanks go to Morley, our new coach. Lessons will be available at school from January.
