Well there you have it! We have had our 1st meeting in a old/new location and the jury is still out! I don’t know if it was the idea of trying something new i.e. location and set-up or the phase of the moon but, there seemed like a greater number of members present than we have had in the past. It was great to walk into the room and need to look for a place to sit down. As we get closer to our next meeting using the same idea we just wit-nessed, be sure to speak up with your comments when asked. Sitting there and saying nothing will get you nothing!

I for one am looking forward to our computer gurus getting us on line and being able to Google/Bing the internet when questions come up. What a great resource!

Did you all notice the sample Logo that was printed in the last Train Order? I hope so because we need new ideas from all of you. I’m sure Dave will have one of his ideas in this issue of the Train Or-der. Since everyone voted to change our name, we need a new image. Let’s get the creative juices flowing and submit it for all to see and vote on

And of course, another thought to keep in the back or your mind at this time of year is the fact that it’s Thanksgiving time again. We have so much to be thankful for unlike so many!

November, 2016

The October meeting of the Black Swamp Division was held in the conference room at Colling-wood Presbyterian Church. Some aspects of the set-up worked, and some did not. For the No-vember 18 meeting we will make some changes and see how you like it. We’ve got a variety of mini-clinics lined up. We’ve also got a new capability at our meetings: internet access. This holds great promise in terms of programming, because there is a lot of excellent model railroad and prototype content online. Please let me know if you can suggest some interesting web links we could look at. You can also show a product, image, video clip, ad, or whatever during our usual Pics-n-Flics session simply by providing the web address, and we’ll grab it via the browser. I’m reviewing the video clinic library at the NMRA website as well as the EduTrain library. Trainmasters TV also holds great promise for providing excellent online clinics. And You Tube should be an infinite resource for us. We just need to find the right stuff and organize it into our meeting agendas. Don’t forget to mark your calendars (December 16) for the upcoming Division One Christmas Party. Last year, many of you remarked that the food and facility were the best we’d had, so we’re sticking with a great plan. Get your reservations to Chuck Williams ASAP and your pay-ment to Phil Kauffman. We’ll have lots of info in the next two issues of the Train Order as well as at the November 18 meeting. See ya on down the line, Dave McMullian Superintendent

Speaking of meetings, Steve Kellogg asked me to post the following Train Show notices. if you have nothing to do on some cold Fall afternoon, here’s where you can go and spend some time with friends and spend some money. Nice thing is, they are local. Thanks for the heads up Steve!

The where was easy with a little help from Larry Hickman, but the

date is another story. As you can read, the picture had to be be-

fore 1927, but just when is the question. I’m not sure if it even

matters. It was just plain fun doing a little research about the

facts surrounding this old station. I know the location because of

my position with the County but, never realized the history that

showed up on the Val Map. Hope to visit their library one of these

days.

And now the answer to the Cover question.

History—Wayne, Ohio

Wayne was originally called Freeport, and under the latter name was platted in 1836. Another early variant name was Prairie Depot. The present name honors Anthony Wayne. The village was incorporated in 1836. A post office called Prairie Depot

was established in 1852, and the name was changed to Wayne in 1927.

Wayne, Ohio Montgomery Township

Wood County

WOOD CONTY, OHIO

Editors Note: The T&OC made it’s way through Wood County via Toledo, then Wal-bridge, Ohio, Stony Ridge, Lucky, Pemberville, Wayne and into Fostoria, Ohio. You can still find the old roadbed and a few structures along the way. If interested, the Wood County Engineer’s office has the old (circa 1918) valuation maps on file (hard copies) and on line. Type in: ‘Wood County Engineer Ohio’ in Google or Bing and you will see our web site. Look for documents and click—follow the list to railroads, click and enjoy. Turn this page and you will find a copy of one of those maps with the Vil-lage of Wayne, Ohio shown and if you look closely, you will find the Depot on the west side of the tracks and just north of East Division St.

Remember the front cover and my question? Let’s see where that old “Prairie Depot” station was really lo-cated. Not only was it a real stop on the line, but it served another func-tion for that community. Let’s take a look!

The Toledo & Ohio Central

The Toledo & Ohio Central comprised one of the more far-flung ends of the NYC system. The Atlantic & Lake Erie was chartered in 1869 to run from Toledo to Pomeroy on the Ohio River. This line was planning to access the coalfields of southeastern Ohio. Construction did not get very far when the line was reorganized and sold as the Ohio Central in 1878. The line to Pomeroy was opened by 1882. Looking to expand, the OC acquired the interests of the Allegheny & Northwestern and the Richmond & Allegheny. The A&N had a charter to cross the Ohio river and build towards Charleston, West Virginia, but no rails had been laid. The R&A ran between Clifton Forge and Richmond, Virginia. Combined as the Richmond,

Allegheny & Ohio Central, the new company sought to connect the Ohio coalfields with the East. This was not to be, and the RA&OC entered receivership in 1883. In 1885, the line was renamed Toldeo & Ohio Central. Carloadings were up, and the T&OC sought expansion once again. In 1892, the T&OC bought the Toldeo, Columbus & Cincin-

nati, giving the combined companies two routes between the Ohio River and Toledo. The for-mer TC&C line ran between Toledo and Columbus via Kenton. The line enjoyed modest suc-cess, and by 1922 the T&OC was leased by the New York Central. In 1938, the T&OC was formally merged into the New York Central.

I’ve been fighting photos taken with “flash guns/units” for as long as I can remem-ber. Realizing the industry has changed in a few short years. I began to wonder if they made a light source that mounted on a camera just like a flash unit but, had a constant light source that you could simply turn on and off at will. With that thought in mind, I started looking and low and behold, I came across this jewel on the Inter-net. It’s not a flash unit, just a constant LED light source—GREAT!!! It was advertised on the B&H photo store’s web site and seemed to be just what I was looking for. A single unit that mounted in the “hot shoe” (not needed) of your camera and had a Kelvin rating of 4500 degrees (the sun is approx 5200 degrees Kelvin) and had a cool white light. Noting the cost was only $12.95 with free ship-ping, I whipped out my credit card and ordered one. Skeptical at first, I tried it and much to my surprise and delight, it works far better than I had anticipated. The unit comes with a charger and you just turn it on when you need it and off when you are done. Here are some sample shoots I took using the unit just described.

A NEW TOY for the T&MV

And no harsh shadows!
