Many and One.

There are many spiritual gifts and many forms of service. True. But there is one Spirit, one Lord, one God making it all possible. And one Church—many people made one because of Baptism into Christ. He is the Risen One, standing in our midst, saying: “Peace be with you.”

† Because of Baptism, what gifts do I have? † How will these gifts spill over into service, into mercy

works? † How can I share the peace of Christ with one or two

others this week?

Our Mission

We, the family of St. Scholastica Catholic Parish, are dedicated Christian stewards of God’s gifts. We have been called in Baptism and through the Holy Spirit to be disciples of Jesus. We are a sacramental community,

sharing a sense of welcoming and belonging. We provide opportunities for spiritual growth and faith

formation. We are committed in both prayer and action to support and nurture each other and those in need.

On behalf of the staff and parishioners of St. Scholastica Parish, welcome! Although we are a large, diverse faith community, we strive to always cherish

When the me for Pentecost was fulfilled, they were all in one place together. And suddenly there came from the sky a

noise like a strong driving wind, and it filled the en re house in which they were. Then there appeared to them tongues as of fire, which parted and came to rest on each one of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in different tongues, as the Spirit enabled them to proclaim. [Acts 1:1‐4] As a child I imagined this scene was a powerful occurrence in the lives of all who were present to witness this event at that

me. And so it was, however I could not imagine then why it took so many centuries for the gospel to be preached before being accepted. Ul mately, over the years I realized that the author of Acts was trying to tell those who would read or hear this part of the message that the Lord was doing something new and powerful in our world. Jesus may have physically le that region of the world, but He s ll remains with us and He and the Father sent the Holy Spirit to breathe life into this nascent gathering. I am sure many of you recall that the origins of the celebra on of Pentecost was an event that was celebrated by the Jewish people seven weeks a er the celebra on of the Passover. Basically it was a celebra on to thank the Lord for an early and abundant crop. Obviously some of those who came to Jerusalem for this fes vity had heard of Jesus and would be open to hear what the apostles were preaching to the crowd, but by themselves the apostles were terrified and were hiding. So we celebrate Pentecost as a special day when the Holy Spirit drove them out of their secure hiding place and gave them the courage to share all that Jesus had done in their life me and con nues to do in ours. You’ve probably heard this a million mes over the years that this day of Pentecost is the “birthday” of the Church. A er centuries of persecu on and many martyrs shedding their blood, the Church, as we know it, began to take shape. But wait a minute! We are the Church. The face of the Church in this day and me is both you and me, and a few million more people. But in recent months a li le virus [covid 19] also created an interrup on in the spreading of the gospel in Woodridge as well as in many places around the world. Fortunately we live in an era in which we possess very fast and constant system of communica on. Through our phones, ipads, TV’s, and computers we could witness many events from distant places and also be in contact with family, friends, and others without leaving the comfort of our homes, but even that can become boring and

resome. Over these weeks many have had the experience of virtually par cipa ng at mass that was

being broadcast from some local Catholic churches, or from Catholic churches in other dioceses. It’s nice and convenient especially if it is difficult and painful for someone to physically a end church. Normally, in such a case, a minister would visit and bring the Eucharist to these people at home, or wherever they are dwelling. However that li le virus has helped us to rewrite part of the above scenario of how we par cipate in prayer together because we must maintain social distancing and we could not come together physically in our church building for several weeks. Unfortunately many planned events for special occasions have been cancelled or dras cally changed. But there is a glimmer of light on the horizon. The Diocese of Joliet in conjunc on with the other five dioceses in Illinois have been working together with the civil authori es and a plan has been formulated to reopen churches. A required cer fica on of readiness to reopen will be required of each parish at each phase. Each parish is to complete a series of ac on steps.

In summary here’s the plan in its phases:

Phase I allows for parishes to reopen for Bap sm, Reconcilia on, Weddings and Funerals with a limit of 10 a endees.

Phase IA allows for parishes to reopen for private prayer and adora on with a limit of 10 a endees.

Phase II allows for reopening for weekday and weekend Masses for larger groups depending on the guidelines from the state and the capacity of the church building.

ALL of these celebra ons have the following requirements:

· 10 people maximum (excluding celebrant and assis ng minister[s])

· Face masks must be worn at all mes

· 6‐foot social distancing must be maintained at all mes (except those living in the same house)

· Hand sani zing upon entering and exi ng the church

All I could add at this me is the opening verse of the gospel passage today: On the evening of that first day of the week, when the doors were locked, where the disciples were, for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood in their midst and said to them, “Peace be with you.” [John 20:19] I pray that the peace of the Lord con nues to strengthen you and grant us all pa ence during this very challenging me. Our reopening commi ee has met and is working to complete all of the necessary steps so that we may see each other again—soon I hope. In the mean me be at peace.

Stewardship of Prayer

Jesus Christ appears to the disciples and sends them on their mission with the power to forgive or retain sins through the Holy Spirit….

John 20:19-23

Spiritual Communion

In this me of uncertainty, when we are unable to leave our homes to a end Mass, we are encouraged to make and act of “spiritual communion,” where we unite ourselves to God through prayer. It is a beau ful way to express to God our desire to be united with him when we are unable to complete that union in the recep on of Holy Communion.

Countless saints incorporated this type of prayer into their daily lives, not being sa sfied with receiving Jesus in the Eucharist once a week or even once a day. Making an act of spiritual communion for them was an essen al part of life and drew them closer to God on a daily basis.

St. Josemaria Escriva encouraged everyone to make a spiritual communion as o en as they could, “What a source of grace there is in spiritual communion! Prac ce it frequently and you’ll have greater presence of God and closer union with him in all your ac ons.”

Padre Pio also had a habit of making a spiritual communion throughout the day outside of the celebra on of Mass. He desired to be always united with Jesus Christ in everything he did.

Below is a tradi onal prayer of spiritual communion that many saints have prayer over the years. It can be prayed if you find yourself at Mass unable to receive the Eucharist, or even in the midst of your daily work, li ing up your thoughts to God.

The ul mate goal of our lives should be communion with God and an act of spiritual communion can help a person draw closer to that goal.

My Jesus,

I believe that you are present in the Most Holy Sacrament.

I love you above all things, and I desire to receive You into my soul.

Since I cannot at this moment receive You sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart.

I embrace You as if You were already there and unite myself wholly to You.

Never permit me to be separated from You.

Amen

Please Be Kind and Merciful to those in need

A mailing has been sent to all parishioners who have not yet made a gift to the Catholic Ministries Annual Appeal (CMAA). Please prayerfully consider supporting the CMAA, if your means allow.

The CMAA helps our parish and the Diocese of Joliet to provide vital ministries, programs and services to support our friends and neighbors in need, especially during these unprecedented times. Our parish goal is $101,300 and to date we have received $67,254. Thank you for your support!

Adopt-A-Family Update

Due to the cancellation of all parish activities and events, our Adopt-A-Family fundraising efforts had to be suspended. We will resume our fundraising when possible.

We will have our drawing for the winners of the Amazon gift cards when we can resume our activities.

We appreciate your generous support.

During this me when Liturgies and Parish ac vi es are suspended, our bills are not. How will St. Scholas ca Parish make ends meet if we have to go for weeks, or

even months, without taking up a collec on? There are bills to be paid — light, gas, heat — plus payrolls to be met and insurance bills to be paid. We have been just

squeaking by, and looked forward to generous dona ons during Easter. Those cash dona ons did not come as expected this year. Your con nued financial

stewardship and support are crucial.

A Message and Invitation from Bishop Pates

Thank you for your patience. As we look toward re-opening our parishes, we must exercise caution and prudence with regard to rescheduling sacramental celebrations that have been postponed during the “stay at home” directive.

All parish confirmations, first communions, and adult initiation sacramental celebrations are to remain postponed until September 2020 at the earliest.

My heart goes out to all who have been affected by the Coronavirus, but also in a special way, to those who have been preparing for the sacraments of initiation but find themselves unable to receive! Like the apostles, we too should “gather in the upper room” and pray together for an outpouring of the Holy Spirit. In this period of waiting, I would like to join with you in this special liturgical celebration:

Sunday, May 31, 2020 The Feast of Pentecost

I invite all those preparing to receive Confirmation (youth and adults, the elect and candidates for full communion), along with their loved ones and sponsors, to attend a special livestream Mass that I will be celebrating especially with them at 2 pm, May 31st, from the Cathedral of St. Raymond Nonnatus.

https://www.youtube.com/c/DioceseofJolietIL

DUE TO THE CORONAVIRUS,

FIRST COMMUNION FAMILIES

PLEASE JOIN BISHOP PATE ON SUNDAY, JUNE 14 AT 2:00 PM FOR A

LIVESTREAM MASS

An invitation from Bishop Pates:

“My heart goes out to all who have been affected by the Coronavirus, but also in a special way, to those who have been preparing for the sacraments of initiation but find themselves unable to receive! Like the apostles, we too should “gather in the upper room” and pray together for an outpouring of the Holy Spirit. In this period of waiting, I would like to join with you in a special liturgical celebration:

Sunday, June 14, the Feast of Corpus Christi.

I invite all children who have been preparing to receive their First Holy Communion, along with their families and loved ones, to attend a special

livestream Mass that I will be celebrating especially with them at 2:00 pm, June 14, from the Cathedral

of St. Raymond Nonnatus.”

Use the following link to access the Mass: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCrnNysq1arBI-ylNjrJ1pAA/videos

Bishop Pate has stated that that First Communion celebrations will be postponed until September

2020 at the earliest. We will keep you updated as to when we are able to schedule First Communion

Masses.

THE RICHNESS OF THE SPIRIT

Students, and most adults recalling their school days, are familiar with the phrase “compare and contrast” that shows up from time to time on tests. Today we hear two different accounts of the giving of the Holy Spirit to the church. Let’s contrast, then compare. Luke’s account from Acts is filled with arresting details: the mighty wind from heaven, the tongues of flame, the miracle of different languages. John’s account seems timid: fearful disciples, the wounded Christ, the expelling of breath from his risen body, not from the sky. Our literal, modern minds wonder which way it happened; our noisy culture probably makes us prefer the former. But if we compare the two, we find that the dazzling richness of the Spirit fills both accounts, for it is the very breath of the risen Christ, ascended to the sky in Luke, that appears to his disciples in John and sends his followers forth to carry on his mission of forgiving sin and proclaiming the mighty acts of God.

PRAYER TO OUR LADY, HEALTH OF THE SICK DURING THE CORONAVIRUS PANDEMIC

O Mary, You shine continuously on our journey as a sign of

salvation and hope. We entrust ourselves to you, Health of the Sick, who, at the Cross, united with Jesus’ pain, keeping your faith firm.

You, Salvation of the Roman people, know what we need, and we trust that you will provide for those needs so

that, as at Cana of Galilee, joy and celebration may return after this moment of trial.

Help us, Mother of Divine Love, to conform ourselves to the will of the Father and to do what Jesus tells us. He who took our suffering upon Himself, and burdened Himself with our sorrows to bring us,

through the Cross, to the joy of Resurrection. Amen. We seek refuge under your protection, O Holy Mother of God. Do not despise our pleas—we who are put to the test

—and deliver us from every danger. O glorious and blessed Virgin.
