Many and One.

There are many spiritual gifts and many forms of service. True. But there is one Spirit, one Lord, one God making it all possible. And one Church—many people made one because of Baptism into Christ. He is the Risen One, standing in our midst, saying: “Peace be with you.”

† Because of Baptism, what gifts do I have? † How will these gifts spill over into service, into mercy

works? † How can I share the peace of Christ with one or two

others this week?

Our Mission

We, the family of St. Scholastica Catholic Parish, are dedicated Christian stewards of God’s gifts. We have been called in Baptism and through the Holy Spirit to be disciples of Jesus. We are a sacramental community,

sharing a sense of welcoming and belonging. We provide opportunities for spiritual growth and faith

formation. We are committed in both prayer and action to support and nurture each other and those in need.

Today is a special day for the disciples of Jesus and for us. The Risen Lord summoned his disciples to a mountain and spoke to them to announce the way to happiness and God’s love for them. Many mes I really wanted to summon the en re parish together and announce the Good News as has happened throughout the years at St. Scholas ca Parish. But something was different: the Covid‐19 altered everything around the world and most assuredly changed even our most basic rou nes. The dioceses in Illinois as well as in other states are working toward a very complex plan on the mechanics of how to achieve this in the safest possible manner. A er all we have changed our usual way of celebra ng Lent and Easter and the Ascension of Our Lord this year. This was not easy and will not be easy in the near future. As a ma er of fact the way we celebrated and honored the graduates of our eighth grade and those of other schools did not happen in the usual fashion. Special gatherings such as dances, par es, and a formal presenta on of the cer ficate that a person has successfully completed all the requirements to advance to high school were not celebrated with a large gathering of family and friends, but in several cases only virtually. Even the cute ceremony for the kindergarten children to advance to

the first grade did not take place. I s ll, have some hope that we could find a way to formally acknowledge these students in a meaningful manner at a future date. Similarly, I am holding onto a thin thread that we, as a parish, could s ll celebrate in a meaningful way the First Communion of our children. I realize that the clock is rapidly running forward, but we do honestly congratulate all of our parishioners who completed kindergarten, the eighth grade, or high school, or graduated from an ins tute of higher learning. We all pray that the Lord will bless them, guide them, and definitely be a part of their lives as they move into the future. As far as we are concerned all of our graduates are top notch people. Let’s face it we live in a world in which everyone strives to be on top. Singers, musicians, athletes, poli cians, etc. all want to be on the top of a chart as #1. Besides even we would rather be on top and have an enjoyable day rather than a down day. No one works to be on the bo om of a friend’s social list, but on the top. I could go on and on, but I think you see the connec on to today’s solemnity: the Ascension of the Lord. In our gospel passage for this day we read: The eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain to which Jesus had ordered them. [Ma . 28:16] The Lord also invites us to join him and his disciples. Jesus departed from their sight, but did not abandon them—nor us. If we take the Ascension of the Lord in isola on from what we have been celebra ng throughout this Easter Season, we miss the point. Jesus says I will be with you always, even un l the end of me. May Our Lord of the universe bless and help us through these very unusual mes. God bless you and stay well.

Stewardship of Prayer

I will not leave you orphans, but will come to you….

John 14:15-21

Spiritual Communion

In this me of uncertainty, when we are unable to leave our homes to a end Mass, we are encouraged to make and act of “spiritual communion,” where we unite ourselves to God through prayer. It is a beau ful way to express to God our desire to be united with him when we are unable to complete that union in the recep on of Holy Communion.

Countless saints incorporated this type of prayer into their daily lives, not being sa sfied with receiving Jesus in the Eucharist once a week or even once a day. Making an act of spiritual communion for them was an essen al part of life and drew them closer to God on a daily basis.

St. Josemaria Escriva encouraged everyone to make a spiritual communion as o en as they could, “What a source of grace there is in spiritual communion! Prac ce it frequently and you’ll have greater presence of God and closer union with him in all your ac ons.”

Padre Pio also had a habit of making a spiritual communion throughout the day outside of the celebra on of Mass. He desired to be always united with Jesus Christ in everything he did.

Below is a tradi onal prayer of spiritual communion that many saints have prayer over the years. It can be prayed if you find yourself at Mass unable to receive the Eucharist, or even in the midst of your daily work, li ing up your thoughts to God.

The ul mate goal of our lives should be communion with God and an act of spiritual communion can help a person draw closer to that goal.

My Jesus,

I believe that you are present in the Most Holy Sacrament.

I love you above all things, and I desire to receive You into my soul.

Since I cannot at this moment receive You sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart.

I embrace You as if You were already there and unite myself wholly to You.

Never permit me to be separated from You.

Amen

Adopt-A-Family Update

Due to the cancellation of all parish activities and events, our Adopt-A-Family fundraising efforts had to be suspended. We will resume our fundraising when possible.

We will have our drawing for the winners of the Amazon gift cards when we can resume our activities.

We appreciate your generous support.

If you have questions, please call Liz Haeflinger at 630-910-9020 or email to [email protected]

During this me when Liturgies and Parish ac vi es are suspended, our bills are not. How will St. Scholas ca Parish make ends meet if we have to go for weeks, or

even months, without taking up a collec on? There are bills to be paid — light, gas, heat — plus payrolls to be met and insurance bills to be paid. We have been just

squeaking by, and looked forward to generous dona ons during Easter. Those cash dona ons did not come as expected this year. Your con nued financial

stewardship and support are crucial.

We are thankful for those who have con nued to mail in or drop off your offertory envelopes at the Parish

Office, as well as those who have signed up for On Line Giving. If you are able, you can sign up for On Line

Giving by visi ng [email protected]

Thank you for your faithful support.

But Your Support to Our Ministries Is Still Needed! At 20 years old, “Karen” and her boyfriend “John” have

already faced pregnancy difficulties together and this has been a cause for fear. In fact, Karen’s pregnancy history scares her so much that having an abortion seemed like her best option. She had a previous C-section at 23 weeks and lost the baby. They also have a three-year-old daughter after another high-risk pregnancy. On top of all that, Karen is starting a new "dream job" that will require all of her attention.

At their first ultrasound, the baby was very clearly seen. Karen’s response was "I'm undecided. I am further along than I expected to be."

When she returned for her second ultrasound appointment, Karen was 13 weeks pregnant. She told us that she and John had changed their minds and decided not to have the abortion!

During the ultrasound Karen marveled, "I'm excited. I didn't realize how big the baby was last time." The couple was amazed at the baby’s heartbeat and movement. She and John happily accepted pictures of that ultrasound.

After their clinic visit, an Aspire Resource Specialist met with Karen. Given her medical history, the number one priority was to make sure Karen has insurance coverage during this pregnancy. She and the Resource Specialist worked together to research her current insurance under her employer and whether or not she could make changes outside of the enrollment period now that she is pregnant.

Karen and John returned for a third visit a week later and report being excited about this pregnancy and are ready to begin care under her OB/GYN. The Resource Specialist will continue their relationship by checking in on Karen from time to time, letting her know that Waterleaf cares.

A Message and Invitation from Bishop Pates

Thank you for your patience. As we look toward re-opening our parishes, we must exercise caution and prudence with regard to rescheduling sacramental celebrations that have been postponed during the “stay at home” directive.

All parish confirmations, first communions, and adult initiation sacramental celebrations are to remain postponed until September 2020 at the earliest.

My heart goes out to all who have been affected by the Coronavirus, but also in a special way, to those who have been preparing for the sacraments of initiation but find themselves unable to receive! Like the apostles, we too should “gather in the upper room” and pray together for an outpouring of the Holy Spirit. In this period of waiting, I would like to join with you in this special liturgical celebration:

Sunday, May 31, 2020 The Feast of Pentecost

I invite all those preparing to receive Confirmation (youth and adults, the elect and candidates for full communion), along with their loved ones and sponsors, to attend a special livestream Mass that I will be celebrating especially with them at 2 pm, May 31st, from the Cathedral of St. Raymond Nonnatus.

PRAYER TO OUR LADY, HEALTH OF THE SICK DURING THE CORONAVIRUS PANDEMIC

O Mary, You shine continuously on our journey as a sign of

salvation and hope. We entrust ourselves to you, Health of the Sick, who, at the Cross, united with Jesus’ pain, keeping your faith firm.

You, Salvation of the Roman people, know what we need, and we trust that you will provide for those needs so

that, as at Cana of Galilee, joy and celebration may return after this moment of trial.

Help us, Mother of Divine Love, to conform ourselves to the will of the Father and to do what Jesus tells us. He who took our suffering upon Himself, and burdened Himself with our sorrows to bring us,

through the Cross, to the joy of Resurrection. Amen. We seek refuge under your protection, O Holy Mother of God. Do not despise our pleas—we who are put to the test

—and deliver us from every danger. O glorious and blessed Virgin.
