Bulletin Article Requests: Please email proposed bulletin articles to [email protected] by 6 pm, Wednesday, 10 days before the intended issue (earlier for holiday weekends).

Today we celebrate the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ (Corpus Christi). I have always loved this particular Solemnity. Following as it does after the Easter season, Pentecost and Trinity Sunday, it completes the most festive time of our liturgical year. Our choirs are near the end of our official season and we sing beloved anthems about the Eucharist — “In Remembrance of Me”, “Ave Verum” and favorite Eucharistic hymns, “I am the Bread of Life,” “Gift of Finest Wheat” and “Taste and See.” My appreciation of the Eucharist has changed and deep-ened over the years. My ministry requires that I am present at almost all of our Masses at St. Matthias. In the past few years, when it is time for Communion, I feel our “common union” more strongly than I ever have before. When we share the Body of Christ at Mass, I feel so connected to Christ and to each of you. When I receive Communion on Christmas Day, I am part of your joy and Christ’s joy. When I receive Communion at a funeral, I am part of your pain and Christ’s pain. The Eucharist is not a symbol. The ritual of coming together around the Eucharistic table nourishes us so that we can bet-ter live as followers of Jesus. We don’t just adore the Eucharist, we become the Eucharist. We become what we eat- Bread for the world and nourishment for those in need. We used to end Mass often with the hymn “From This Ta-ble.” The text by Francis Patrick O’Brien is fitting — “From this table feed the hungry; from this table cloth the poor. In the eyes of friends and stranger, recognize the living Lord.” The call to action is clear. We are invited to share in the transfor-mation of ourselves and the world through the Body and Blood of Christ. With all we have experienced over the past few months, to-day is such a perfect day for St. Matthias to offer the possibil-ity of actually receiving the Eucharist for the first time since March, through our drive-through Communion experience. Some of us will still receive through our spiritual Communion prayer that we have been praying at all of our virtual Masses. Either way, we are promised by Jesus in today’s gospel “This is the bread from heaven; not like that of your ancestors who ate and later died. Those who eat this bread will live forever.” Thank you, Jesus, for satisfying our hungry hearts with this gift of finest wheat. We need it now more than ever… Joan Best Seamon Pastoral Associate for Liturgical Music,

Sit back and enjoy a fine game: Just before the football game started, both teams gath-ered together and prayed briefly. A fan seated next to a rabbi asked what he thought would happen if both teams prayed with equal Faith and fervor. “In that event,” replied the rabbi, “I imagine the Lord would simply sit back and enjoy one fine game of football.”

I wish for such a dog: A minister delivered a sermon in ten minutes one Sunday morning, ...which was unusually short – in fact it was about one-third the usual length of his ser-mons. He explained, "I regret to inform you that my dog, who is very fond of eating pa-per, ate that portion of my sermon which I was unable to deliver this morning". After the service, a visitor from another church shook hands with the preacher and said, "Pastor, if that dog of yours has any pups, I want to get one to give to my minister."

Parish News

Dear Friends,

We hope you are doing well during this difficult pandemic. Please know that we and the Saint Matthias staff are praying for you and please feel free to reach out for help if needed.

First, a brief background. When the Finance Council was re-formed a little over a year ago, our parish faced chal-lenges which included some substantial debt. We received a statement from the Diocese for three years of assess-ment and property and liability insur-ance premiums totaling $1,014,577. Some financial matters were “on hold” as we needed to wait for the Diocesan Audit and the prosecutor’s report to determine these. Unfortunately we are still waiting. We paid our bills, except for the mounting Diocesan payments. Thankfully, Fr. Abraham had already begun implementing programs to re-duce spending which have continued. We also started planning for the longer term, so ministry programs and facility improvements could be undertaken. These efforts began to bear fruit and we began a plan and a schedule to pay current Diocesan debt of $367,962. In January and February payments were made totaling $122,654. Then the

pandemic hit! This added challenges to our parish and we have temporarily suspended the monthly payments.

We do have some very good news. Saint Matthias applied for the Paycheck Protection Plan (Federal CARES Act) and while difficult to get, we received $468,951 on May 11, 2020. This is a low-interest loan which may be forgiven and we will work to achieve that goal. It will cover payroll expenses for the next eight weeks. Also, some unexpected income will result, thanks to the Carnival Leadership Team’s Ap-peal and a bequest from an estate.

the not so good news is the uncertainty of next year or beyond. When will we resume Sunday Mass with the entire congregation present? When will jobs and businesses be back to “normal”? We must plan for this to be a slow pro-cess. Meanwhile, monthly expenses continue at about $141,000, down about 8% from last year and down over 17% from the prior year. At the same time, weekend collections are down. Year-to-date weekend collections de-creased over $185,000 or 14% from the comparable ten months of last year and the trend shows the gap continu-ing to widen. The last four weeks and

the Easter collection are compared below: As we stated in the bulletin last month, the first couple weeks without Sunday Mass collections caused a severe im-pact on our finances. We are grateful that so many of you stepped up with mail-in envelopes and Parish Giving sign-ups. Your sacrifice to continue weekly donations is evident, and we understand that for many, this be-comes difficult or even impossible. We must revise our budget but we don’t know yet if weekly collections will get back to “normal”. That said, anything you can contribute regularly is im-portant.

Let us pray for our Parish and for each other with the hope to see each other in church again soon.

Sunday Reflections Real Presence Is Transubstantiation

The doctrine of Transubstantiation means that the sub-stance of the bread and wine offered during Mass is changed by Conse-cration to the sub-stance of the risen Jesus’ glorified Body and Blood by the action of the Holy Spirit, and its acci-dents (like color, shape, taste etc.), remain the same.

Padre Pio’s Prayer of Thanksgiving after Communion

Stay with me, Lord, for it is necessary to have You present so that I do not forget You. You know how easily I abandon You.

Stay with me, Lord, because I am weak and I need Your strength, that I may not fall so often.

Stay with me, Lord, for You are my life, and without You, I am without fervor.

Stay with me, Lord, for You are my light, and without You, I am in darkness.

Stay with me, Lord, to show me Your will. Stay with me, Lord, so that I hear Your voice and follow You.

Stay with me, Lord, for I desire to love You very much, and always be in Your company.

Stay with me, Lord, if You wish me to be faithful to You.

Stay with me, Lord, for as poor as my soul is, I want it to be a place of consolation for You, a nest of love.

Stay with me, Jesus, for it is getting late, the day is coming to a close, and life passes; death, judg-ment, eternity approach. It is necessary to renew my strength.

Update from the Pastoral Council’s Task Force on Restoration of Masses with a Congregation

That was how the solemn feast of the Body and Blood of Christ was formerly known – the greatest gift Jesus has be-queathed to us. When Church teaches us that the Eucharist is "the source and summit of the Christian life" (Lumen Gentium, no. 11; cf. Catechism of the Catholic Church, no. 1324), it means at least two things. First, that Christian spir-ituality flows from the Eucharist as its source, the way light streams forth from the sun. And second, that Christian spir-ituality is supremely realized in and or-

dered to the Eucharist as its summit or highpoint – that to which all of our ac-tions should ultimately be directed. Thus our Sunday worship is of supreme im-portance for our life. Many parishes have revived the custom of Corpus Christi processions this day carrying the Blessed Sacrament through the streets, singing hymns of adoration and praise.

With the lockdown preventing us from physically participating in the Holy Eu-charist in church, we thank God for the opportunity of the virtual Mass. As we

are offering Holy Com-munion to those who wish, our St. Matthias Task Force is making great efforts to plan for a full but incremental restoration of Mass with the people, taking into top considera-tion everyone’s safety.

Let us continue our practice of being enriched by the Eucharist each Sunday and then living its message in the world of our daily life.

Celebrating Our Faith: Liturgy

Today is the Feast of “Corpus Christi”

This weekend, in addition to our regular online Mass which can be viewed starting at 5 pm on Saturday, we will also offer Drive-thru Communion at three different times.

It is expected that all individuals in the parish, including priests, deacons, all ministers of the liturgy, and all of the faithful be responsible for making health decisions that are appropriate for themselves. While the parish is making every effort to mini-mize the transmission of disease, all risk cannot be eliminated. We emphasize that anyone who has reason to believe that they have been exposed to COVID-19, a fever, or respiratory issues should stay at home. Anyone simply “not feeling well” should also stay at home. In addition, everyone must wear facemasks and keep the required 6 feet of distance between households and while approaching the Eucharistic ministers.

Below are Some of the Drive-Thru Communion Safety Measures That We Are Undertaking:

1. Disinfection of communion station table after set-up. 2. Hand sanitizer and disinfectant wipes for the Eucharistic Minister on the table. 3. Masks for all, a limited number of disposable ones will be available. 4. Temperature checks for all volunteers/ministers. 5. Hospitality ministers and maintenance staff to guide traffic flow. 6. Numbered lanes, multiple communion stations (tables), signage and reminders. Check this week’s St. Matthias Family Connect for last minute updates.

The end of any school year is always bittersweet. This year is exceptionally so as we bid a fond farewell to our principal, Ms. Eileen

Brett. She has diligently served our school for the past three years and has left an indelible mark upon us. Her mark speaks of faithful stewardship, academic progress, and hope for the future. Ms. Brett’s legacy of educational leadership ensures that Saint Matthias School (SMS) will continue to be a vibrant learning community steeped in Catholic faith and tradition. An expert in teaching pedagogy, Ms. Brett made professional development a top priority for the SMS faculty. English and Language Arts (ELA) teachers attended workshops from the nation’s leading experts in literacy. Math teachers participated in a monthly math literacy program designed to boost student achievement and comprehension. They also worked collaboratively to select a new math curriculum series for the upcoming school year. Professional book clubs gave teachers the opportunity to explore current trends in the educational field. One such book was Discipline with Dignity, which emphasizes the importance of dignity, respect, and self-control with regard to classroom management. Year-round training in backward design taught teachers how to achieve specific learning goals by designing key learning experiences and implementing instructional techniques designed to meet student needs. The Workshop Model of learning has been implemented in all classrooms and at all grade levels. It includes the elements of an opening, mini-lesson, work time, small group instruction, and a debriefing. As a champion of reading, Ms. Brett made changes to the school schedule to allot for more independent reading time for all students. Educational research shows that there is a strong correlation between time spent reading and reading

achievement. With this as her mantra, Ms. Brett stocked classroom libraries with an abundance of reading materials, implemented after-school book clubs, engaged in classroom read-alouds, promoted the continued use of the Accelerated Reading program, and made library time part of the ELA curriculum. Strong professional development benefits teachers, but, most importantly, it benefits the students. Ms. Brett was instrumental in taking the initial steps to establish a recognized Middle School as per the Association for Middle Level Education. Ms. Brett has taken great strides in preparing the school for future progress and success. One such step has been to prepare COGNIA documents (www.cognia.org) for the 2020 accreditation of St. Matthias School. Although the process is temporarily on hold due to the pandemic, it is expected to resume in the fall. STREAM (Science, Technology, Reading, Engineering, Art and Math) and the student-led video production are two initiatives that Ms. Brett has seen through to completion. Plans are already underway to incorporate Makerspace into the learning curriculum next year. Ms. Brett is expanding student access to technology by acquiring Chrome books for grades 1 through 8. Additionally, government grants are being used to purchase i-Ready for the upcoming school year. i-Ready is an interactive online learning environment designed to provide individualized instruction and assessment based on student needs for math and ELA. Finally, we wish to acknowledge your extraordinary working relationships with the Home School Association (HSA). Together, you created amazing and memorable events and activities for the children.

Discovering God: Formation Thank You Eileen Brett!

It is with grateful hearts that we thank you, Ms. Brett, for all that you have done for the school and its community. You will be remembered fondly, prayed for daily, and wished all the best. In honor of your beloved Irish heritage, we pray this Irish blessing upon you:

May the road rise up to meet you.

May the wind be always at your back. May the sun shine warm upon your face,

the rains fall soft upon your fields and until we meet again, may God hold you in the palm of His hand.

Being Good Stewards

Stewardship Reflection Jun 14, 2020 Feast of Corpus Christi

“Because there is one bread, we who are many are one body, for we all partake of the one bread.” (1 Corin-thians 10:17) As disciples of Jesus, we are called to lead holy lives and invite others to join us. Living a stewardship lifestyle, be-ing grateful and generous with our gifts, serves a twofold purpose. One, it helps build God’s kingdom here on earth. Two, it helps us strengthen each other’s relation-ship with God the Father, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit. It becomes our road map to Heaven. Let’s help each oth-er get there!

Discovering God: Formation

On Sunday, May 31, the Catholic Community celebrated the beautiful, moving feast of Pentecost, and in this spirit on fire, the worshiping community of St. Matthias blessed our 2020 graduates. The Baccalaureate Mass celebrated this beautiful class of graduates. The Baccalaureate Mass is available on the parish Youtube channel. The student graduates and

their families gather in cars in the school parking lot at to join together for their Commencement Exercises. Diplomas, awards and scholarships were presented.

The Baccalaureate Mass and the Graduation Ceremony were both exciting and inspiring. It was a moving experience to both celebrate and bless these graduates as they move

forward on their adventurous journey. Our parish photographer, Marilyn Parente has provided all of the graduate families with an album, which is so beautifully presented. You can access the albums at: https://www.photoscribblings.com/stmatthiasschool
