Pale-browed Tinamou (Crypturellus transfasciatus) On 1-08 heard down in the valley at Abra Porculla. Ornate Tinamou (Nothoprocta ornate) On 20-08 1 ex. Bosque Unchog. Andean Tinamou (Nothoprocta pentlandii) On 25-08 20+ near San Pedro de Caste, Upper Santa Eulalia. During our search for the Rufous-breasted Warbling-Finch we regularly flushed Andean Tinamou. GREBES - PODICIPEDIDAE White-tufted Grebe (Rollandia Rolland) On 17-08 3exx.Lake Junin. Silvery Grebe (podiceps occipitalis) On 17-08 15 exx. Lake Junin. * JUNIN GREBE (Podiceps taczanowskii) On 17-08 2 exx. Lake Junin. The total population is estimated at less than 400 birds. Considered Critical. PELICANS - PELICANIDE Peruvian Pelican (Pelecanus thagus) Up to 10 exx.along the coast near Puerto Huarmey and Huacho on 14 and 15-08. BOOBIES - SULIDAE Peruvian Booby (Sula variegate) Rather common along the coast near Huacho on 14 and 15-08. CORMORANTS - PHALICROCORACIDAE Neotropic Cormorant (Phalacrocorax brasilianus) Common along the coast near Huacho on 14 and 15-08. Guanay Cormorant (Phalacrocorax bougainvillii) On 15-08 7 exx.near El Paraiso. Red-legged Cormorant (Phalacrocorax gaimardi) On 14-08 2 exx.at Puerto Huarmey. HERONS, EGRETS AND BITTERNS - ARDEIDAE Great Egret (Casmorodius alba) Scattered seen in the rice fields in the valleys along our route. Little Blue Heron Egretta caerulea) On 30-07 1 ex. near Olmos. We also found a (deserted?) nest with 3 eggs. NEW WORLD QUAIL - ODONTOPHORIDAE Rufous-breasted Wood-Quail (Odontophotus speciosus) On 19-08 heard at the Paty Trail. RAILS, GALLINULES AND COOTS -RALLIDAE Uniform Crake (Amaurolimas concolor) On 9-08 twice seen while crossing a track at site, 4 km.west of Rioja. Spotted Rail (Pardirallus maculates) On 31-07 1 ex. well observed in the scope at a small swamp near Olmos. Blackish Rail (Pardirallis nigricans) On 9-08 excellent views of 1 ex.at a swamp near our lunch site 4 km.west of Rioja. At least 3 more birds were heard.

Blue Ground-Dove (Claravis pretiosa) On 2-08 4 exx. Chirinos road near Tamborapa(Jaen) On 7,8 and 9-08 up to 4 exx.daily in the Tarapoto area. Bare-faced Ground-Dove (Metriopelia ceciliae) On 15, 16 and 24-08 up to 20 exx.in the Santa Eulalia Valley. Black-winged Ground-Dove (Metriopelia melanoptera) On 16-08 3 exx. upper Santa Eulalia Valley. White-tipped Dove (Leptotila verreauxi) Almost daily observed in Northern Peru.(11 out of 16 days) from single birds up to 20 in the Marañon Valley. White-throated Quail-Dove (Geotrygon frenata) On 22-08 1 heard on the Paty Trail. On 23-08 good views of 1 ex. walking in the open on the Paty Trail.

Red-masked Parakeet (Aratinga erythrogenys) On 30-07 20 and on 31-07 up to 50 exx.at Quebrada Limon. We had good views of perched birds. Considered “near-threatened.” White-eyed Parakeet (Aratinga leucopthalmus) On 4 and 5-08 10-30 exx.upper Abra Patricia. Maroon-tailed Parakeet (Pyrrhura melanura) On 8-08 2 exx. near Tarapoto. On 9-08 2 exx.Juan Guerra. Mountain Parakeet (Bolborhynchus aurifrons) On 16-08 4 exx. Santa Eulalia. Andean Parakeet (Bolborhynchus orbygnesius) On 25-08 20 exx. Upper Santa Eulalia Valley. Blue-winged Parrotlet (Forpus xanthopterygius) On 6-08 50+ near Aguas Verdes. Pacific Parrotlet (Forpus coelestis) On 30 en 31-07 common (50+) at Quebrada Frejolillo (Limon). On 1-08 6 exx.near Jaen. CUCKOOS - CUCULIDAE Hoatzin (Opisthocomus hoazin) On 9-08 15 exx. along the rio at Juan Guerra. Tarapoto. Squirrel Cuckoo (Piaya cayana) A total of 9 exx.on 6 dates in Northern Peru. Smooth-billed Ani (Crotophaga ani) Locally common on the east side of Abra Patricia. Groove-billed Ani (crotophaga sulcirostris) Common throughout the trip in the dry, arid regions. Note: We did not always bother to identify any Ani we observed. OWLS - STRIGIDAE Tropical Screech-Owl (Megascops choliba) On 6-08 1 ex.calling in the garden of hotel La Ribera, Rioja. Peruvian Screech-Owl (Megascops rocoratus) On 30-07 1 ex.calling near the campsite at Quebrada Frejelillo (Limon).

Scrub Nightjar (Caprimulgus anthonyi) On 30-07 1 ex.in broad daylight at Batan Grande. On 31-07 1 ex.flushed at Quebrada Frejelillo (Limon). Lyre-tailed Nightjar (Uropsalis lyra) On 3-08 astonishing views of a very responsive male at Valle Hermosa,Abra Patricia.On 6-08 1 ex.heard near the restaurant at the Afluente bridge. Swallow-tailed Nightjar (Uropsalis segmenata) In the early morning of 11-08 we had 2 female type birds on the road near Leimebamba. SWIFTS - APODIDAE White-chested Swift (Cypseloides lemosi) On 2 exx.Abra Patricia, rocky slope near the Ridge trail. Very rare in north-west Peru White-collared Swift (Streptoprocne zonaris) Up to 20 exx. observed in the Abra Patricia area. On 11-08 200+ late afternoon near Balsas. Pale-rumped Swift (Chaetura egregia) Daily observed from Afluente – Aguas Verde – Rioja – Tarapoto. On 8-08 50+ along the Yurimaguas Road, Tarapoto.
