• Hunger Relief: Programs and activities aimed at eliminating childhood hunger and encouraginggood nutrition in lower-income families

HUNTSMAN CANCER INSTITUTEOur employees support Huntsman Cancer Institute(HCI) through a payroll deduction plan and we donate a portion of all Athena bottled water we sell to HuntsmanCancer Institute. HCI has thanked our support by naminga patient room in the employees’ honor.

Thanks to Sysco and other supporters, HCI continues tobe the world leader in cancer genetics. No matter wherethey live, cancer patients and their families benefit fromtheir research. Dozens of new treatments have becomeavailable as a “best, last hope” for people battling latestage cancers. Last year alone, HCI was able to offerdozens of new cancer treatments to patients who havebeen told their prognosis is terminal through their Phase I clinical trials.

HCI is better positioned than any other cancer center inthe world to deliver on the promise of personalized medi-cine. HCI manages and operates the Utah PopulationDatabase, the largest resource of its kind anywhere. Thisinformation helps researchers look for genetic patterns ofcancer and identify risk.

PRO STARTFrom culinary techniques to management skills, ProStart’sindustry-driven curriculum provides real-life experienceopportunities and builds practical skills and a foundationthat will last a lifetime.

By bringing together the industry and the classroom,ProStart gives students a platform to discover new interests and talents to open doors for fulfilling careers.

It happens through a curriculum that includes all facetsof the industry and sets a high standard of excellence forstudents and the industry. ProStart students spend twoyears in the classroom mastering the fundamental man-agement and culinary skills needed for success. ProStarttrains students on industry-specific skills that can be usedin all aspects of the restaurant and foodservice industry.

ProStart Students leave the program with employabilityskills – like leadership, accountability, teamwork and responsibility – that they can take with them to positionsin all industries.

We are proud to offer scholarships for ProStart graduatesto continue their culinary training.

TASTE OF THE WASATCH – 100% of funds stay inUtah to fight hunger!In its twelfth year raising awareness and funds to fighthunger in Utah, Taste of the Wasatch funds help:

• Enroll more eligible kids in school breakfast, after-school snacks and meals, and their familiesin SNAP (food stamps)

• Teach at-risk families how to plan, shop for, and prepare healthy, low-cost meals at home

• Meet the pressing demands on local food pantries, food banks and soup kitchens to provide for more nutritious food

• Increase awareness of hunger and solutions to it

HISTORYThe Sysco Intermountain family tree has deep roots in the Intermountainarea. Our history here goes back more than 40 years, making us uniquelyqualified to meet–and exceed–our customers’ needs and expectations.Sterling-Keeley’s, located in Pocatello, Idaho, serviced Southeastern andWestern Idaho and parts of Montana. Purchased by Sysco Foods in 1973,the company and its employees relocated to Salt Lake City. In 1981 thename was changed to Sysco Intermountain, moving into our current location in 2000.

Stoneground BakeryBaked goods from our own communityStone Ground Bakery, Inc. was established in 1979 by Hans Schmerse as a smallEuropean bakery. Using old world baking techniques, centuries-old familyrecipes and a passion for bread, Stone Ground soon was recognized as thepremier bakery in Utah.

Derrick Schmerse and Tammy Hines continue to use a traditional style of baking and original recipes. In addition, master baker Derrick Schmerse has traveled the country studying with renowned bakers and learning old-world secrets and new-world techniques. The result is bread with succulent aroma, full flavor, consistent texture and perfect crust.

In 2011 Stone Ground Bakery, Inc. bought a new building and purchased the finestof baking equipment from around the world. The new facility and equipment allows for higher volume, a more consistent product and retaining quality withoutincreasing price.

Stone Ground Bakery delivers its freshly baked products throughout the WasatchFront. We are proud of our alliance with Stoneground Bakery, allowing us to distribute their fine products throughout the Intermountain West.
