Synthesis of Mesoporous MCM-41 Materials withLow-Power Microwave Heating

Crystalline, high-surface-area, hexagonal mesoporous MCM-41 having uniformpore sizes and good thermal stability was successfully synthesized at 90�–120�Cin 30min using low-power microwave irradiation. This appears to be the first com-prehensive and quantitative investigation of the comparatively rapid synthesis ofmesoporous MCM-41 using low-power microwave heating of 80W (90�C) and120W (120�C). The influence of reaction temperature and the duration of heatingwere carefully investigated, and the calcined MCM-41 materials were characterizedby XRD, SEM, TEM, nitrogen adsorption, TGA, and FT-IR. The mesoporousMCM-41 product synthesized in 30min at 120W and calcined at 550�C had a veryhigh surface area of 1438m2=g and was highly ordered, containing uniform poreswith diameters in the range of 3.5–4.5 nm. The wall thickness of the materials highlydepended on the power of the microwave energy used during synthesis. Synthesis ofthe mesoporous MCM-41 products at 120�C resulted in a structure with thinnerwalls. The mesoporous MCM-41 materials synthesized in the present work had goodthermal stability.

Introduction

Since its first discovery by Mobil oil researchers, hexagonal MCM-41’s possible useas a catalyst and catalyst support has attracted much attention (Corma, 1997; Kresgeet al., 1992; Sayari, 2000; Ying et al., 1999). Pure siliceous mesoporous molecularsieves have a limited use as catalysts since it is necessary to incorporate metal centersas active sites in the silicate framework (Arends et al., 1997; Corma and Garcia,2002; Gates, 1992; Velu et al., 2002). Notably, mesoporous MCM-41 containingmetal ions like Al, V, Fe, Mn, B, Ga, Ti, Zr, and Cs have previously been synthesizedand their catalytic properties have been explored (Bal et al., 2000; Corma, 1997; Limand Haller, 1999; Tanev et al., 1994; Tuel, 1999; Wang et al., 2001; Ying et al., 1999).

Molecular sieves are usually synthesized with hydrothermal treatment of rawgels in autoclaves. However, after the first application of microwave irradiationfor the synthesis of zeolites (Chu et al., 1990), utilization of this new method forthe production of such mesoporous materials have increased considerably (Arafatet al., 1993; Bonaccorsi and Proverbio, 2003; Garcia et al., 1997; Girnus et al.,1995; Lohse et al., 1996; Newalkar et al., 2001a, 2001b; Zhao et al., 1997; Zhouet al., 2010). Microwave irradiation has been successfully applied in chemistry andhas become a widely accepted nonconventional energy source for performingorganic synthesis. Spectacular accelerations, higher yields under milder reaction con-ditions, and higher product purities have all been reported. For that reason micro-wave irradiation is now well established as a clean, cheap, and rapid method forefficient heating, providing phase purity with high yields, rapid kinetics, and highreproducibility (Galema, 1997; Komarneni, 2003; Namboodiri and Varma, 2001;Tompsett et al., 2006; Wang et al., 2007).

This article reports the determination of the optimum conditions for the micro-wave synthesis of highly ordered, mesoporous MCM-41 having high surface areasand uniform pore sizes. It was found that microwave-assisted aging was a veryefficient procedure to accelerate the crystallization. Successful synthesis requiredlow power (80W and 120W) of microwave irradiation that heated the contents ofthe autoclave to 90�C and 120�C for not more than 30min. The mesoporousMCM-41 was characterized by XRD, SEM, TEM, nitrogen adsorption, TGA, andFT-IR. Subsequent articles will report the optimum conditions for the microwavesynthesis of catalytic mesoporous MCM-41 possessing active sites containing selec-ted concentrations of iron, cobalt, copper, or nickel.

Experimental Section

Materials

An aqueous solution of sodium silicate, containing 27wt.% SiO2 (Aldrich) wasused as the silica source, and cetyl trimethylammonium bromide (CTABr,(C16H33)N(CH3)3Br), Merck, 99% pure) was used as the surfactant.

Synthesis of MCM-41 with Microwave Heating

The synthesis of mesoporous MCM-41 was a modification of the procedure of Daviset al. (1988). First, 6.6 g of CTABr was slowly dissolved in 43mL of deionized waterat 40�C, and 5.65mL of sodium silicate solution was added dropwise to the clear sol-ution with continuous stirring for 1 h at the same temperature. The pH of the mix-ture was reduced to 11 by the addition of 1M H2SO4. The resulting gel was againstirred for 1 h before being transferred to a 120mL Teflon autoclave. The autoclavewas placed in a Delonghi EMD MW 311 adjustable power (<800W, 230V, 50Hz)microwave oven with a Velp Scientifica VTF Digital Thermoregulator. The aim ofthis study was synthesis of MCM-41 under low-power microwave irradiation. Theminimum adjustable power outputs for the utilized microwave oven were 80Wand 120W. For that reason, these two power outputs were employed for the syn-thesis. Gels under autogenous pressure absorbed microwave energy of 80W or120W to achieve desired reaction temperatures of 90�C or 120�C, respectively. Syn-thesis was carried out in a temperature-controlled mode. At 80W the temperature

was ramped with a heating rate of 20�C=min, and in approximately 2min the systemreached 90�C. For the synthesis at 120W the temperature was ramped with a heatingrate of 35�C=min, and again in about 2min the system reached 120�C. Two sets ofexperiments were conducted; in the first set, irradiation was under 80W of power for10, 20, 30, and 60min, and in the second one, irradiation was under 120W of powerfor 10, 20, 30, and 60min. The prepared samples were labeled as MCM41 X=Y,where X indicates the power of microwave irradiation in watts and Y representsthe duration of the experiment in minutes.

The resultant solid from each experiment was recovered by filtration, washedthoroughly with distilled water until the pH was neutral, dried at room temperature,and stored at 40�C for 24 h. The dried solid was finally calcined inside a quartz tube(120 cm long� 1 cm diameter) fitted with quartz filters to obtain MCM-41. The tubewas placed in a furnace and heated from ambient temperature to 550�C at a rate of10�C=min and kept at 550�C for 6 h in a flow of dry air.

Characterization

N2 Sorption AnalysisThe surface areas and porosities of the produced mesoporous MCM-41 s were deter-mined using a NOVA 2200e Surface Area and Pore Size Analyzer (QuantachromeInstruments Co., USA). Measurements were performed in boiling liquid nitrogen(77K). Samples were outgassed at 150�C overnight. BET surface areas weredetermined by the multipoint method using adsorption data in the relative pressure(P=P0) with a range of 0.05–0.3. The pore volume and pore size distributions wereestimated from the adsorption branch of the isotherms by the Barrett-Joyner-Halenda (BJH) method.

X-ray Diffraction (XRD)A Bruker AXS-D8 advanced powder diffractometer fitted with a Siemens X-ray gunand equipped with Bruker AXS DIFFRAC Plus software provided XRD data atroom temperature. Measurements were performed in the 2h range of 2�–7�, at40 kV and 40mA, using Cu-Ka 1.5406 A radiation. The step size was always 0.01�

and data collection was in 1-s steps. All samples were outgassed before XRDmeasurements.

Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM)A Leo G34-Supra 35VP field emission scanning electron microscope coupled toenergy dispersive spectrometer software was used for image and elemental analysis.Samples were first coated with carbon by an Emitech T950 Turbo Evaporator toprovide a conducting surface layer. The gun chamber pressure was �10�11mbar.The SEM electron column was equipped with a secondary electron detector, aback-scattering electron detector, and an in-lens detector for secondary electrondetection. Imaging was done at the extractor voltage of 5.2 keV and acceleratingvoltages ranging between 2 and 5 keV using the secondary electron detector.

Fourier Transform-Infrared (FT-IR) SpectroscopyA Nicolet iS10 Fourier transform-infrared spectrometer with the KBr pellet tech-nique was used in the range of 400–4000 cm�1 to determine structural informationof the MCM-41 materials produced.

Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA)Thermal stabilities of the samples were determined by a Netsch 449C thermogravi-metric analyzer. The samples were heated from room temperature to 1000�C at10�C=min under a nitrogen atmosphere in pure alumina crucibles.

Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM)High-resolution TEM analyses were performed by a JEOL 2100 LaB6 HRTEM.

Results and Discussions

Figures 1 and 2 presented the low-angle (2h value ranging from 2� to 7�) XRD pat-terns of the MCM-41 samples prepared at 80W and 120W for various reactiontimes. The characteristic Bragg peaks of the calcined MCM-41 s can be indexed asthe (100), (110), (200), (210), and (300) members of a hexagonal lattice (Beck et al.,1992). The diffractograms of the MCM-41 produced in the present work show threeBragg peaks that can be indexed as (100), (110), and (200). MCM-41 prepared at80W microwave power (90�C) for up to 20min gave a characteristic (100) Braggpeak at 2h¼ 2.70�. It appears that the reaction time was insufficient to initiate theformation of ordered structure. MCM-41 prepared at 120�C (120W of microwavepower) for 20min, however, gave three Bragg peaks at 2h¼ 2.50� (100), 2h¼ 4.20�

(110), and 2h¼ 4.80� (200). Thus, the relatively higher microwave power was effec-tive in synthesizing MCM-41 even with relatively short reaction times. When theduration of microwave heating was 30min, ordered structures formed and threeBragg peaks were detected at 2h¼ 2.48� (100), 2h¼ 4.20� (110), and 2h¼ 4.80�

(200) (90�C, 80W microwave power) and 2h¼ 2.50� (100), 2h¼ 4.26� (110), and2h¼ 4.82� (200) (120�C, 120W microwave power). Even greater intensities wereobserved at same 2h values for 60min of microwave heating.

Representative SEM images (using the secondary detectors) of MCM-41 sam-ples 120=30 (prepared at 120W microwave power in 30min), 80=30 (prepared at

80W microwave power in 30min), and 80=60 (prepared at 80W microwave power in60min) are shown in Figure 3. The morphology of agglomerated particles inMCM-41 sample 120=30 (Figure 3(a)) showed smaller particles of about 70 nm ascompared to MCM-41 samples 80=30 and 80=60 (Figures 3(b) and 3(c)). The reasonfor this observation can be attributed to the faster reaction rate and nucleation ofcrystallization of MCM-41 production in 120W power output. As shown inFigure 4, the TEM image of calcined MCM-41 sample 120=30 illustrates that thesample has highly ordered regular channels with a pore diameter of approximately3.9 nm.

Figures 5 and 6 illustrate the N2 sorption isotherms at 77K and the pore distri-butions of MCM-41 synthesized under various experimental conditions. Table Isummarizes the parameters derived from nitrogen sorption and XRD.

Figures 5(a) and 6(a) show the nitrogen isotherms of MCM-41 prepared at 90�C(80W microwave power) and 120�C (120W microwave power), respectively. All ofthe isotherms can be classified as type IV according to the IUPAC nomenclature.Thus, all the isotherms indicate a linear increase of adsorbed volume at low pressuresdue to monolayer adsorption on the pore walls, followed by a steep increase in nitro-gen uptake at a relative pressure of 0.25<P=P0 due to capillary condensation insidethe mesopores, highly characteristic of MCM-41 (Nalbant et al., 2008). The steepadsorption starting from P=P0< 0.25 and the narrow hysteresis loops that occurredat 0.40<P=P0< 0.65 are characteristic features of mesoporous materials having anarrow range of uniform and cylindrical pores (Beck et al., 2001; Selvam et al.,2001; Zhao et al., 1996). The long plateau at higher relative pressures indicates thatafter capillary condensation of the mesopores, multilayer adsorption continued onthe surface of the material.

Table I includes the specific surface area (BET), the pore volume and averagepore diameter (Dpore) evaluated from the desorption branch of the N2 isothermsby the BJH theory, the d100, lattice parameter (a), and the pore wall thickness (d)of the calcined MCM-41.

The characteristic lattice parameter a, defined as the repeating distance betweentwo pore centers, was evaluated from the following equation (Fenelonov et al., 1999):

BET surface area values of the MCM-41 prepared at 90�C (80W microwavepower) increased from 558 to 1211, 1385, and 1390m2=g at heating durations of10, 20, 30, and 60min respectively (Table I). Wu and Bein (1996) reported thatmicrowave treatment at 150�C for 60min with cethyltrimethyl ammonium bromideas surfactant resulted in the formation of mesoporous MCM-41 having specific sur-face areas of 800–1000m2=g. MCM-41 prepared at 100�–120�C within 40min withmicrowave irradiation in ethylene glycol solution using the same surfactantpossessed BET surface areas and pore volumes of 700–1150m2=g and 0.60–0.78 cm3=g,respectively (Kim et al., 1999). Mesoporous MCM-41 prepared at 90�C (80W)microwave irradiation for 60min possessed a specific surface area of 1390m2=gand a pore volume of 1.10 cm3=g, which is higher than any previously reportedvalues (Kim et al., 1999; Wu and Bein, 1996).

The BET surface area of MCM-41 synthesized at 120�C (120W microwavepower) and calcined at 550�C increased from 688 to 1438m2=g as the duration ofheating was increased from 10 to 30min. Pore volumes increased from 0.28 to0.58 cm3=g as the duration of heating was increased from 10 to 60min. Pore dia-meters of the products obtained at 120�C (120W microwave power) were 4.46,4.02, 4.00, and 4.02 nm for MCM-41 s prepared at 10, 20, 30, and 60min, respect-ively. These values are about 15% larger than those obtained at 90�C (80W micro-wave power). Pore diameters of MCM-41 prepared at 120�C (120W microwavepower) for 30min were close to those of MCM-41 prepared at 80W microwavepower for 60min. This suggests that, providing the same surfactant is used, oneobtains very similar pore diameters after ordered hexagonal mesoporous structuresform. This is consistent with the work of Jana et al. (2004), who prepared MCM-41using a mixture of surfactants with alkyl chain lengths ranging from C8 to C22. Theyobtained BJH pore diameters of 3.2 nm at 25�C using 80W microwave power witha C16 surfactant, which is quite close to the 3.49 nm value we obtained. When

compared with other MCM-41 s produced in this work and also the materialsreported in the literature, MCM-41 prepared at 120�C (120W microwave power)in 30min had the highest specific surface area value of 1438m2=g.

While wall thickness of the MCM-41 mesoporous materials produced at 90�C(80W microwave power) was in the range of 0.78–0.90 nm, the wall thickness ofthose produced at 120�C (120W microwave power) was in the range of 0.34–0.38 nm. It seems that the wall thickness of the materials depends highly on thepower of the microwave energy used during synthesis. As suggested in the literature(Carrott et al., 2007), increase in temperature causes an expansion of the micelles andas a consequence pore diameter increases. Also, since the reaction rates are very high

with microwave synthesis, condensation of the walls occurred very fast and thelattice parameters remained almost constant for both power outputs. From thisobservation, it can be concluded that the increase in microwave oven power outputfrom 80 to 120W resulted in a decrease in pore wall thickness values. So it can besuggested that synthesis of mesoporous MCM-41 materials at the relatively highertemperature of 120�C (120W power microwave) produced materials with thinnerwalls. The effect of microwave irradiation in the synthesis of MCM-41 materialsin the present work at a relatively low reaction temperature, 120�C, might be dueto a combination of thermal effects, arising from the heating rate, superheating or‘‘hot spots,’’ and the selective absorption of radiation by polar substances present

in the reaction mixture. According to the studies reported in the literature, advan-tages like higher yields, milder reaction conditions, and shorter reaction times donot occur by conventional heating (Hoz et al., 2005). This appears to be the firstcomprehensive and quantitative investigation of the comparatively rapid synthesisof mesoporous MCM-41 by low-power microwave (80 and 120W) heating in therelatively low temperature range of 90�C and 120�C.

Thermal stabilities of the calcined samples were characterized by thermogravi-metric methods. Thermogravimetric analysis of the 120=30 MCM-41 sample (120Wmicrowave power for 30min) from room temperature to 1000�C with a 10�C=minheating rate in air (Figure 7) revealed a weight loss of only 13.89% at 170.0�C. Atthe end of the analysis total weight loss was measured as 22.76%, which is in goodagreement with the literature (Araujo and Jaroniec, 2000; Koh et al., 1997). Accord-ing to Araujo and Jaroniec (2000) desorption of water occurs up to 170�C. After thattemperature up to 600�C decomposition of residual surfactants and condensation ofsilanol groups were observed. Finally, the last 1.50% weight loss from 600� to 1000�Cis attributed to condensation of residual silanol groups. The results indicated that themesoporous MCM-41 materials produced in the present work had good thermalstability.

Figure 8 shows the FT-IR spectra of uncalcined and calcined 120=30 MCM-41sample (120W microwave power for 30min). Uncalcined MCM-41 (Figure 8(a))gave bands at 2922, 2852, and 1478 cm�1, characteristic of surfactant alkyl chains.These bands were not present after calcination, showing calcinations to be effective(Holmes et al., 1998; Zholobenko et al., 1997). In Figure 8(b) the band at 3407 cm�1

is characteristic of the vibrations of Si–OH and adsorbed water molecules; the bandat 1632 cm�1 is another characteristic vibration of adsorbed water molecules. Theband at 1065 cm�1 is the asymmetric extension vibration of Si–O–Si.

The high specific surface areas and pore volumes and the uniformity of theordered pore diameters and pore wall thicknesses suggested that MCM-41 materialssynthesized with low-power microwave irradiation might have invaluable applica-tions as molecular sieves and in the production of catalysts. This will be consideredin a subsequent article.

Conclusion

This appears to be the first comprehensive and quantitative investigation of the com-paratively rapid synthesis of mesoporous MCM-41 materials with low-power micro-wave heating in the relatively low temperatures of 90� and 120�C. Highly crystallineordered mesoporous MCM-41 was produced reproducibly with uniform pore sizedistributions and good thermal stability. The effect of microwave irradiation inthe synthesis of MCM-41 at such a low reaction temperature might be due to a com-bination of thermal effects, arising from the heating rate, superheating, or ‘‘hotspots’’ and the selective absorption of radiation by polar substances present in thereaction mixture. Microwave-assisted heating caused spectacular accelerations inthe reactions as a consequence of the heating rate, which cannot be reproduced bythermal heating. Higher yields, milder reaction conditions, and shorter reactiontimes were thus attained. It was found in the experiments that using 120W of micro-wave irradiation increased the reaction temperature to only 120�C, and highlyordered mesoporous MCM-41 materials were produced in only 30min. The MCM-41 material obtained in this experiment had a specific surface area of 1438m2=g, apore volume of 0.53 cm3=g, and a rather uniform pore diameter of 4.00 nm; thesevalues compare favorably to those of MCM-41 s reported in the literature. It seemedthat the wall thickness of the materials depended highly on the power of the

microwave energy used during synthesis. Synthesis of the mesoporous MCM-41materials at 120�C using relatively higher microwave power of 120W appeared toproduce materials with thinner walls (0.34–0.38 nm).
