Synopsis The Greeks were fantastic storytellers and created many myths and legends to make sense of the world around them. In this musical show you’ll learn all about Persephone in the underworld and why we have the seasons, how Phaeton loses control of the sun chariot giving us deserts and ice caps, and why Prometheus was seen as the friend of the humans.

HOW CAN WE USE FIRE? Practice new vocabulary and speaking.

Tell them that as they may know, fire is very important in our everyday lives and discuss different ways we can use fire. Now, tell them to look at the pictures and match them with the correct word. Answers: 1-COOKING; 2-LIGHTING; 3-SIGNALING; 4-HEATING EXTRA: Remind students that even though fire is very useful, it is also very dangerous. Make a list of things that are important regarding fire safety, e.g. “Don’t play with lighters or matches; Don’t leave your toys near heaters…” Think of as many things as you can and write them on the board. When you’re finished, have the students answer the questions in complete sentences. Students from higher levels, can also write the animal’s name under each picture. ZEUS: KING OF GODS Practice reading, speaking and the colours. Have fun colouring!

WORKSHEET 11 Tell the students to look at the picture and ask them if they know who Zeus is. Explain he is the god of the sky and thunder, and considered the king of the gods. Have the students look at the number code and colour in Zeus with the corresponding colours. They can choose the colour of the sandals. When they’re finished you can ask them to say each item they coloured out loud: “I coloured the chair brown.” etc.

Prometheus

A

Prometheus is a very intelligent god. He makes humans out of clay and teaches them to use their hands and their minds.

Prometheus asks Zeus to give humans fire but he says NO!

He leaves feeling angry.

Zeus punishes Prometheus and chains him to a rock. A bird attacks him everyday until

Heracles decides to save him.

Prometheus was a very intelligent god. He was the son of Zeus, god of gods. One day Zeus asked him to make him a toy- something to play with

because he was bored. Prometheus made little creatures out of clay that

looked like the gods. He breathed life into them and taught them to make lots of things. They built houses, cities, ships and grew wheat to make

bread. But Zeus was afraid that these humans would become too powerful

and he told Prometheus not to give them fire. But Prometheus felt sorry for

the humans - they were so cold and couldn’t cook food, so he stole a spark of fire and gave it to them. This made the humans very happy but when

Zeus saw it, he was very angry and had Prometheus chained to a rock

where he had to stay without food and drink and sleep for many centuries, with a great bird attacking him every day. Heracles, also son of Zeus, finally

broke the chains and set Prometheus free.

PERSEPHONE

Persephone was the goddess of spring, daughter of Zeus and Demeter. Hades, god of the underworld, saw Persephone running in the field. He

thought she was beautiful and kidnapped her. Whoever ate a fruit from the

underworld was forced to stay there, so Hades made Persephone eat 6 seeds from a pomegranate. But since she only ate 6 seeds Hades only

made her stay there for 6 months. Demeter, goddess of grain and

agriculture, was so sad over the disappearance of her daughter that she

ignored her duties to the world, making the plants and crops wither and die - that’s why we have Fall and Winter. When her 6 months in the

underworld are over, Persephone joins Demeter during the next 6 months

where they’re both happy and plant life grows again - that’s why we have Spring and Summer. And this is how the changing of seasons occur.

Phaeton’s body fell into River Eridanos. His sisters the Heliades

we so sad they changed into poplar trees by the river.

Phaeton’s friends didn’t believe his father was the sun god Helios, so he went to ask him. His father granted him a wish to prove it.

Zeus was so angry he threw a lightning bolt at Phaeton.

Phaeton flew too high and froze part of the Earth – that’s how the

ice caps appeared. Then he flew too low and burned part of the Earth – that’s how the

deserts appeared.

One day at school Phaeton was boasting to his school friends that Helios the sun god was his father, but they didn’t believe him. He asked his

mother and she said he should go to India to ask Helios himself. So

Phaeton went to see his father to ask him, and to ask for one special wish. Helios confirmed he was his father, so the happy Phaeton asked for a

special wish: to drive the sun chariot through the sky for a whole day, from

east to west. Helios said that driving the chariot was very difficult and that

even Zeus wasn’t strong enough to do it. But a promise is a promise and Helios had to let him drive the chariot. Phaeton set off with the sun chariot

but was not able to control the horses. He flew up too high and froze part

of the Earth – that’s how the ice caps appeared. Then he flew too low, coming too close to Earth and burning it – that’s how the deserts appeared.

Zeus was so angry by the destruction that he threw a lightning bolt at

Phaeton and his body fell into River Eridanos. His sisters the Heliades,

gathered around the river where they were changed into poplar trees and stayed with their brother for ever.
