TOWER OF LONDON Learn about the history of the Tower of London. Practice reading, comprehension and writing.

WORKSHEET 3 Read the text out loud giving a few students a chance to read a sentence. Discuss with students if they’ve been to London and the Tower. On the next page, have students answer the True and False sentences individually. Tell them they must correct the false ones. Synopsis Who will win the Culture Vulture UK Treasure Hunt 2019? Join Jo, our culture vulture, as she hunts for clues all around England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales. There’s lots to see and do: Learn about the great inventors of the 19th century, discover the music and musicians that have put Britain on the map, enjoy a nice cup of tea and cake at a traditional Welsh tea room, hear about Ireland’s famous Blarney Stone, and visit the Tower of London and meet some of it’s famous visitors from the past. But, Big Bobbi also wants to win the treasure hunt and will do anything it takes to get what she wants… The race is on!

FLASHCARDS Learn vocabulary related to the UK and British Isles. NOTE: The flashcards SHAMROCKS and LEPRECHAUN are equally for NORTHEN IRELAND and IRELAND.

WORKSHEET 1 Use the flashcards to teach students vocabulary related to the play. Start by asking them about the first flag - UK. Ask them if they know what the United Kingdom is. Explain that it is made up of 4 countries: England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. Tell them that Ireland is not part of the UK, but part of the British Isles. See if they can guess which country the flags belong to. Review each flag and if necessary write its name on the board. Show students the flashcard with the map and have them point out the countries. Review each flashcard with landmarks and aspects of the culture of each country. GAME: When students are comfortable with the flashcards you can have a vocabulary race! Stick each flag one the wall and make two teams. Have them line up for the race: only two students racing at a time. Ask them “Where can we find the Parliament/Big Ben?” and lift up the corresponding flashcard. The first student to touch the correct flag wins one point. Continue until you’ve finished the cards. The team with the most points wins!

NAME THE COUNTRIES Get familiar with the UK map and practice spelling the countries.

WORKSHEET 2 Tell your students that they’re going to practice spelling the countries you practiced in the flashcards. If you think that students need further help, write each country’s name on the board in a jumbled order, and have them guess where to write it. If students were paying attention, they will know the answer to the question! Answers: 1-Northern Ireland, 2-Scotland, 3-Ireland, 4-Wales, 5-England Part of the UK: Northern Ireland, Scotland, Wales and England.

HARD ROCK CAFÉ: MEMORABILIA Discover Hard Rock Café’s origins. Learn about music vocabulary. NOTE: This activity is not connected to the Culture Vulture script but is a fun activity related to British culture.

WORKSHEET 4 Ask students if they know anything about the Hard Rock Café. Explain that it is a theme restaurant founded in 1971 by two North Americans. In 1979 the cafe began covering its walls with rock and roll memorabilia. There are about 181 cafes worldwide! Ask students if the know the meaning of “memorabilia”. Explain that it is an object, like a souvenir, that a person acquires for the memories associated with it. Students can begin unscrambling the words. If it’s too difficult, you can write the words correctly on the board in a jumbled order and have them guess where they go. Answers: 1-GUITAR, 2-MICROPHONE, 3-JACKET, 4-SAXOPHONE, 5-VINYL, 6-DRUMS

THE BEATLES: YELLOW SUBMARINE TRACK 1 Discover The Beatles. Practice listening and vocabulary.

WORKSHEET 5 Ask students if they’ve heard about The Beatles. Explain that they were a pop/rock band from the 1960’s, from the city of Liverpool in England. They were considered one of the most influential bands of their time. Ask them if they know what “influential” means. Explain that it’s when there’s a great influence, importance or significance on someone or something. Tell students they’re going to listen to one of The Beatles’ songs: Yellow Submarine. They must listen carefully and choose the correct underlined word. Play the song 2 or 3 times if necessary. When they’re finished, ask them about the song and what they think it’s about. Answers: 1-town, 2-life, 3-found, 4-waves, 5-friends, 6-begins, 7-ease, 8-blue

WORKSHEET 7 Probably all students have seen Harry Potter. Have them explain what the film is about (first film namely) and explain it to anyone who hasn’t seen it. If students can’t remember the words or find it difficult, write them on the board in a jumbled order and have them guess what object they belong to. After everyone has finished, correct the answers. SHAKESPEARE: COLOUR ME IN Let’s colour! A small introduction about Shakespeare. Practice reading and speaking. NOTE: This activity is not connected to the Culture Vulture script but is a fun activity related to British culture.

WORKSHEET 8 Ask students if they’ve ever heard of Shakespeare. Read the small introduction together. Tell them that he is the most famous playwright in the English language, and around 410 films have been made from his plays! Have them colour in the picture and guess what year Shakespeare was born. Answer: 1564 EXTRA: Tell students that if they want to do some research, they can write “Shakespeare’s Screen Adaptations” on Google to find more information.

TEA TIME: FANCY A CUPPA? Discover British traditions. Practice reading, creative writing and acting.

WORKSHEET 9 Ask students if they know what time afternoon tea is (around 4/5pm). Explain that afternoon tea became fashionable in the 19th century thanks to Anna, the Duchess of Bedford. It was supposed to fill a long gap between lunch and dinner, served as late as 8pm back then. Lifestyles have changed since then, and now it is simply a delicious treat. Tell students that two friends have met for the afternoon tea, Peggy and Janet. They are in a typical Welsh tea room and the waitress comes to take their order. Have students continue the dialogue in writing, using the menu on the right side of the page. Tell them to be creative, to use words to describe the food, such as: delicious, fantastic, sweet, salty, etc. When they’re finished, you can act out the dialogue as a little play, dressing up and using props if you wish!

WELSH LANGUAGE: FUN FACT Time for a laugh!

WORKSHEET 10 Ask students if they know any long words in English. After they’ve mentioned a few, tell them that in Welsh -official language in Wales- there is a 58-letter word naming a village. Read the text together, the translation, and try to read the word… You’ll surely have a laugh! EXTRA: Students can do further research on long words in Google.

RUGBY: WORDSEARCH Learn about rugby and where it’s popular. Practice rugby related vocabulary.

WORKSHEET 11 Ask students if they’ve ever played rugby. Read the text together as a group. Have a quick discussion about any other

aspects students may know about rugby, and then begin the wordsearch.

RUGBY: WHAT ARE THEY DOING? Learn about playing rugby. Practice the present continuous, speaking and writing.

WORKSHEET 12 Ask students: “What are you doing?” Possible answer: “We are learning.” Point to a student and ask: “What are you doing?” Possible answer: “I am learning.” Tell students that they’ll be using the present continuous. Write on the board: subject + verb to be + present participle of the main verb. Explain the the present participle is the verb+ing (Before adding ing, some verbs drop the “e” and some consonants are doubled. Write example 1 to explain. Tell students to remember that the verb to be can be singular (is) or plural (are). Have students guess what the players are doing, covering the box on the right. Then proceed with the worksheet. SCOTTISH INVENTIONS: WHO INVENTED WHAT? TRACK 2 Learn about Scottish inventors and inventions. Practice listening and speaking.

WORKSHEET 13 Ask students if they know any inventors. If yes, ask them what they’ve invented. Tell them that many great inventions were created by Scottish people. They will have to listen to the script and connect the inventor to their inventions. Play the script 2 or 3 times if necessary. Answers: 1-D, 2-C, 3-A, 4-E, 5-B DRAWING EXERCISE: Give students a white piece of paper and have them draw their own invention and explain it to the class in English! WORKSHEET 14 Ask students if they know any women inventors. Ask them why they think we don’t know about many women inventors. Explain that women didn’t have access to Science as men did, and weren’t permitted to do many things, including getting an education. Continue with the worksheet. Students must listen to the script attentively and connect the inventor to their inventions. Play the script 2 or 3 times if necessary. Answers: 1-B, 2-A, 3-C Script B: 1-Eleanor Coade invented an artificial stone used for many outdoor constructions, like statues. The Coade stone was a very resistant

material and one of the most used of the 18th century. 2-Henrietta Vanisittart is known as England’s first woman engineer. She

invented a new propeller design that allowed ships to move faster and smoother using less fuel.

3-Elizabeth Bell didn’t want children to work cleaning chimneys. She decided to invent the chimney sweeping machine and was the only

woman know to do this in her time.

IRISH FOLKLORE: LEPRECHAUNS Learn about Leprechauns. Practice reading and speaking.

WORKSHEET 15 Ask students if they know what a Leprechaun is. Read the text together as a group. Tell students they must write a text with their wishes. If they find it too difficult, have them draw their three wishes and then explain them to the class in English.

TOWER OF LONDONA Brief History

The Tower of London is a medieval castle in England. It is made from caen stone brought from France and constructed by

William the Conqueror in 1066.

It was used for many things in the past. It was a prison and prisoners entered through the Prisoners Gate. In the White

Tower, they had arms like cannons, guns and bows. From 1199 to 1216 there were all kinds of animals in the Tower, like lions, kangaroos, elephants, polar bears and ostriches. For about 500 years they made England’s coins here. The place where coins

are made is called a ‘Mint.’ Today we can see the Crown Jewels at the Tower of London, including Queen Elizabeth’s crown

with 2800 diamonds!
