TURNING WASTE INTO RESOURCES
The European process industry isone of the main pillars of Europe’seconomy. But as of today, thisindustry is energy and resourceintensive, with significant carbonemissions and a high dependence onresource availability. This not onlyputs a strain on our planet’sresources, but also contributes toclimate change. A systemic approach is needed toaddress this – not only byimplementing circular systems atfactory level, but at industry level.There is an increasing need to viewmanufacturing processes as part of alarger picture, taking intoconsideration waste treatment andmanagement, energy use andmaterials sourcing.
What is industrialsymbiosis?
The basis of industrial symbiosisis to move away from traditionaltake-make-dispose productionand consumption flows, buildingpartnerships between industriesto turn waste into new materialsand resources. Sharing resources betweenindustrial sites saves rawmaterial and energyconsumption, reducing pollutionand diverting waste fromlandfill. It creates new businessopportunities and jobs fromresidues and by-products, andcontributes to closing the loopfor industrial resources. Industrial symbiosis offers agreat opportunity for companiesto work together in finding cost-effective, sustainable solutionsto dispose of their waste. Thisnot only has a positive impact onindustry revenue, but leads theway to transitioning cities andregions towards moresustainable and eco-friendlyindustrial practices.
This repository provides a list of 100promising synergies that could beimplemented in the European processindustry, helping companies identifypotential waste exchange with otherfirms. This "Synergies Outlook" presents acondensed summary of the Horizon2020 SCALER project research andtesting, available for download at: scalerproject.eu/resources/report

Industrial scale: References exist concerning the wide usage of thetechnology/procedure at industrial level. Industrial pilot: References exist concerning technology/procedure usage at industrial level, although still at an experimental stage. Laboratory scale: References exist concerning technology/procedure usageat laboratory scale. Under development: There are no references concerning the technologyusage. Theoretical concepts have already been developed. Low technical requirements: The synergy is feasible and involves a lowtechnical complexity procedure, comprising of mechanical and physicaltreatment or only transport (normally associated to direct synergies). High technical requirements: The synergy is feasible, but with a highertechnical complexity procedure and/or number of intermediary processesrequired (normally associated to indirect synergies). Limited potential: The synergy is feasible, but the procedure associated tothe synergy presents relevant antecedents and constraints related totechnical data (waste composition, receiver quality standards, logistics andinfrastructure) - which limits its final accurate analysis. Further evaluation isadvised. Unavailable support data: The synergy is not feasible, as there are noantecedents or technologies that have been found and/or there is a lack ofsupport data to sustain a final positive technical decision. Needs furtherevaluation regarding technical feasibility for implementation.
