Analyzing qil . . . Your Total Cost of lightingLamps differ from many other products you buy inone important respect. That is, what you pay to operatethe lamp represents a far greater investment than thecost of the lamp itself. How much more?In general, it's estimated that the cosl of the lamprLrns someuhere ,in the neighborhood, of one-tenth of theTotul Cost oJ Li.ghting. The remainder of your TCLconsists of the cost of power to operate the lamp -lus the cost of labor for lamp handling and maintenance.Let's analyze these costs.Cost ol Power. This usually accounts for 70/e or moreof your TCL. It is a fixed cost. The cost of power tooperate a 40 watt fluorescent lamp and ballast forinstance, remains essentially the same - regardless ofthe lamp's light output. In other words, a less efficient lamp may consume justas much power to produce less light - as a moreefficient lamp uses to produce more l\ght.

As we've seen, your fixed power cost, running upwardsof 70lo - emerges as far and away the major cost ofyour TCL. That's why lamp performance is the clue toyour best lamp buy. Obviously the lamp which givesyou the most light . . . stays the brightest longest . . .

Gost of Maintenance. This may run as high as 20/o ofyour TCL. And this too can be regarded as a fixedcharge - since it's based on the hourly wage rate of themaintenance man, plus overhead. Point is, the sameamount of labor is required to replace or clean a singlelamp - regardless of lamp brand. The variable here lies in the number of single lampreplacements needed. For installations with less efficientlamps - single replacements will be greater, mainte-nance costlier. But where more efficient lamps givesuperior service and need fewer replacements -aintenance costs will be lower.Cost of lamps. This may be a variab]e - depending onpossible differentials in brand discounts or speciai pricecuts. But because your approximate 10/o lamp costis the smallesl item of your TCL - cost savings in thisarea are of slight importance in relation to your TotalCost of Lighting.

How Can You Get the llighest Return 0n Your Lighting lnvestment?requires the fewest single lamp replacements . . . willmake the mosL fficienl use of the power it consumes.By selecting the lamp brand which gives the greatestreturn for your Total Cost of Lighting - you can earna measurable profit on your lighting investment.

You Get Negligiblelamp DiscolorationThough lamp discoloration is not necessarily due tofaulty lamp operation - it materially affects appearanceand reduces light output. Ordinary fluorescent lampstend to discolor appreciably during their useful lifein service.Rigid control of quality of all component parts com-bined with stringent manufacturing standards, provideclean lamp appearance.By decreasing loss of light through lamp discoloration- Sylvania fluorescents increase the extra value youreceive for your Total Cost of Lighting. You Get Welded lamp Bases ...Preventing Faulty ContactsAnd Corrosion FailuresWelding lead wires to contact pins on the fluorescentlamp base results in several major benefits. The strongerjoint and smoother construction make pins easier toinsert in the socket - insure positive contact, moredependable starting, safer operation. Welding alsoeliminates the possibility of corrosion caused bysoldering in ordinary Iamps - which leads to earlierlamp failure.Sylvania fluorescents burn brighter far longer - andreduce your lamp replacement and maintenance expensebecause of their welded bases. Superior constructionfeatures like this are another reason why Sylvania lampsgive you that important extra measure of service andvalue that helps reduce your TCL.

You GetMore Uniform Light. . .Greater Brightness...With ExclusiveHomogenized PhosphorsThe superiority of Sylvania's phosphor coatingsare a primary reason for the superior lighting qualityof Sylvania fluorescents.Sylvania's phosphors must meet tests for purity thatare hi,gher than U.S. Pharmacopoeia Standards. Phos-phor particles must vary in size - but within strictlyheld maximum and minimum limits. And finally, theygo through an exclusive "homogenizing" process. Thisthoroughly blends the various particie sizes for evendistribution insuring best coating adhesion andmaximum uniformity and brightness. That's why Sylvania fluorescents don't show theirregularities in coating thickness found in ordinarylamps. And why Sylvania lamps give you more uniformli, ght and greater briglztness than are produced by anyother coating process used in the industry. Anotherreason why Sylvania fluorescents increase seeing andworking efficiency . . . lead to increased production andextra value for your TCL.You Get ReliableFast-Starting Due To lnvisibleSilicone CoatingAs you may know, humidity can have a decidedly un-favorable effect on the operation of ordinary fluorescentlamps . . . which generally appears as an annoying slow-down in lamp starting. Not so in the case of Sylvania fluorescents. Sylvaniaapplies a water-proof siiicone coating a moisturerepellant shield which covers the entire lamp. Thisinsures fast-starting under high humidity conditionsthroughout lamp life. Sylvania applies this coating toits entire line of major lamps. This is another feature which contributes to Sylvania'ssuperior lamp performance and helps reduce your TCL- by giving you more lighting value for your money.
