Syllabus for First Term
Session 2019-20
Grade 5
English :
• Speaking and Listening skills: Students learn how to speak for a variety of purposes, such as to explain, describe, narrate and analyse. They will use a range of vocabulary and practise speaking fluently and clearly.
• Use speaking and listening as a method of preparing for written assignments, exploring a wide range of subject matter with precision and effect.
Following will be emphasized: ∙ Extempore speech , role play, and debate.
Reading Skills: Select from a range of strategies and use the most appropriate ways to locate, retrieve and compare information and ideas from a variety of texts.
Develop interpretations of texts, supporting points with detailed textual evidence.
The marks obtained from Listening , Speaking ,Reading and writing assessment will be added with internal
assessment.
Internal assessment will be based on class work, homework and projects and will add up to 10%. The
Examination will be out of 40 marks which will include a Reading
Comprehension Passage (unseen) with questions,(Language usage, questions).
Writing Skills: Develop broad writing skills
Select and develop content and use register and language appropriate to genre, purpose and
audience
Structure and organise ideas coherently using sections or paragraphs
Use a range of sentence structures and punctuation accurately to convey meaning and create
particular effects
Use accurate spelling
Following will be emphasized: Narrative writing, Descriptive writing, Informal letter and Autobiography.
Editing: Sentences with linguistic errors: Students will beexpected to identify the mistakes in the given
sentences and rewrite the sentences after correcting them.
Following will be emphasized: Nouns, Verbs , adjectives and tenses.
Punctuation: To be able to punctuate unpunctuated lines by putting appropriate punctuation marks:
capitalization, full stop, comma, question mark, exclamatory mark, apostrophe, inverted comma.
Vocabulary: Students will be expected to solve word power questions such as Homophones, Synonyms,
Antonyms and Homonyms.
Figurative Language: Simile, metaphor.
Spellings: Students will be expected to write the correct spellings of the frequently used words.
Idioms: Students will be asked to use the given idioms to frame meaningful sentences.
Literature:
Questions will be set on: analyzing the characters, analyzing the plot, the theme,registering personal
interpretation of the characters, the plot, the theme explaining in reference to the context.
