Spanish 301 – Advanced Spanish Conversation – Fall 2016 MWF – 1300-1350 hours, Capers 201 Instructor: Dr. Zane U. Segle Office: Richardson 202 Office Hours: TR: 1400-1600 Contact: 953-7083, [email protected] Course Description and Goals: This course was built to provide the student with real-life, socio-cultural, as well as a language context within which to advance conversational competency in the target language. Throughout the semester, you will be exposed to language skills that include reading, writing, and speaking contexts that will increase your ability to communicate more fluidly. We will be addressing a myriad of issues in Spanish, dealing with such topics as identity, memory, immigration, class struggle, politics, social problems, and globalization in the Spanish world. This course hopes to engage the student through a combination of texts, images, and language in order to stimulate the student’s senses and cognitive faculties. Students will use the language in a meaningful way in order to discuss the various cultural aspects illustrated in our textbook. While developing proficiency in listening, speaking, reading, and writing, my hope is to expand your knowledge of the world around you as well as develop a sense of self-awareness as you strive to become more linguistically competent. As a crucial step toward fluency, this course will challenge your conversational comfort level in Spanish and increase your confidence negotiating the Spanish language. Expectations: § Participation –20% Suffice it to say that this course will rely heavily on student participation. This is a conversation course and therefore it is imperative that you make every attempt possible to speak during class. As such, each student will be given a daily participation grade reflecting their efforts during class. § Attendance If you are not in class, you cannot participate. You will be allowed three absences (excused or unexcused) and participation points will be lost for each successive missed class. For further class absences, official Citadel policy will be followed: "For any student, absences, whether authorized or unauthorized, in excess of 20% of the meetings of a particular course can, at the discretion of the professor, result in a grade of F in that course" (Bulletin of the Citadel). § Content Quizzes/Vocabulary Quizzes – 30% Quizzes will be given to determine you understanding of the course content as well as class discussion. There will also be vocabulary quizzes as this is a key component to learning the language. Required Text: Revista: conversación sin barreras (2014) Suggested Texts and Resources: Diccionario bilingüe: spanishdict.com; wordreference.com 501 Spanish Verbs (Barron’s 2006)
