Welcome to the Sydney Law Day Out.
This excursion guide assists teachers in planning and running excursions to NSW parliament and the courts in the Sydney CBD. It contains suggested itineraries, tips on court etiquette, and a map highlighting places of legal significance and places to eat. A separate guide is provided to students with in depth information on the buildings visited.
The aim of the program is to assist you in immersing your students in the legal environment and to help them better understand the day to day operation of the courts and government.

Downing Centre
8:30-8:45
Arrival and Security Check - Entry to the court is on Liverpool St. Doors open at 8.30. Between 8.30 and 9.30 there is usually a long queue to get through security.
9:00-9:55
Meet with Judge or Barrister
10:00-10:20*
Level 3 - Court 3.1 District Court’s “short matters” court. Quick turnover and a variety of criminal matters.
10:30-11:00*
Level 3 - Court 3.2 A large Court designed for multiple defendants and long jury trials.
11:00-11:30*
Level 4 - A number of courts dealing with Local Court matters. Check the Court List to see that days hearings.
Central Local Court
11:40-12:15
This Court holds committal hearings for criminal matters. Courts 1,2, and 4 have limited seating and it is suggested that students go in groups of 5. The building is very live acoustically, large groups should take care not to make noise in the foyer area since it can be heard in the courts.
Old Central Police Station
12:15-12:25
Behind the Central Local Court. The Gatehouse is still used when transporting prisoners for hearings.
Lunch
12:35-13:35
Hyde Park is a pleasant venue for lunch. Food courts have also been highlighted on the map.
NSW Parliament House
13:45-15:30
A booking needs to be made. On non-sitting days tours will include visits to both Houses of Parliament and a role-play conducted in the Legislative Assembly. Allow for 2 hours. The actual tour time is 90 minutes with role play included, but additional organisational time must be allowed for transport delays, movement, security processes, bags, and comfort stops.
*It is advised that larger groups of more than 20 students split into three different groups and alternate through the different courts. This means that one group would start at Court 3.1, another group at 3.2, and the other in the Local Court (level 4).
Itinerary 2
Queen’s Square
8:30-8:45
Arrival and Security Check.
9:00-9:45
Supreme Court Tour, a booking needs to be made. The NSW Supreme Court and Courts of Appeal and Criminal appeal are the highest courts in NSW. Queen’s Square is the main centre for civil matters, and also holds the Sydney sittings of the Federal and High Court.
King St Courts
10:00-11:00
Check Court List for cases of the day. The King Street Courts contain three court rooms. The Court rooms are not large so bigger groups need to separate. Visitors should sit on the right side of the public gallery as the court reserves the left side for family members and supporters of those appearing before the court.
RoLIA or Land and Environment Court
11:00-13:00
Rule of Law Presentation and presentation by a barrister - or -

Land and Environment Court. A tour is available for groups under 20 students, a booking needs to be made. The Court deals with a range of issues surrounding the use of public and private lands, as well as many cases to do with the regulation and protection of the natural environment.
Lunch

Options include Hyde Park or areas highlighted on map.
Justice and Police Museum
14:00-15:30
There is a cost to this program and a booking needs to be made. Within the setting of a real police station and courthouse selected museum collection items are used to explain how the laws that govern society are developed, implemented and enforced. Students look at how laws have evolved to reflect changing societal values and consider what it would have been like awaiting trial in the holding cells. Students participate in a mock trial during which they assume the roles of various court officials and work through the processes and etiquette of a Local Court hearing. Where possible a prosecutor from the NSW Police Prosecutors Command will attend the trial to act as the magistrate.
Court Etiquette
- Plan ahead which courts you want to see. - If in a large group, be prepared to split up into smaller groups, set a location where you can meet up if you get lost.- The courts are security controlled buildings which means that you need to pass through a metal detector before entering. Sharp objects (scissors, nail clippers) or knives are not allowed. - Photography of any kind is not allowed anywhere inside the court buildings, and mobile phones must be off or on silent. - Courts are generally busy places, be courteous and avoid standing in front of doors, or if in a large group crowding into a court room all at once. Magistrates and Judges will send people out if the court room becomes too crowded, and they do not take kindly to people making noise in the court. - Always make sure you bow to the judge when entering and exiting the courtroom.
