Campbelllown in posting their seventh successive victory were genuinely pressed millj[ame by Westem Suburbs but the Blues sti.ll ran in by 49pts. Sydney University inflkted the third consecutive loss on Holroyd-Pa"amatta who have slumped to sixth spot, while St George had a predictable success over the ever-trying Balmain anJJ North Short climbed to third place from Baulkham HUis who matched it with the Bears in a strong anJJ promising seconJJ half.

REVIEWING ROUND 8 - (cont.) Balmain's MARK SIMPSON, NICK ARCHER and COLIN CROOKS wen not aaough for the Tigers to stave off their 8th loss of 1994 at the hands of St George who continue with their strong performances.

MICHAEL CLIFT as usual was chief goalkicker for 1he Sainzs wi1h ano1her bag of nine.

Recalling m9,lly of their recent strong contests, Sunday's etrort at Sydney University showed both the Goannas and Uni will be amongst the major contenders for this year's ftnals.

Wilh a margin of only five poinu, ii was a wilUng duel wilh SALUM KASSEM and MA 1T TRIITON conspicuous for lhe visflors and GRAHAM HART 1he from-runner for Uni.

At Football Park, Campbelltown save for a mid-game lapse proved too strong for the Western Suburbs Magpies to the tune of 49pts.

PETER BROOKES (C) with 8 goals was a force but again it was the Blues overall teamwork the obstacle Ron Thomas' charges couldn't overcome though NATHAN LENTON.~ MATrHEW SHAW and TIM SANSON were always under the eye.

RECORD SCORE TO THE WHALES ·University of New South Wales mammoth score of 81.49-535 against Blacktown last weekend is the highest score on record for a First Grade match anywhere in Australia.

The match took 155 minutes to complete with the 55 minutes of extra time being added as a result of the flood of scoring shots by University. Despite the fine and sunny conditions the boys at the Village Green were reaching for the lights switch towards the end of the game.

A number of Uni players had possession statistics which read like cricket scores and there was none better than IAN KOHLER who handled the ball 70 times during the game.

Not far behind was STEVE BYRNS with 55 possessions but unfortunOJely for Steve and the Associadon, a broken bone in the hand will sideline him for six weeks causing him to miss this weekend's representative mOJch against the Monoro Football League. Sieve had been appointed as vice-captain of the SFA side and will now have to be content to be acting as Runner.

The loss of the Genera/for much of the game didn 't help the Rams either however there were some encouraging aspects to their game including the dazzling performance by DAVE ARMSTR.ONG and the good form of MICK WALKER who is starting to hit his straps after returning from injury a couple of weeks ago.

Competition leaders ManlyWarringah continued their relentless march toward the finals with a systematic 132-point crushing of Hawkesbury. The Wolves are performing like a well-oiled machine with all of its parts running smoothly.

UMPIRES VIEW

In November 1993, the AFL Commission in consultation with the VSFL, approved the establishment of two Umpiring Academies in Melbourne, one located at Waverley Park, the other in Reservoir.

The Commission and the VSFL, should be applauded for this initiative as it is an investment in the future, not only from the viewpoint of providing an excellent grounding for young umpires with the potential to advance to the AFL in the long term, but also providing the means by which umpiring standards can be improved in the short term.

In addition, some of the courses which will be implemented at the Academy will be constructed in such a way that umpires from many locations will be able to benefit. Whilst it may not be immediate there are hopes offers will e.xtend beyond Melbourne in 1995.

The Academies .aim to provide the facilities and the means by which coaching, training and education in the important a5pects of umpiring is implemented.

The focus will be on the following broad aspects:

• Coaching-education in the interpretation and application of the Laws. • Interpersonal skills development. • Coaching-education in umpiring skills and techniques. • Training, physical preparation. • Talent identification.

Victorian State Director of Umpiring Kevin Mitchell is the man charged with the responsibility of establishing the Academies and getting them up and running. He has appointed two fom1er

8

AFL Umpires Shane Harris (Waverley) and Brendan Carland (Reservoir) to the part time positions of Academy Director. Both Academies are equipped with the latest audio visual facilities and equipment and specialist part time staff have been appointed.

The response to the Acadermes in Melbourne has exceeded the most optirmstic expectations with the first 100 enrolled and (unfortunately) many others unable to gain entry.

The Academies service 20 Melbourne metropolitan and close country umpiring groups. These groups nominate second year umpires who have demonstrated in their first year that they possess the attributes necessary for a successful career in umpiring. The normnees are assessed and the successful ones are taken into the Academy.

There they receive expert coachingtraining-education from Academy staff and from a team of specialist consultants. They attend sessions during the week and then officiate at matches in their local competitions. They are observed .in these matches by Academy Staff.

The Academy course, which. is sequential and developmental, will run for three years, and upon successful completion the umpir~ will graduate and hopefully win positions on the VSFL State League squad which is the doorway to a place on the AFL panel. Those graduates who don't make it to their local groups where they will be regularly monitored and therefore still have the chance to make the VSFL at a later date.

It is anticipated that as a result of the expert coaching Academy umpires will receive, they will be able to have a significant impact on the improving levels whilst being groomed for a possible future career with the A.F.L.

The Sydney Footb;!ll League are always looking for new additions to umpiring ranks. Write, fax, or phone the SFL for more information.

TURNING BACK THE CLOCK

Do you somctlmea reach a !llage when you say -"It's about time I deaned out that cupboard". I started to do that a fortnight ago and came across

Back. in 198/J a very keen Of'gattiser for Ille Macquarie University i.w IAN WRIGHT wllo lllmed over to me some wonderful infonnallon on the pan fOOlball played 01 the stan of lhis cett111ry.

Ian handed me many lit!lc known details of lhc first seasons after the NSW A11511'alian Football Association WU re-formed in 1903.

Footy firSI came 10 notice in 186' !Wien a travelling Carlton side played motclles againSI Sydney University under bodt Union and the 'Vicroriali ' rules as they _,.e calkd in those days, hence the long and proud hiSlory the Uni club sllares with Aussie /Mes in NSW.

Supe1ules from Wttrre11 fi11gtr

Fol/owing hot on the heels al the Sydney Supen1/ea "Mag/ca/ Mystery Tour" to the ACT, was a trip to Nowra on Saturday, June 4th. Team co-ordlnaton Steve Miiis and myself sat down and put every pta-yer Into position, as he walked thru the gat9. When all posltlona wwe taken It was full ~team ahead.

Laurie Lyttleton playing his 1600th game of football was devastating from the moment he walked on the ground. He'll need a new set of White Diamonds for Albury.

The game was hotly contested and because a number of the South Coast boys are still playing competitive football they found It hard to temper their aggression at times. But we're tough boys In Sydney, old and tough. Let me tell you, there Is nothing more scary than having to kick over his mark when Coatsle Is standing there screaming his lungs out. He definitely had It over the hooter.

Aa the Sydney boys toolc their half-time breal< (as usual on th• ground), Nowra retired to the drualng rooms; Is there no rNpect for SupetUles etiquette?

The third quarter commenced but OWen didn't take the fteld with everyone else. Could It be he doesn't like playing at CHB too? Two minutes Into the quarter he surfaces from the toilet; the Ind Ian restaurant from Friday night was taking Its toll. TC (total) was dashing as always . at fUll back and must be getting close to backman life membership.

At the end of the 4th quarter, Sydney were In front and quite legltlmately

headed toward their dressing rom. But

16

Nowra said 'we're going to win this game even It takes us all night' - so another

quarter was scheduled.

The Sydney players were tired; they'd given their all to snatch a win In the allotted time. The team coordinators had to think of something quick, so they uncovered a loophole In the Superules Handbook. Rule XXIV; part 1, quite clearly states, 'If a side has won the game at the end of four quarters and another quarter Is called for, after exercising Rule XXI; part 3, then that side that Is In the fleld may fleld 19 players for that quarter'. Tony Kane obviously Is not up with all s~~les.

Also, Rule XClll; pett 17 states 'When a head count Is requested by the home aide during • fifth quarter. the side with the extra pla'f9r Is required to remove thet pla-yer but, )OU can Immediately 1Wplace him' - so long as no-one rN//setJ It. So that's what happened. Coats/e w.nt alt on. flank and II/cl< Camm/letrle came on the other. No p#'Obl«n.

The lighting was not of a high standard but there were rumors floating Mound that there were 200 spectators In the stands (no one will ever know).

When the Sydney boys finally made It to the showers, Trevor MltcMll aid "It's my shout for the soep fellars". The soap wu remarl<able, It /oolcs white and when )OU

wash with It, It turns ever whiter- WOWI

OUr next game Is this weekend In Albury - we'll tell you about It, soon.
