CONFERENCE INFORMATION & GUIDELINES

Target Audience— Students in grades K-8

Registration REGISTRATION ON-LINE ONLY

Optional: credit card payment, at the end of registration, go through PayPal: send to [email protected] (MUST USE this email or it will NOT go through), enter dollar amount, enter “Young Artists” in comments area

Or mail payment indicating who and what it is for

All students must have or be assigned to an attending chaperone: a teacher, parent, grandparent, etc.

All adults are required to pay the registration fee

There is no student/adult ratio

School Participants Identify one contact person (prefer an adult attending)

Prefer one check from schools or billing request unless paying on-line (enter “bill” in check column)

Make sure parents know the guidelines and cancellation policy

Direct parents to the website to access to the brochure “Information & Guidelines” page & topic pages

School district funding may be available to support teacher and student participation in SWWC enrichment programs through MINNESOTA GIFTED AND TALENT-ED REVENUE MN Statute § 126C.10 2(b).

Parent Participants Check with your school; see if they are handling regis-

trations and providing transportation, etc.

If you miss your school registration deadline, you can still register on your own.

Payment must be made by October 12.

Classes (Important Information)

Conference features a keynote and three hands-on sessions

Please make sure students are choosing sessions for their grade level (for scheduling purposes, choose 6 topics)

Choices selected by students DOES NOT represent their final schedule.

The final schedule is based on session demand and class sizes; therefore, we cannot guarantee that stu-dents will be assigned to all topics requested

We retain the right to limit the number of students per district in a specific class

Classes may be cancelled due to low interest

Students are allowed to attend a total of one Wheel Thrown pottery class and two clay classes during their time in grades K-8

Confirmation of Class Choices Final Schedule will still be mailed to the contact person

a few days before the event

Additional information and links will be emailed to the contact person prior to the conference.

Please make sure all information is shared with ALL chaperones

All chaperones are responsible for knowing the confer-ence guidelines

Cancellation and Refund Policy Cancellation requests must be received by final registra-

tion deadline for a refund less a $10/student service charge

After the final deadline, no refunds will be processed (Thanks for understanding!)

If a participant is unable to attend, send someone in their place (same classes) and notify us of the change

If you registered but do not attend, you are still responsi-ble for payment

Rona is an enrolled Cherokee, she has been doing beadwork and carving stone for more than 30 years. She creates one of a kind pieces of art as well as dancing and singing. Her art is an important connection to her heritage. Her husband Bud and daughter Camas are enrolled Ojibewa from Bad River. Bud is a storyteller and elder. Camas draws, paints, sings and dances. She will be doing the hoop dance for you.

We will be sharing a little of our tribal culture with you through the music, dance and story telling. Art is an im-portant part of every culture and a fun way to get to know one another.

saurs, or any other animal by folding colorful squares of paper. Everyone will take home their own origami creation, an origami creation made by the Professor, and the knowledge on how to make them. *Bill Cosgrove

J. Autumn Floral Design Gr. 3-5, 6-8 In this class we will be arranging fall flowers in a seasonal con-tainer. Students will learn design techniques, color schemes, and shape. Students will be given instructions and tips on ar-ranging flowers. Each student will take home their own creative flower arrangement! *Carly Dahl

K. Soft Pastels Made Easy Gr. 3-5, 6-8

Students will be introduced to the art of hand tinting black & white photographs using soft pastel chalk. Each student will receive a B&W photo and by using soft pastels they will add their own flair and bring the photo to life. *Terri DeGezelle

L. Illustration 101 Gr. K-2, 3-5, 6-8 Curious about a career in illustrating? Students will learn some of the basic skills used in illustrating a picture book. We will focus on character design, setting, and emotion to create a simple three-page picture book of your very own. *Cori Doerrfeld

M. Marble Mania Gr. 3-5, 6-8 Take a break from electronics and try your hand at a game of marbles! Better yet; make your own set of colored clay marbles to take home and learn how to play the marble games that pioneers learned as young 'uns! A great rainy-day or any-day game of skill, chance and fun! (Note-this project can be messy; wear/bring clothes that can get dirty.) *Alisha Flemming (PEBC)

N. Ready, set...Van Gogh! Gr. K-2, 3-5

Students will create a still life portrait of a fruit bowl with fruit using markers. They will learn about Vincent Van Gogh and utilize his techniques in their composition. *Ed Fornberg

O. Minion Painting Party Gr. K-2, 3-5, 6-8 Come have fun painting a minion on canvas. We will explore colors, shading and highlighting. You can select your own cre-ative environmental elements/designs/patterns to be in the background. *Tammy Grubbs

P. Crazy Art Gr. 3-5, 6-8 What do vegetables, soap and straws have in common? They’re all used to create fabulous art! You’ll learn the art of making your own veggie inks and explore decorative tech-niques through stamping and bubble art! You’ll have more than one art master piece to take home and put on display! *Brianne Hanson (PEBC)

A. Wheel Thrown Pottery Gr. 3-5, 6-8 Students will work on the pottery wheels and do hand-building

in SMSU’s Art/Pottery Lab. One item will be bisque fired and glazed and sent to students later (in February).

B. Clay Sculpture Gr. K-2, 3-5, 6-8 Students will create a sculpture from an existing idea, their

imagination or ideas generated during class. Clay will be taken home to dry, harden and paint.

C. Hand Building Pottery Gr. K-2, 3-5, 6-8 Students will create pottery forms with non-firing clay using

pinch and coil methods. The projects will be taken home to dry, harden and paint.

D. Clay Caricatures Gr. K-2, 3-5, 6-8 Work with Sculpey Modeling clay to create creatures, figures and other sculptures from your imagination. The items can be baked and painted at home. *Clay session are done by SMSU faculty & students

E. Bucket Drum Explosion of Fun Gr. 3-5, 6-8 Students will explore the powerful sounds of bucket drumming. There are millions of buckets, garbage cans and other bang-able things in the world that need our creative attention. They will learn cool rhythms, simple drumming techniques. The transformative power of community music making. You never know what you can do until you try. *Marc Anderson

F. Watercolor Journal Gr. K-2,3-5, 6-8 Students will learn a drawing technique using basic water color sets. They will experiment with color mixing and most im-portantly, work with the paint brush and its story telling power. All tools are basic; therefore, students will be able to continue exploring anytime, anywhere and everyday. *Kim Bovee

G. A Moon-lit Landscape Gr. K-2, 3-5, 6-8 Students will learn how to paint a night sky landscape with silhouettes of trees. We will discuss how art can be meaning-ful, then they will personalize their artwork. They will use dif-ferent painting techniques such as blending, spattering, and drawing. (Optional: bring an old shirt or smock to protect clothing) *Jennifer Buchholz

H. Cartoons In Motion Gr. K-2, 3-5, 6-8 Quick on the draw, you will learn easy tricks to create move-ment cartoon characters. Bring your imagination and create a cartoon character you can put in motion. *Willis Chase

I. Professor Origami Gr. 3-5, 6-8 Professor Origami does aw(e)ful things with paper. He will show you how to make Flapping Birds, Pern Dragons, Dino-

Z. Weaving Friendship Bracelets Gr. 3-5, 6-8 You will learn to weave on a small loom that you will take with

you to use many times. Friendship bracelets are quick and easy to make and fun to share! *Victoria McKinney

AA. Beauty in the Tree Gr. K-2, 3-5, 6-8 Students will learn how to draw using ink and a brush. Tech-

niques such as strokes to create a variety of different textures will be used to bring your tree to life. *Jill Miller

BB. Zombies 101 Gr. 3-5, 6-8 Special FX theatrical makeup techniques for the undead, just in time for Halloween! You don't want to be caught being a less-than-prepared zombie! Learn how to sport a look that will make even the pickiest of the undead proud! Not advised for the squeamish or those with overly tasty brains. (Note: aller-gy/sensitive skin: liquid latex is used) *Emily Pieper

CC. Super Powered Character Creation Gr. K-2, 3-5, 6-8 Do you love super powered comic book characters? Learn super powers to makes characters interesting and create your own. Handouts will cover drawing tutorials on super powered costume creation ideas, a variety of different art styles, action poses and other helpful hints. Start creating your own dynam-ic super powered character. *Scott Rolfs

DD. Sand Painting Gr. K-2, 3-5 The Navajo Natives still paint with sand which develops into an art piece as well as a way to keep evil spirits at bay. Join me for some fun with sand, glue and sandpaper! We will make colorful designs in the spirit of the Navajo Indians. *Melanie Schmidt

EE. Hand Lettering 101 Gr. 6-8 Get creative with this hands on class into lettering. Students will design a hand-lettered quote and take home a step-by-step guide to practice and perfect their skills for years to come. *Kady Simpson

FF. Make a Tubellow Gr. 3-5 What is a Tubellow? A crazy, bonkers, noisy, strange, and LOUD musical instrument you create. Those are the sounds you will be making after you create your own Tubellow. *Nancy Van Beek

GG. Shaving Cream Art Gr. K-2, 3-5

Explore sensory art with shaving cream and food coloring to create marbleized artworks. Discover different ways to make patterns. Each artwork turns out unique! (Note-this project can be messy; wear/bring clothes that can get dirty.) *Bonnie Van Moorlehm

Q. Whats COBAN? Gr. 6-8 It's bright, it stretches, it sticks to it self, and 3M of Brookings, SD had donated it for us to create all kinds of whimsical things. Sign up and get ready to be creative. *Scott Hanson

R. Drawing Fun Animal Characters Gr. K-2, 3-5, 6-8 Gary will take you through a step by step process on how to create animal cartoon characters loaded with personality. This fun and fast paced session is hands-on, so bring your imagina-tion. Every student will create characters with interesting per-sonalities. "Where the pencil meets the paper is where your imagination comes to life." *Gary Harbo

S. Drawing Patterns from Leaves & Letters Gr. 3-5, 6-8 This session explores using an existing shape, like a leaf or a letter, and building intricate patterns from it. You will be doing free-hand drawing with pencil as well as black drawing pens. Skills such as texture and shading with pencil and pen will be introduced. T. Native Dance Party Gr. K-2, 3-5, 6-8 Students will get a chance to see how the hoop dance is done and will get to participate in making various simple designs using the hoops. Through storytelling students will get a chance to learn a little more about the Native American Indian culture while sitting in a real tipi with authentic furs and arti-facts. *Bud & Rona Johnston

U. Let’s Be Characters Gr. 3-5, 6-8 Have fun with various theatre activities as we create characters and scenes that will prepare you for playing a role on stage. Bring your energy and your creative imagination. *Marie Kreft

V. Abstract Art Game Gr. K-2, 3-5, 6-8 Let’s play an abstract art game! Take turns picking challenges from a magic art box. You never know what you will get. Then race the timer to complete the challenge! End up with a mas-terpiece! *Cassandra Labairon

W. How to Draw Realistic Portraits Gr. 6-8 Want to learn how to draw your favorite celebrity? We will touch on the basics of drawing while working with proportions, shading and helpful hints to bring your art to life. All you need is basic school supplies and a willingness to learn. *Becky Lothert

X. Wire Sculpture Gr. 3-5, 6-8 The Artist will demonstrate wire sculpting techniques while creating a beautiful seahorse. After practicing with pipe clean-ers and drawing a few thumbnail sketches, students will have a choice. An owl? A fish? or maybe a tree? What will your won-derful wire sculpture be? *Mercedes Maltese (WA. Pavilion)

Y. Watercolor Techniques Gr. K-2, 3-5, 6-8 Students will explore a Wet on Wet watercolor technique while learning some basics about color mixing and the tools and techniques used to produce beautiful watercolor artwork. *Joel McKinney
