Dave Harris is visiting the UK from South Africa and will beat the Huntsman on Tuesday 26th June. Now the date of the Autosolohas been fixed for Saturday 23rd June he is also hoping to have a goat this.

The Cirencester Car Club is 60 years old this year and tocelebrate they held a classic run and a lunch at the CirencesterAgricultural College on 20th May. Bill Moffatt is a member of theclub and invited me to go along as navigator on the 40 mile road runin his MG Midget, the car we used on Le Jog. We didn’t have an entry list for the run but it seemed like therewere about 30 cars on it. Some were very nice, including one Ferrari,a 3½ litre Bentley, a Morgan 4/4, an MGB, a Lotus Elite and of coursethe usual Escorts and Cooper “S”s. The route did a clockwise looparound Cirencester visiting a lot of very picturesque Cotswoldvillages, to finish back at the College in time for lunch. Several speeches followed to round off a very pleasant day. They had a lot of historical memorabilia on show relating to the club, and I soon realised that I had done some of their events in the past. There were some very well known motorsport personalities in theaudience including Colin Francis OBE who I was sat next to (namedropping again). In June they are staging a re-run of the very first rally theyever ran in 1953 from Cirencester to Aberystwyth and back.Originally it was run over 24 hours but this time it is spread over 2days. Bill and I are entered, should be quite nostalgic, using a lot ofclassic Welsh roads.

Dave Harris Visit

Alastair’s Autotest takes place on Sunday 15th July. As inprevious years it will be on a grass surface. Cars with mud and snow tyresor four wheel drive will be allowed to enter but will be penalised 10%.Entries will be accepted on the day but it would be helpful if you couldphone Dood Pearce if you wish to enter so that the correct amount ofpaperwork can be printed. Tel 01531 821398. The venue is at Oridge Street, Staunton, Glos Map Ref162/783275, just off the bottom of map 150. Competitors will beallowed two runs at each test with only the best time to count. Reversingwill be kept to a minimum (unless you go wrong of course!). The eventwill start at 11-00 am with a short break for lunch at about 1-00 pm. Theentry fee is £10, unless it is your first ever autotest, in which case it willonly be £5. The club car will be available but you will need to book itand make a contribution towards the petrol. Note that the permit hasalready been received. Don’t delay phone your entry in today. Can you stop BenWilliams or Matt Pearce winning again?

For those who were around 30 years ago you will remember hisexcellent performances at the Bank House Autotests, and also someexcellent results in Motoring News road rallies, winning the club’srally championship in 1973 with Dick Wright. Dave tells me thatarrangements are well in hand for him to take up an entry in theWoodpecker Rally using a hire car (probably an Imprezza). His onlyproblem seems to be a co-driver. Does anyone fancy sitting alongsidehim? If so give Dood a call on 01531 821398 and he will put you intouch with Dave

Part two - Racing Emotions

Motor Racing is a highly emotionally charged pastime. Anyone can imagine thatsitting on the grid waiting for the lights to go out, pulses will skyrocket and it’s plainthat a ‘red mist’ frequently inspires some daredevil ( or plain stupid ) attempt atovertaking.

But what non-racers might be surprised about is just how intense every single corneris and how much more extreme the experience is even when just testing in anon-competitive way. I hope the following piece, which I wrote very early on in mybrief circuit racing career, gives you some flavour of it.

-.-.-.-.-

So here I am, driving past the pits at Silverstone. I have been doing this most of theday and still the novelty hasn’t worn off. I am driving over the same tarmac thatHamilton, Mansell and Clark have driven over and my mood is absolutely euphoric. My foot is hard down and the car is passing through the 100 mph mark and this timeI am determined to push hard through Copse to make a really strong start to a flyinglap that I can truly be proud of.

As I approach the 100 yd corner marker, still with my foot hard on the throttle, I getthe first twinge of anxiety. What if I brake too late and spin off? I have donereasonably well so far; I’ve survived a few scares and kept on the black bits most ofthe time. If I went off now, in this corner, at this speed, I’d not only look a rightchump but I might seriously damage the car and maybe myself into the bargain. Theanxiety is now multi-layered. Fear of failure, fear of embarrassment and fear ofinjury all compete for attention but I force myself to go just a bit further than I havepreviously before I stamp hard on the brake pedal.

Oh, the relief of feeling the brakes bite and the speed dissipate. I can’t actually seeround the corner yet but slowing down converts the anxiety about crashing into anew concern – what if I slow down too much and totter round like a pathetic oldhas-been?

I summon up some courage from somewhere and force myself off the brakes andback onto the throttle. I find this quite unnatural as I still can’t see the corner and I’m

Going Round and Round

sure that I’ve committed myself too early and too much to make it all the way roundwithout a huge accident. But the fear of the instability caused by turning in on theoverrun is greater then the fear of dealing with a slide so, with my heart in mymouth, I squeeze the loud pedal and turn the steering wheel towards where I thinkthe apex is.

Now I can see the corner and I’m quite sure that I’m going too fast but I’m still tooscared to lift and so I aim the car at the apex kerb and hang on tight. As the insiderear wheel rides up the kerb it unbalances the car and the offside wheel can’t gripthe road sufficiently. A real panic hits as I feel the rear of the car break loose but bythe time the thought has struck, I realise that my subconscious has already eased thesteering wheel back to compensate and the grip has been restored.

My foot, which had been quite tentatively pressing the throttle, is now hard againstthe bulkhead and the car is building speed again as we head towards the outside kerband the following straight. Briefly, I experience exuberant delight at having surviveda scary moment and already my imagination is expanding that instinctive reactioninto an epic triumph of skill over certain calamity.

But before I can relax too far, I perceive that the car is running straight and true andaccelerating hard down to Becketts but I’m a good foot away from the exit kerb.Damm! I could have, should have, gone faster! I’m annoyed with myself for beingpre-occupied with my own survival and embarrassed at my conceit in thinking I’ddone quite well! My anger sparks a determination to really push deeper into the nextcorner and make sure that this is the fastest lap I’ve ever done.

This whole episode has lasted a few seconds. In that time I’ve covered about a halfa mile at between 85 and 105mph and I've had more emotional reversals in that timethan in the previous decade. I’ll do something similar four times a lap, for ten lapsat a time in at least six sessions before the day is out. Tomorrow I won’t have theemotional energy to carry on a sensible conversation but just for today, I’MAT SILVERSTONE!

31 Historic MGs qualified at Mallory Park for the HRDC Queen's Diamond Jubilee MGCelebration race on 4 June. With the Jubilee weekend's weather having been one oftorrential rain, the skies brightened for the Bank Holiday Monday Motors TV meeting, where this HRDC 30-minute race was the feature race.Historic ace Andy Newall qualified Sir Anthony Bamford's JCB works MGB roadster8DBL on pole, half a second in front of a determined Andrew Bentley in his FIA MGBroadster. Mark Ashworth and Marc Campfield (the latter in his father's newly-restoredworks MGB rally car BRX854B) took the second row.Interrupting the FIA MGB closeout at the sharp end of the grid was the surprise ofAdam Gitting's diminutive MG Ashley GT and Jim Baynam in the Willhire 24 HoursMGB prodsports racer. Further down the grid was the 1965 works Le Mans MGB ofveteran Barry Sidery-Smith and the sublime Counes coupe MGB of Bob Ridgard. The 'Four Magnetteers' of Graham Bryant, Bruce Chapman, Julius Thurgood andRichard Dodkins made MG history by entering this unique race event with their veteranZ-Series Magnette racers - with a combined total of some 120 race seasons betweenthem!Such was the eclectic content of this historic MG grid that it contained the two MG1100racers of Shaun Rainford and Steve Atkinson, plus five MG T-type racers, this lattergenre of MG racers sadly now rarely seen in significant numbers at historic events. The race fulfilled its expectation as the crowd pleaser of the day, with superb battlesranging throughout the field. The opening lap as not easy for Newall in the JCB worksMGB, who out-braked himself into the hairpin to let a determined Campfield by in hissimilar works MGB. But Campfield was struggling with an overheating engine and waspassed by both Newall and Ashworth and there the order stayed, until both Campfieldand Ashfield eventually pulled out with engine troubles. The vastly-experienced Newallwas then never headed for the remainder of this 31-lap MG bonanza.Of special note was the stirring drive of Stuart Dean, in the unique Dick Jacobs MG YBSpecial coupe. Dean's super-smooth driving style picked off arguably much faster cars- to finish a superb 12th overall from a ninth row start, gaining a convincing class winand fastest lap in the process. A gritty drive by Adam Gittings in the works-built MGAshley GT saw him climb to as high as third place, until he accidentally flipped hisignition switch going through the tight Mallory hairpin; the delighted pilot still claimedfifth overall, first in Class and a Fastest Lap for his efforts.HRDC Race Director Julius Thurgood, commented after the race: "We worked hard tobring all these elements of historic MG racing together for this special televised eventand the reception received was unanimously positive - so much so, that we intend torepeat this format at Donington on 28 July at the COYS-sponsored HRDC COYSINTERNATIONAL TROPHY MEETING. I am especially pleased to be able to offer asympathetic race format to the T-types and am looking forward very much to seeingthem race in larger numbers with the HRDC at Donington".
