– liebe leSerin, lieber leSer

SWISS goes west – San Francisco heisst unsere neue Langstreckendestination. If you’re going to San Francisco …».

Willkommen an Bord!

Herzlich, Ihr Harry Hohmeister

– Dear reaDer SWISS is heading west: San Francisco is to become our latest longhaul destination. So if – in the words of Scott McKenzie’s timeless song – you’re going to San Francisco, we’ll be delighted to take you there on one of our new sixtimesweekly services from Zurich from next June onwards.

While the market environment remains tough, SWISS continues to post blackink results and invest in new services, product enhancements and advanced new aircraft, and to expand its schedules. That we are able to do so is due first and foremost to the confidence our customers continue to place in us. So thank you, on behalf of everyone at SWISS, for your continued business.

San Francisco and the surrounding Bay Area are home to numerous regional offices and production facilities of major Swiss corporations. At the same time, several large USbased companies have their European headquarters in Switzerland.

Zurich and San Francisco are sister cities, too, underlining their many years of close and fruitful friendship. And I am convinced that our new nonstop service between Zurich and San Francisco will further strengthen and deepen these ties.

Welcome aboard!

Sincerely, Harry Hohmeister

– Dear reaDer In 2003, I signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Zurich’s thenmayor, the Hon. Elmar Ledergerber, which officially designated Zurich and San Francisco Sister Cities. Zurich and San Francisco agreed to jointly initiate a number of environmental, academic, cultural and business partnerships and longterm exchanges. At the top of our wish list was a mutual desire to pursue a regular, nonstop flight between Zurich and San Francisco. It is with great pleasure today that I congratulate Swiss International Air Lines on helping fulfill that desire with its new six-day per week flight from Zurich to San Francisco, commencing 2 June, 2010. This premium service from a premium airline will provide an efficient and pleasant bridge between our two cities, which arguably are two of the most beautiful cities in the world. San Francisco is one of the most innovative, enterprising and welleducated cities in the world. Its unique combination of geographical beauty and dynamic, creative environment draws the brightest minds from all over the world; 70% of San Franciscans over 18 have received training beyond high school, and nearly 50% speak a language other than English. The result is an unmatched natural and cultural diversity that continues to contribute to the forwardthinking atmosphere for which the city is famous. What’s more: the city of San Francisco has been consistently ranked as the “Best City in the U.S.” – earning that title by “Condé Nast Traveler” readers for 19 years in a row, and the business world tends to agree;

welcome 1

throughout its history, San Francisco has attracted entrepreneurs from around the world and is home to some of the most highly regarded businesses. I am pleased that Swiss International Air Lines has selected San Francisco International Airport (SFO) as its point of entry to northern California. A traveler’s first, and last, impression of a city is its airport. It is incumbent upon a city’s airport to provide passengers with a welcoming environment, a sense of place and a pleasant and troublefree experience. SFO excels in all of these categories. I am proud that SFO has consistently been on the cutting edge of technology, safety and security measures and excellent customer service. SFO, which in 2008 was voted “Best Airport in North America” by Skytrax, an independent international survey, offers a wide array of amenities to passengers. Importantly, SFO has the shortest passenger screening wait time of any airport in the United States. Processing through the immigration hall is a breeze – with Airport Ambassadors that collectively speak 14 languages ready to assist passengers. SFO also offers hundreds of daily flights throughout the United States for connecting passengers. On behalf of all San Franciscans, we welcome Swiss International Air Lines to our beautiful city – and we thank you for embracing San Francisco as your newest destination. We look forward to contributing to your airline’s success, both today and far into the future.

Sincerely, Mayor Gavin Newsom

–As idyllic as the USA’s most European metropolis may seem, The City, as the locals refer to it, is a hotbed of revolutionary thought. The Beatniks of the 1950s liberated an entire generation from rigid thought structures. A decade later the flower children of the city’s HaightAshbury launched the Summer of Love. And at the beginning of the 1970s a selfassured homosexual community created a vibrant sanctuary in the Castro District amid romantic villas. Then Silicon Valley conquered the world on the winds of the information revolution. Today, San Francisco is at the vanguard of USA’s green movement. The stimulating, laidback atmosphere lures free thinkers, intellectuals and creative forces from around the world – it’s a colorful melting pot of different cultures and ethnic groups. In 1989 San Francisco was rocked by the largest earthquake to hit the area since 1906. That same evening, people held afterquake parties. There are two things one can always count on in San Francisco: the romantic fog that floods over the bay almost daily, and the unshakeable spirit of The City’s residents. •

It’s a rare city that can claim to be as beautiful as the one located at the north end of its namesake peninsula – the breathtaking view of the Golden Gate Bridge, between the frothy Pacific and the expansive bay, the delightful charm of the Victorian houses and the incomparable hills and steep streets of San Francisco.
