Global Goals:

1. SWBAT learn all 4 competitive strokes to mastery level by the end of the unit. 2. SWBAT demonstrate 3 different swimming survival skills during the water safety portion of the unit.

3. SWBAT perform rhythmic breathing freestyle for 25 yards at the end of the unit.

OBJECTIVES:

Psychomotor

1. SWBAT hold their breath and pick up 2 toys under water in the shallow end. 2. SWBAT demonstrate the back float and front float without moving their arms or legs. 3. SWBAT tread water for one minute unaided using proper technique (paws, not forks when sculling, egg beater kick with legs,

keep your face dry). 4. SWBAT perform the elementary backstroke with frog kick for 25 yards. 5. SWBAT swim the freestyle using good technique (elbows high paws dry) for 25 yards. 6. SWBAT swim the freestyle using rhythmic breathing every 3rd stroke for 25 yards. 7. SWBAT swim the backstroke focusing on keeping their stomachs dry and keeping eyes to the sky for 25 yards. 8. SWBAT frog kick in the stream line position for 12.5 yards. 9. SWBAT perform the 2 dolphin kicks, 1 arm pull and breathe butterfly drill for 25 yards. 10. SWBAT demonstrate how to assist a drowning victim in the event of an in water emergency.

Cognitive

1. SWBAT define proper locker room procedures prior to entering the pool when asked by the teacher. 2. SWBAT describe cues for floating when asked by the teacher in the closure. 3. SWBAT tell their partner when you would use the skill of treading water during a partner assessment. 4. SWBAT list the cues for streamlining to the teacher during the lesson closure. 5. SWBAT explain correct backstroke technique during the written assessment given at the end of the lesson. 6. SWBAT identify how many people are on a relay team when asked by the teacher during the lesson closure. 7. SWBAT recognize which kind of kick goes with each Olympic swimming stroke when asked on the written examination at the

end of the unit. 8. SWBAT describe when it is appropriate to use CPR and First Aid when tested at the end of the lesson. 9. SWBAT tell the teacher when it is safe to perform a dive when asked at the closure. 10. SWBAT name three symptoms of heat exhaustion for the quiz given at the end of the lesson.

Affective

1. Students will respect classmates by not teasing and putting others down for different ability levels of students throughout the whole unit.

2. Students will work together to complete the relay races as a team by finishing each relay race and cheering on their teammates. 3. Students will appreciate that swimming is a lifetime sport by having students keep a swimming log throughout the year. 4. Students will assist, coach, and help others who are struggling by using cues, positive and corrective feedback. 5. Students will show the teacher respect by obeying pool rules, and locker room procedures throughout the unit.

Fitness

1. SWBAT participate in the freeze tag fitness activity in the shallow end for 5 minutes at the beginning of class. 2. SWBAT kick with board- 3 lengths, 2 lengths, and 1 length with 10 seconds rest until they complete the set during the fitness

activity. 3. SWBAT aqua jog in deep end with floatie belts for 6 minutes. 4. SWBAT use breath control during 8x25’s focusing on keeping long strokes during the fitness activity. 5. SWBAT social kick with boards for 6 minutes during the fitness activity at the beginning of class.

Safety Considerations There are many safety issues when it comes to the swimming unit plan. Here are a few of the major ones.

1. Always have a certified lifeguard on duty at all times. 2. Make sure swimmers that are not comfortable in deep waters know where the pool drops off.

3. Have a buddy system to keep track of all students. 4. No running on pool deck.

5. No diving in shallow water. 6. Teacher should be first aid & CPR certified.

7. Before diving make sure area is clear of others

Day One Swimming Intro Activity: Swim as far as you can using any strokes for 2 minutes. Fitness Activity: Freeze tag in the shallow end. Lesson Focus: Pool safety/Water orientation and adjustment -Lockeroom proceeducres -entering the pool: feet first, first time -blowing bubbles -looking for objects under the water with goggles Culminating Activity: Game where you throw dive toys into the water and students pick up as many as they can. Day Two Swimming Intro Activity: Kick as far as you can in 2 minutes. Fitness Activity: Kick with a board—3 lengths, 2 lengths, 1 length with 10 seconds rest in between. Lesson Focus: Floating -Back float -Front float -Turtle float -Deadman’s float Culminating Activity: Game of Sharks and Minnows

Lesson Focus: Treading water -Use paws, not forks when sculling -Egg beater kick with legs -Keep your face dry Culminating Activity: Game of Waterpolo Day Four Swimming Intro Activity: Tread water for 2 minutes. Fitness Activity: Aquajog in deep end with floatie belts for 6 minutes. Lesson Focus: Elementary Backstroke -Finning on back with flutter kick -Little bird, big bird, FLAP with flutter kick -Elementary backstroke arms with frog kick Culminating Activity: Game of Marco Polo using elementary backstroke.

Day Five Swimming Intro Activity: Swim the elementary backstroke for 2 minutes. Fitness Activity: Kick with fins, without a board—3 lengths, 2 lengths, 1 length with 10 seconds rest in between. Lesson Focus: Freestyle -Human stroke—hands sliding under the water, head down, fast flutter kick -Elbows high, paws dry -Breathe when you need to -Use streamline when pushing off of walls Culminating Activity: Relays Day Six Swimming Intro Activity: Swim freestyle for 2 minutes. Fitness Activity: Breath control 25’s—8x25’s 5 breaths-4 breaths-3 breaths-2 breaths with 20 seconds rest in between each 25. Lesson Focus: Rhythmic Breathing-Freestyle -Using kickboards: (keep one ear in the water when breathing) -stroke and breathe with same arm -stroke don’t breathe, stroke and breathe -don’t breathe, don’t breathe, breathe (RB 3) -without kickboard, swim FR with RB 3 Culminating Activity: Game of underwater hockey in shallow end. Intro Activity: Swim freestyle with RB3 for 2 minutes. Fitness Activity: 3x100’s Freestyle—slow-medium-fast. Get HR up and wait for everyone in lane to finish before starting the next 100. Lesson Focus: Backstroke -Finning on back with flutter kick -Double arm backstroke ( thumbs out, little pinkies back in ) -Keep your eyes to the sky Culminating Activity: Game of football in the shallow end. Day Eight Swimming Intro Activity: Swim backstroke for 2 minutes. Fitness Activity: 4x50’s backstroke—right arm, left arm, double arm, swim Lesson Focus: Breaststroke -Frog kicking with boards -Frog kicking in streamline position -2 frog kicks in streamline, sneak a breath -Breaststroke arm pull -2 frog kicks, 1 arm pull and breathe -Breaststroke swimming—1 frog kick, 1 pull and breathe Culminating Activity: Relays Day Nine Swimming Intro Activity: Swim as far as you can breaststroke for 2 minutes.

Day 1 Students will play a game of Freeze Tag in the shallow end. Teacher will pick 1-2 students who will be “IT” other students will try to avoid the taggers. If students get tagged they are frozen and cannot move. Students may be unfrozen if a student swims under their legs. Fitness Concept: Cardiovascular endurance Day 2 Students will kick with a kick board. 3 lengths, 2 lengths, 1 length with 10 seconds rest in between each segment of lengths. Fitness Concept: Muscular endurance Day 3 Students will do 3 sets of 10 bobs (jump up and down in the water, when head goes under water, blow bubbles) in the shallow end.
