Alexandra Kosteniuk is nineteen years old. She lives in Russia, but
this week she is staying at a hotel in Paris. She’s giving interviews
for TV programmes and newspapers. Photographers are taking
photos of her for fashion actress. But Alexandra isn’t a model or a
famous actress. She’s a chess player.
When she’s at home, Alexandra plays chess at her local chess club in
Moscow, but this week she’s competing in the Paris Championship.
Chess isn’t just a hobby for Alexandra. She studies it five or six
times a week for six hours each time. “I can’t say that chess is fun
for me”, she says. “This is my profession. I play to win”. And she
wins a lot. In fact, she’s one of the best chess players in the world.
When she wants to relax, she likes writing poems and playing tennis.
At home in Russia, Alexandra wears casual clothes, but today she’s
wearing glamorous clothes for the photographers. She loves being
“the face of the modern chess”. A lot of young people hate playing
chess because they think it’s boring. She wants to change it and she
says that it is as spectacular as playing football or basketball.

Dear Paul!
Oxford is fantastic! I have / am having a great time here and I study / am studying English very

This city is beautiful and its costumes are amazing! I often am eating / eat fish and chips for lunch,
because it is really tasty. One thing that surprises me is that when you meet / are meeting

- an action that is happening at the moment;
- future arrangements.
b. We use this tense to talk about habits and routines.

In English, we do not say each syllable with the same force or strength. In one word, we say
one syllable very loudly (big, strong, important) and all the other syllables very quietly.
There are two very important rules about word stress:
1. One word, one stress. (One word cannot have two stresses) 2. The stress is always on a vowel. 3. Don’t stress a prefix.

INTRODUCTION
The United Kingdom is made up of four different countries: England,
Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. Do they have the same
customs? Do you want to learn their customs? This time you are
going to find out by means of internet what kind of customs there
are in England, Ireland, Scotland and Northern Ireland. That is
because understanding culture will allow you to respect others
feelings as you encounter them in the world. Moreover, it will
help you learn more things about the great British culture. You have 100
minutes. HAVE FUN!!!
THE TASK
Your class assignment is to research the culture of the
countries that made up the United Kingdom. Work in groups
of 4 and make a collage on an A-3. In that collage you have to
describe the area by means of culture and customs. You can
paste pictures and write things. The areas to explore are:
clothing, music, food, popular games, manners, customs,
religion and famous people. Each pupil is responsible for 2
sections. At the end, each group will do an oral presentation
explaining their collage. Moreover, the teacher will ask you
how you feel about those cultural customs.

By underground
The London Underground, usually called 'the tube', is enormous and can take you everywhere quickly. However, it is hot and uncomfortable in the summer, and can be confusing for tourists, who often get on the wrong train. It can also be very crowded in the 'rush hour' (7.00-9.00 in the morning and 5.00-7.00 in the evening).
By bus
The buses give you a good view of the sights, especially if you travel upstairs, but if the traffic is bad, your journey can take a long time. Special tickets, called travelcards, can be used on both buses and the underground and are quite economical.
By taxi or car
Taxis are excellent, but very expensive. Never take a car into central London - it's nearly impossible to park, and you also have to pay a congestion charge (currently £5) every time you drive into the centre.
