SwediSh CompanieS in nepal
It is a great honour for us to present the first edition of the Sweden-Nepal Business Guide. Trade between our two countries are already on a strong footing and Swedish companies are positively contributing to the economic growth of Nepal, but we firmly believe that there is scope to increase these ties further. Our hope is that this Business Guide will be a valuable tool both for companies already in Nepal as well as for companies looking to tap into the Nepalese market.
Nepal is about three times smaller in size than Sweden, but its youthful population of 28 million is almost three times larger than Sweden’s population, making it an interesting market for Swedish companies. Nepal’s strategic location between India and China, two of the biggest and fastest growing economies in the world, as well as its abundant natural resources offer great potential for future economic growth in a wide range of areas.
To further grow the Nepal’s economy, the Nepalese government has identified infrastructure, healthcare and energy as some of the key focus areas and these are all fields in which Swedish companies offer excellent solutions. We stand ready to collaborate with Nepal on this journey.

ThE SWEDISh SOCIETY AND ECONOMY
Sweden is consistently ranked as one of the most competitive economies in the world by the World Economic Forum. It is known for its rich natural resources, innovations, high-tech companies and caring society. Freedom of expression, gender equality, a deregulated economy and reformed central government finance combined with an efficient welfare and social security system have contributed to the societal and economic development.
In an international comparison, Swedish is a very open economy - to international trade and investments. Exports account for almost half of Swedish GDP, consisting largely of manufactured goods, such as vehicles, machinery, pharmaceuticals and forest industry products. Trade in services is large and growing, especially in areas of business services, travel and transportation. Asia is an increasingly important export market for Swedish companies, even larger than the North- and South American markets combined. Imports to Sweden from Asia have also grown over the years.
Sweden is among the leading research nations in the world. As an advanced industrial nation, research plays a key role for economic development as well as for society at large. Innovation and co-creation are important for tackling major challenges. Today, Sweden ranks as one of the most innovative countries in the world.
It has a long history of international commitment to pursuing active global cooperation on sustainable development. This has led to Sweden being in the forefront of developing new environmental technologies and sustainable system solutions. This includes renewable energy, green buildings, waste management, air and water treatment, sustainable fuels and battery-driven vehicles. Swedish industries are in particular innovative also when it comes to life science, IT/telecom, automotive industry, mining and pulp and paper.
Sweden is a strong player in the cultural and creative industries. These industries play an increasingly important role in the growth of the Swedish economy and are driving forces for innovation in other sectors of society and industry as well.

ThE SWEDISh SOCIETY AND ECONOMY
Creative industries include professionals and entrepreneurs within fashion and design, film, communication, literature and music, performing arts, computer games and gastronomy.
Swedish citizens are encouraged to take the chance and start new businesses, which is one of the key factors to the development of many successful Swedish companies. According to the global Entrepreneurship monitor (GEM) 2014, the number of entrepreneurs in Sweden have doubled since 2006.

SWEDEN – NEPAL RELATIONS
Sweden has been supporting Nepal, both through its development cooperation and through its support to multilateral organisations throughout the years, especially in the field of water and sanitation. In response to the devastating earthquake in the spring of 2015, Sweden has so far provided close to 10 million USD for emergency relief and Swedish companies such as Ericsson also provided support in the relief phase.
Sweden and Nepal established diplomatic relations on 10 June 1960 and enjoy excellent bilateral relations. The Swedish ambassador in New Delhi is accredited to Nepal and the Nepalese ambassador in Copenhagen is accredited to Sweden. Both countries also have honorary consulates in each other’s capitals. On a people to people level, more and more Swedish tourists travel to Nepal to experience the natural beauty and hospitality of the country.
Swedish-Nepalese trade in goods is still at rather low levels with around 5 million USD in 2014. Given this figure, there is potential for increased trade. Sweden mainly exports machinery to Nepal and imports carpets and garments. There are already about 20 Swedish companies present in Nepal, both through subsidiaries and through local distributors. There are industrial companies such as Atlas Copco and Alfa Laval, telecommunication companies such as Ncell, part of the Telia Sonera Group, and pharmaceutical companies such as AstraZeneca, just to mention a few. Swedish companies and solutions are a good fit for the ambitions Nepalese plans to further industrialise the country and build up its critical infrastructure. With their focus on innovation, sustainability and low life-cycle cost firms from Sweden are ideal partners for Nepal in business and development.
