Educational Programme

All courses are delivered in English, except language specific courses. Key Stage 4: Years 10 and 11

IIn Years 10 and 11 we offer both I/GCSE (International General Certificate of Secondary Education) and GCSE (General Certificate of Secondary Education) courses by Edexcel and Cambridge Assessment International Examinations boards. Both of these examination boards are highly respected, rigorous and fully equip our students to continue their education in any system beyond Year 11. Students generally study between 8 and 11 I/GCSEs. All students study English, Mathematics, sciences and a world language plus a number of option subjects.

The core offer for most students is First Language English, English Literature, Maths, sciences, and a World Language. Students undertaking English as a Second Language do not do English Literature.

Final examinations are taken at the end of Year 11. Results of coursework and practical assessments are often combined with examination results to determine the final grades. In most subjects, the final examination grades at I/GCSE are based upon an eight point scale of A*-G. In subjects which follow the Edexcel GCSEs, students will be graded on a 9-1 scale (with 9 being the highest).

GCSE and I/GCSE results represent the usual level of entry to Advanced Level Courses – AS in Year 12 and A Level in Year 13.

Six th Form: Years 12 and 13

The curriculum in Years 12 and 13 offers a combination of AS Level, A Level and International A Level courses run by four UK-based examination boards: Cambridge Assessment International Education, International AQA, Oxford AQA, and Pearson Edexcel. All of these examination boards fully equip students to continue their education in any system after Year 13. Final examinations are taken at the end of Year 12 (for subjects which offer AS Level qualifications) and Year 13 (for two-year A Level courses). Grading at AS is A - E with A* being available at A Level.

The school offers courses in Art, Biology, Business Studies, Chemistry, Computer Science, Drama, Design Technology, Economics, English Literature, French, Geography, History, IT, Japanese, Mandarin, Mathematics, Further Mathematics, Media Studies, Music, Physical Education, Photography, Physics and Psychology for students to choose from. Most students start with four AS subjects and continue with three at A Level. Many students also study for the EPQ (Extended Project Qualification) – an independent research project which involves writing an essay of 5,000 words, creating a product, or putting on an event. An EPQ is a Level 3 Qualification.

Students at Bangkok Prep complete a range of Community Service activities across the two years of Sixth Form which includes in-class assistance, where they volunteer to support teachers with younger students. In addition, many students plan and teach lessons to visiting refugee students whose ages range from three years to eighteen years.

Currently the following subjects follow two year Linear A Level programmes: Design Technology, Drama, English Literature, French, Japanese and Physical Education

Curriculum

Key Stage 3: Years 7, 8 and 9

In Key Stage 3 students study a broad and balanced curriculum based on the National Curriculum for England. This is adapted in part to suit our international context. Students study Art, Computing, Drama, Design Technology, English, Geography, Global Perspectives, History, Integrated Studies, Mathematics, Music, Physical Education, PSHE Education, Science, and two world languages. In Mathematics and Science, students begin their I/GCSE studies in Year 9. Students are assessed in relation to whether they are working towards (WT), meeting (M), exceeding (E), or significantly exceeding (SE) year group expectations.

I/GCSE Results 2019

We are pleased to announce our best I/GCSE results ever! All the hard work from staff and students has led to huge successes! Well done everyone!

The number of top grades is at its highest ever – 50% of all grades were either A* or A.

We are especially proud to announce an outstanding value-added score of +0.60. This means that, on average, students’ grades were significantly higher than expected when compared to similar students across the world. Recent research puts the average value-added attainment for English state schools at negative 0.09 and English private schools at +0.16, so our students have done exceptionally well!
