Local Designer | Ashard Richley

13

Recently SWAGG Magazine was invited to a preview of designer Ashley Burghardt’s collection here in Dallas at the Candleroom. We loved the collection and especially the beautiful well made hand bag that was in our Swag Bag! Ashley’s infatuation for design

was founded at an early age when her grandmother first taught her to sew. This childhood hobby became her dream as Ashley created a variety of dresses, purses, and swimsuits while in high- school. Ashley ventured to Florence for a semester abroad where she studied at Florence University of the Arts and discovered her niche: Accessories design.

The skills Ashley acquired proved invaluable as she pursued a internship with a high-end handbag and shoe line, Be&D, which required a move to New York City after graduation. Her collegiate experience coupled with a prestigious internship afforded Ashley a soaring start to her career as an assistant designer on Coach’s Reed Krakoff Collection. She later moved to Dallas where she was the head designer of a small accessories company before branching out to launch her own accessories line. Ashard Richley debuted in October of 2009 offering Ashley’s unique take on handbags that combines fashion, form & function. Since the company’s inception, the creative line has collected a surmountable number of accolades including appearances in several local and national magazines as well as featured on many television series. Ashley Richly handbags can also be found in over one hundred stores in the United States, Canada, and Costa Rica.

She appeared draped in a stunning Armani dress amidst the Dallas Symphony Hall in D- Magazine’s 2010 edition of Dallas’ Ten Most Beautiful Women. Ashley was also listed amongst the state’s top twenty designers by Texas Next Top Designer and was a coach to a young Dallas girl on MTV’s hit show, Made. Her most recent notable triumph was on the new Lifetime series 24 Hour Catwalk where she competed against three other talented designers to craft a collection within one day. Ashley’s designs championed the runway and a monetary grand prize.

Make sure you go to her website and check out her collection, you will be glad you did! www.ashardrichley.com

Dallas Art Gets A Makeover! This past year Dallas has finally proven itself worthy of housing the nation’s largest arts district. Projects completed, like the new Omni Hotel (featuring all local artist’s works) and the DMA’s Jean Paul Gaultier exhibit, have propelled the city to a new temperature of cool. The park connecting downtown to uptown and the completion of the Museum Tower overlooking the whole district will just add the icing to the cake. Now that Dallas is primed for a mega art culture boom, we would like to introduce The Art Menu.

David Hobbs is not an artist. David Hobbs is a devout lover and patron of local art, as well the owner and founder of The Art Menu. Started in the fall of 2011, The Art Menu specializes in providing affordable, top quality, limited edition giclée prints by the city’s premier local artists. Names like John Cook, Rick Griggs, Liz London and Scott Tucker appear bold and in large print on the recently launched website. The Art Menu also caters to the Dallas design world by meeting commercial specifications, with a wide variety of original and printed works available. Several of The Art Menu artists have had multiple works placed in commercial spaces around the city, including the new Omni Hotel. From the beginning, The Art Menu underwent the painstaking process of reviewing hundreds of portfolios to eventually build their elite roster of twenty artists. The Art Menu’s rigorous efforts have proven effective, as the company seems to be growing exponentially. David Hobbs and his twenty artists just may be taking over the Dallas art market, one print at a time.

“ We want to promote and expose talented local artists and make their works more accessible by offering limited edition prints on canvas. For many artists, it’s a hand to mouth existence, and we are changing that with every print we sell. There are great artists living in our own back-yard, and The Art Menu wants to make sure these artists get the respect they deserve. ”

YELAWOLF

Recently one of our Dallas area tattoo artists traveled to tat up rising rap star, Yelawolf, and with his unique style and videos with Kid Rock and Eminem we thought it was an appropriate time to feature him as our cover story!

18 www.swaggmags.com

For as volatile as it sounds, the actual dictionary term for “radioactive” leaves a lot to the imagination. But just as he does with every word he spits, Ghet-O-Vision/Shady recording artist Yelawolf gives it new life and meaning. Making it a fitting title for his official debut album. “I

think its a perfect word to describe where I’m going,” says the Alabama born rapper. “It’s the fallout, the aftermath of everything I’ve been through and here’s what’s left. This radioactive material.”

With a life story that no book could contain, the artist born Michael Atha could have auditioned for the “most interesting man in the world” title. Geograpically, he was born in a state that rests between Mississippi and Georgia but mentally he was raised in a state of constant change. Bouncing around between Alabama and Tennessee as a child, Wolf’s upbringing exposed him to the impoverished realities of both White America’s trailer parks and

Black America’s ghettos.

The duality would finally define itself on a fateful evening where his mother was playing host to a group of friends who happened to be the roadie crew for rapstars Run DMC. It was that night where Wolf, who was raised on a healthy dosage of Southern Rock, would hear songs like “My Adidas” and Beastie Boys “Paul Revere” for the first time. From that point on he knew that Hip Hop was now in his DNA. Unfortunately up to this point Wolf had to battle Hip Hop listeners who judged by outside appearance...but he’s winning that fight now.

After years of toiling in the rap chitlin circuit, the mixtape matrix and doing hooks for a spectrum of artists ranging from Juelz San-tana to Slim Thug, Wolf broke out in grand fashion with his criti-cally acclaimed independent release Trunk Muzik (Ghet-O-Vision Ent.) on New Year’s Day 2010. Prideful boasts on songs

Page 19: SWAGG MAGAZINE 2012

“ “

because of my slang alone. I can go to totally different places

Southern accent. because of mythat he can’t just rhyme There are words that I can

The cadence and the words I use. vocal. But the true difference is

between us,There is a fair comparison

like “I Wish” (“I wish a motherf*****r would tell me that I ain’t Hip Hop/B***h! You ain’t Hip Hop!) made listeners look beyond his tattoo-decorated skin and respect his skills. The excitement, paired with his unforgettable live shows, led to numerous magazine covers a record deal through Ghet-O-Vision/Interscope and then a partnership with Shady Records. The label founded by the man who many naysayers opted to unfavorably compare him to, Eminem.

He wastes no time taking you to these places on Radioactive. With an additional meaning of aspiring to be “active on the radio” the album’s first single “Hard White” featuring club music kingpin Lil Jon is a dark, 808-fueled uppercut that shows traces of the 3-6 Mafia influence he picked up while living in Tennessee. Wolf takes it even further on “Throw It Up” featuring former Mafia member Gangsta Boo and Eminem, pulling from both sides of the tracks he was raised on.

“Juxtaposition is very comforting for me,” he says. “You can’t stare at a square, that’s boring. But if it’s broken, you stare at it longer and try to figure it out.

This song is culturally impactful.”

With skateboarding being his first love before his affair with Hip Hop, Yelawolf already traveled the country living everywhere between California and New York, crashing on couches and park benches. So when he writes national anthems like “Made In the USA” that pairs lyrics about the dirt with a flowery hook, know that it comes from the perspective of a fly that has been in the dumps, not just on the wall.

“The grit and gutters are what I know the most about,” says Wolf who also had a stint as an artic fisherman in Alaska. “I always believed that the people who build the cars, clean the houses, dig the ditches and sell the drugs are the ones who make the world go round. As pretty as the hook is, it’s still sarcastic. The melody is great, but I was able to hide a real vocal point behind it.”

He continues to drive these points home on the tracks “Growing Up In the Gutter” featuring his Slumerican partner in rhyme Rittz and the instant smash “Let’s Roll” featuring fellow American badass Kid Rock. Both of which showcase his unique ability to shift gears from Southern Hip Hop to Southern Rock all the while remaining neutral in his own lane.

“I’m one of the most honest artists out there and I’ve always been this way,” says Wolf in mentioning his crotch-kicking manifesto “No Hands” where he shoots at naysayers and imitators. “It doesn’t matter what music I make whether I’m rapping on an 808 or over a guitar. I have a birth right to talk about these things that I do.”Radioactive is also Yelawolf’s opportunity to open up and share some of the non-musical experiences that have made him the man and artist he is today.

On “I See You,” a song inspired by a talk with his grandmother, he talks about hitting rock bottom before finally realizing that you had the best in life all along. With “The Hardest Love Song In the World” he stays true to the title admitting that it’s two partsdifficult writing a “rap ballad,” especially about the special type of woman he likes. Then in the appropriately named “The Last Song” he talks about his rocky relationship with his estranged biological father, for the final time. “I’m not mad at him and I don’t have a grudge,” he says. “But I just had to get that off, musically.”Though he’s been releasing material since the early 2000’s, Radioactive qualifies as Yelawolf’s official “debut.” Unlike his prior efforts that were recorded in basements and garages, only to be appreciated by his first core of loyal fans, this album was captured amidst rigorous touring, growing anticipation and now, expectation. If his ability to survive the last ten years are any indication, Wolf will rise to the occasion and beyond. “I see this album as my Southernplayalistic and I hope it does what “Hey Ya!” or “B.o.B” did for Outkast,” says the artist who was featured on Big Boi’s 2010 single “You Ain’t No DJ” that was produced by Andre 3000. “The goal of making albums is seeing where else you can go. I made sure everything I made was at the core, true to what i was.”

The two-time defending American League champion Texas Rangers are not standing by idly and enjoying their success as they strive to achieve the ultimate goal of bringing a World Series title to DFW. Rangers brass bid farewell to starting pitcher C.J. Wilson during the Baseball Winter Meetings held at the Hilton Anatole in Dallas, no less, as he signed with the division rival Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. The Angels also added former St. Louis Cardinals slugger Albert Pujols to the tune of $254 million over 10 years. But its inactivity in Dallas appeared to be part of a bigger master plan for Texas that involved the acquisition of the much-heralded staring pitcher Yu Darvish. The franchise’s financial commitment -- including the $5.7 million posting fee top Darvish’s Japanese club -- comes in the neighborhood of $112 million. Darvish is coming off the best of his seven seasons as a professional in Japan -- 18-6, 1.44 -- with the victories and ERA career highs, as were his 232 innings. He struck out 276 and walked 36.

There is also news at Rangers Ballpark itself which CEO Nolan Ryan said would be “the most extensive renovation in the history of the

park.” The Texas Rangers unveiled plans for the Batter’s Eye Club, an $11.5 million ballpark renovation that includes a

center-field club, two-level sports bar and restaurant. The club will include seating for 100 and be rented

during games for groups and, for selected games, individuals. The sparkling new Rangers-themed hot

spot will have a full glass wall facing the field and will be open before, during and after home

games and likely for rental when the Rangers are on the road.

Games of note in Arlington include April 6 (Opening Day) against the Chicago White Sox, April 23-25 vs. the New York Yankees, July 23-25 vs. the Boston Red Sox and September 28-30 against the Angels. And, of course, any night that Yu Darvish is on the mound will carry a little extra amount of buzz.

The Texas Rangers Welcome

YU DARVISH.

The Dallas Stars games were once the hottest ticket in town as they had a 238-game sellout streak in the late ‘90s and early 2000s crossing over from Reunion Arena to American Airlines Center. The Stars Club at Reunion and the Platinum Club at the AAC were some of the hottest ‘see and be seen’ spots in North Texas. With the Stars mired in financial turmoil and playing to their smallest crowds ever, averaging a league-worst 10,023 through the season’s eight home games, good news arrived in the form of new owner Tom Gaglardi. Gaglardi’s first move will likely to prove to be his best as he brought in Jim Lites to be team president. Lites is a familiar face to Stars fans as he was Stars president from 1993 to 2007, except for a brief stint in 2002 when he was president and CEO of the Phoenix Coyotes. The first initiative under new ownership was to lower individual ticket prices. The new prices affected most seating areas of American Airlines Center.

Attendance has skyrocketed as the Stars put together a six-game winning streak and an 11-game points streak that put them in the thick of the NHL’s Western Conference playoff hunt. While the Stars have some of the most loyal fans in the area, the fringe sports fan is taking note of the team’s recent success behind goalie Kari Lehtonen, forwards Jamie Benn, Loui Eriksson, Mike Ribeiro, Steve Ott and Brendan Morrow and defensemen Alex Goligoski, Trevor Daley and Stephane Robidas. And lest we forget, a highlight of watching the Stars games on TV is the insightful commentary of analyst Daryl “Razor” Reaugh. After catching just a few of the telecasts, you will be able to have your friends convinced that you never left the Stars fandom by virtue of your vast hockey knowledge.

“The fans spoke and we listened,” Gaglardi said. “We’re pleased that we can now offer a $9 ticket

and we feel that these new prices make Stars games more affordable. Our team needs a full building

every night to give us a true home-ice advantage.”

Hoop it up MAVERICKS!

PGA TOUR 2012

It seems like only yesterday that the Dallas Mavericks returned home from South Beach as NBA champions following their victory over the evil Miami Heat led by Dwyane Wade and LeBron James. There was a huge parade that flowed through the streets of downtown Dallas that seemingly brought all North Texans together as a united front with Dirk, Tyson, Jet, J-Kidd and Mark Cuban’s names in every conversation.

Then came the NBA lockout that extended to just prior to Christmas Day. When the work stoppage ended, it was time to say goodbye to many familiar faces including Tyson Chandler, J.J. Barea, DeShawn Stevenson, Caron Butler and Corey Brewer. While it was all done in a business sense as a means of complying with the new collective bargaining agreement and salary cap implications of “bringing the band back together,” it was still sad to see them leave. New faces included Vince Carter, Delonte West and Lamar Odom. In a testament to how great of a head coach Rick Carlisle really is, the Mavs have battled injuries and their fare share of distractions to remain in the playoff hunt in the condensed season that has taken its toll on plenty of the league’s veteran teams.

At press time, the Mavs have an NBA-best sold out 424 game home sellout streak that began on 12/15/2001. Dallas has also sold out an additional 58 playoff games during that stretch. With the building always at an apex be it the final seconds of a tight game or a performance by the Dallas Mavericks Dancers, it seems like many fans are hopeful that the Mavs can catch magic in a bottle and make another run at the trophy. Let’s be honest, when last year’s playoffs began, nobody predicted the Mavs could be the last men standing.

The month of May is a great time to be in DFW as the traveling carnival that is the PGA TOUR comes to town for two consecutive weeks with the HP Byron Nelson Championship and the Crowne Plaza Invitational at Colonial. Both tournaments are a great time and both are worth attending as the scenes are as different as Dallas and Fort Worth.

The action begins May 17-20 at the posh Four Seasons Resort and Club in Las Colinas with the Nelson. In the glory days of the Nelson 1997 through 2005, Tiger Woods participated all but one year and it would be a common occurrence to have crowds in the range of 100,000 people on Saturday and an overflowing Texas Stadium parking lot. These days, neither Tiger or Texas Stadium are to be found, but the

Pavilion (the tournament’s party area that includes the “After Dark” parties with live music) is still a great spot to hang out and enjoy some of the finer things Dallas has to offer. The other hot spots are the resort’s pool and the private parties in the mansions that line the

TPC fairways. The best places to go after play ends are Cool River Cafe and Sfuzzi Las Colinas. Basically, the Nelson week is one of the biggest parties in North Texas with a PGA event as its backdrop.

On the other hand, the Colonial (May 24-27) in Fort Worth is a nostalgic golf tournament with an encyclopedia’s worth of history on its enchanting grounds neighboring Texas Christian University and just south of the Cultural District. The tree lined fairways

and its famous stretch of holes 3, 4 and 5 known as the “Horrible Horseshoe” are familiar to the thousands of golfers who have yet to gain access to the exclusive course. Then again, Colonial long ago gained fame as a place where some of the most

beautiful women in Texas would venture to enjoy margaritas, amongst other things. The most dynamic place on the course is the 13th Hole, which has come to gain a party reputation with the friendly wagers and caddie races enjoyed by thousands of fans gathered around the short Par-3 over water. The hot spots are the air-conditioned Champions Club along the ninth fairway and through the guarded doors of the historic Colonial clubhouse. As an added bonus, golf phenom Rickie Fowler has made the trip to Fort Worth during the previous two campaigns, bringing huge galleries of adoring female fans with him. The best places to go following play are the West 7th corridor and the patio at Joe T. Garcia’s.

Between the two events, there is $12.9 million up for grabs in prize money.

2013 PorscheBoxster: Lighter, more muscular, more distinctive and more fuel-efficient

25

Auto Feature

Never before in the history of the Porsche Boxster has a change of generation been so comprehensive. The open-top two-seat car receives an entirely new lightweight body and a complete revamped chassis. The new Boxster weighs less than the previous generation and rides on a longer wheelbase and a wider track. These new dimensions are coupled with larger wheels and a new electromechanical power steering system to significantly enhance the mid-engine sports car’s driving dynamics. The new boxster boasts superior performance and is also up to 15 percent more fuel-efficient than the previous models on the European cycle.

The new sports car generation makes its debut in the classic Porsche pairing of Boxster and Boxster S. Both models are powered by flat-six engines with direct fuel injection, the efficiency of which is further enhanced by electrical system recuperation, thermal management and start/stop function. The base model’s new power unit delivers 265 HP from a 2.7 liter displacement – Ten HP more than its larger displacement predecessor. Technically, it is now based on the 3.4 liter engine of the Boxster S. This now delivers 315 HP, which is five HP more than before. Both models feature a manual six-speed gearbox as standard with the seven-speed Porsche Doppelkupplungs-getriebe (PDK) available as an option. Both Sports cars achieve their best fuel consumption and acceleration performance with the PDK. With gear changes without interruption to the power flow, the Boxster sprints from zero to sixty mph in 5.4 seconds, the Boxster S in 4.7 seconds.

The Boxster models are expected in U.S. showrooms in early Summer 2012. The basic list price will be $49,500 for the Boxster and $60,900 for the Boxster S, not including a $950 destination charge.

A PIECE BY HERby: Margaret Gronberg

26 www.swaggmags.com

The exhibit of Elizabeth Taylor’s jewelry was spectacular. The quality was stunning and it was all set on lavender displays. And I would be there when it sold the next day and I would have the chance to bid on it. The night of the sale, we rubbed elbows with everyone from those in his-and-hers fur coats to

young ladies trying desperately to look like Liz with their cheap satin gowns and costume jewelry necklaces across the forehead.

A piece I really wanted was an enamel and gold antique butterfly brooch with a pre-sale estimate of $10,000-$15,000. I could go as high as $18,000.00. The auctioneer announced the piece, I took hold of my paddle, ready to bid, when he said, ”Where shall we start? $25,000.00?” I hadn’t even had the chance to raise my paddle and the bids were sailing ever higher. It sold for over $100,000.00. Again and again, the prices shot through the roof and I realized I was going home empty-handed. But at least I could see the most fabulous jewels sold. The last lot of the sale was the 30 carat diamond. The air was tense and bidding came down to two people. Slowly, the auctioneer took one bid and then another, a long pause and then another. Finally, the hammer came down at $8.8M.

Page 27: SWAGG MAGAZINE 2012

That left only the online auction. I chose six pieces to bid on. The auction had rolling end times, and one by one, I lost the bids. That left only one more piece, a set of black onyx, coral and diamond jewelry. It ended while we were flying home. I placed my bid and got on the plane. Late that night, I logged on and discovered that I had won.

I’m thrilled to own a piece of Elizabeth Taylor’s jewelry. She had a wonderful eye for quality and style. It’s a style from the 60s and 70s that is back! Big, bold, yellow gold and colored stones. Every forty years or so, we add a new name to the list of collectible and antique jewelry. It’s time. Maybe it will be called the “Taylor” period.

The Meddlesome Moth is the latest venture by Dallas restaurateur Shannon Wynne. He, along with partners Keith Schlabs and Larry Richardson, have provided Dallas with a nice place to hang, drink some great beers, devour delicious food and listen to music. The Moth is located in Dallas’ Trinity Design District, on Oak Lawn at Hi-Line. Moth has a full bar featuring classic cocktails, extensive and seasonal wine list and the city’s best beer menu featuring 40 draught beers, two live ales and more than 85 bottles to help them round out their selection. Chances are if you’ve seen it in a commercial, they don’t serve it. New rare beer tappings happen each Wednesday at 4 PM. At lunch they offer a flavorful and healthy chef driven food menu. They source their food locally when they can and use farm raised local beef. The Dinner Menu begins daily at 4 PM and offers a variety of inter-esting small plates for guests to share and pair with beer or wine. Popular items include the Shrimpand Grits with Jalapeno Gravy, Lamb Pot Pie, Swiss Chard with ricotta gnocchi and pint nuts, Beef Bone Marrow with salsa verde and crispy capers and our Veal Sweetbreads with sweet and spicy bacon jam. Brunch is served Sundays from 11 – 3 PM and they feature press coffee from Oak Cliff Roasters.
