    SW-218V

    1.2. Overview the SW-218V Subwoofer

The Tecnare® SW-218V is a high-performance double-18-in hybrid Horn-Reflex subwoofer enclosure. It has been designed for medium to long-throw sound reinforcement. The response given with this subwoofer is very deep, starting at 38Hz. It delivers a tight “punch” combined with a low deep response.

The acoustic loading of the speaker, perfectly matched, prevents cones to over-excursions. It is a perfect solution for all kinds of touring systems.

As ideal option the Tecnare T20-44 amplifier is the adequate to power a SW218V. The Tecnare T20-44 ensures maximum driver protec-tion, and advanced crossover functions minimizing the risk of damage to the loudspeakers while yielding high constant output under high continu-ous and peak power conditions.

Thanks to its passive directivity, the SW-218V is prepared to work in a conventional setup as well as ar-ranged in a cardioid subwoofer configuration by combining physical deployment and the suitable preset.

The cabinet is assembled with 18 mm ply Baltic birch and has a weather resistant paint finish (Polyurea Protection), properly braced for intended use. The front of the cabinet is protected by a hex-stamped steel grille. Pro-tective runners are included at the bottom ensure securely align with the cabinet’s top slots. It features four handles. The subwoofer shall be connected via one 4-point speakON. Castors and protective covers can be supplied as an accessory.

    SW-218V

1.4. Processing and amplification Only operate a Tecnare® loudspeaker with a correctly configured Tecnare preset. Tecnare offer a complete solution that guarantees the highest level of performance. A complete range of controllers, amplifiers, and amplifiers with advanced DSP are available to get this goal. Otherwise, there is a risk of damaging the loudspeaker compo-nents.

    1.4.1. Processing

The Tecnare DP4896 is the approved processor for use with the SW-218V loudspeaker. Refer to DP4896 user manual.

Preset for DP4896 processors and TSeries amplifiers have been developed for the SW-218V. One pre-set for SW-218V loudspeaker are available:

    • [SW-218V] You may obteing the setting from the DP Series and TSeries at www.tecnare.com website.

    1.4.2. Amplification

To power Sub Series, Tecnare recommends amplifiers with the power ratings enough to feed the loud-speakers. For high power or live applications, it is recommended to oversize the amplifiers relative to the nominal AES output of the subwoofers. In certain specific cases it is possible to slightly under-power the subs or loudspeakers as long as the amplifier will not be driven to its limits.

In any case, the Tecnare processors should be deployed in front of the amp to ensure that the amplifiers do not go into the clip.

The DP4896 processors & TSeries amplifier include:

    - RMS Limiter - Thermal protection from power surges or overload - Excursion displacement protection - Multiband limiting for passive 2-way enclosures

The T20-44 amplifier is the ideal companion for maximum performance of the Sub Series loudspeakers. This amplifier controller amplifier with DSP offer a complete both preset and protection solution for any application. The SW-218V subwoofer can be driven by the T20-44, T10-44 & T20-48 amplifiers.

    SW-218V

    2. Loudspeaker Setup

    2.1. Standard Operation

The standard operation corresponds to the use of subwoofers as single elements or as standard subwoofer arrays.

In this configuration the system operates with a quasi-omni-directional directivity pattern due to its passive directivity control.

The [SW218V] factory presets provide to the subwoofers an upper frequency limit at 100Hz, in order to op-timize the coupling with main system or if other subwoofer are being used.

    2.2. Cardioid Operation

The SW-218V subwoofer can be configured in cardioid arrays to reduce the amount of output heard behind the subwoofers. Subwoofer cardioid arrays are archived by placing three units coplanar to each other with one unit facing the opposite direction. The output of the reversed subwoofer cancels the output of the other subwoofers nor-mally present behind the units.

Tecnare has specifically designed cardioid presets [SW218V_C]. However, we recommend calculating the appropriate ratio of forward to rear facing loudspeakers, as well as to measure of required parameter setting of po-larity, delay, and gain. For more information, contact Tecnare Technical Support.

    SW-218V

    3. Loudspeaker connection Tecnare® Sound Systems recommended operating the SW-218V loudspeaker together Tecnare loudspeak-er controllers.

Tecnare only recommends using preset/amplifier developed by Tecnare, otherwise there is a risk of damag-ing the loudspeaker components. DP Series Loudspeaker Controller, PA Series amplifier and T-Series amplifier are ideal for this purpose.

Ensure that the right preset was selected before connecting the loudspeaker with the amplifier.

Operating with an incorrect preset can damage part of the loudspeaker.

Ensure that the amplifier is properly size according to the requirements. Under-power or oversize power amplifier without the supervision of an expert may damage the loudspeaker.

Please note the technical specification section.

    SW-218V

    4. Integrating the SW218V

4.1. Integrating SW-218V subwoofer with Tecnare Louds-

    peaker Systems

The SW-218V subwoofer can achieve frequencies down to 40 Hz (-10dB), extending the system response appreciably and increasing the acoustic power of the system in the lowest frequencies. Common applications for the SW-218V subwoofer include using it with CLa208, CLa21 Curvilinear Array Loudspeakers, as well as using it with Ibza or V Series loudspeakers.

Bass performance is often highly program — or venue — dependent, as well as subjective as to measure and quality. For this reason the type, quantity, and disposition of subwoofers may vary considerably with the appli-cation. The quantity recommendations below are for general purposes, providing a balanced system for most music applications. Quantities may need to be adjusted up or down for specific situations.

Common applications for SW-218V which involves using the subwoofer with Array Series and ALIS Series, two loudspeakers for each subwoofer yield good performance in frequency and headroom.

If the sound program is demanding a higher level of low-frequency, using lower ratios in mid-high or full range sys-tems can increase the headroom at the low end of the spectrum (for example one loudspeaker for one subwoofer).

In the table below are some recommendations for the most frequent uses.

CAUTION: If the amplifier used with the SW-218V beging to limit before reaching the required SPL at low frequency, consider adding more subwoofer to satisfy the SPL re-quirements without exposing the driver to excesice heat/or excursion.

    SW-218V

    4.2. Placement for SW-218V

An important factor governing subwoofer response is their placement relative to adjacent surfaces. Subwoo-fers gain significant power by coupling (or loading) with nearby floors and walls. Placing any loudspeaker against a large plane (relative to the wavelength) produces a half-space loading condition, meaning that all the energy radia-ting spherically (equal energy in all directions) from the loudspeaker is now being radiated into a hemisphere, or half the area. This result in a 6 dB increase in energy radiating into the hemisphere, the same increase that happens by doubling the number of subwoofers, compared to the same subwoofer in the free space (suspended).

Subwoofer loudspeakers should be placed side by side. If it is not possible, the largest distance between two adjacent acoustics centres must be half-wavelength ( it is considering a maximun phase offset of 180º) of upper frequency limit (fr) of the subwoofer system to avoid one or more spurious side-lobes. It can be calculated through this equation:

The relationship of speed of sound its frequency and wavelength is:

where m is wavelength (in meters), c is speed of sound (in m/s), and f its frequency (in Hz).

The maximun distance of separation permitted (dc) is:

    Transport & Storage

    w w w . t e c n a r e . c o mSubwoofer Series | rev.:2.0

    SW-218V

    5. Transport and storage As the Tecnare SW-218V loudspeaker weighs over 85kg (188.49 lbs), four people are needed to move and transport the unit.

To transport the unit whit a single person, Tecnare recommends using the optional Caster kit wheels.

For touring and portable, the SW-218V can travel in stacks of up three units with an optional caster frame.

When transporting and storing the unit, it is important to ensure that the finish and front steel grille of the loudspeaker are not damaged. Moisture can penetrate through exposed wood surfaces and cause the wood to swell. A bent or broken front grille will no longer adequately protect the sensitive speaker membranes.

In addition, appreciable dust deposits may considerably impair the functionality of a loudspeaker membrane. For this reason, the loudspeakers should be transported and stored in a safe, careful, dry and largely dust-free man-ner.

Durable protective covers for one unit and accommodating stacks of two or three units are optionally avail-able to ensure the SW-218V is completely road ready.

Other options include weather protection and custom colour finishes for fixed installations and applications with specific cosmetic requirements.

The original packaging don’t should use as permanent storage and transport packaging.
