g40 art summit is a yearly group art show that brings together world renown artists for a month long exhibit with a different theme every year. this year’s show focuses on artwork that goes beyond the traditional two dimensional canvas. artists are challenged to approach their work in a multi dimensional format which will expand boundaries and grow possibilities. artwork will include layered canvases, art on found objects, free standing pieces, and many more creative approaches to the challenge at hand. the exhibit will take place at Blind whino for the second year running. the building’s many nooks and ample spaces provide the ideal backdrop for installations that will transform the space into living art. continuing with g40’s tradition of month long programming in conjunction with the exhibit, there will be a range of events and activities throughout the month for patrons to return multiple times. Besides the opening and closing receptions there will be special events like a wine showcase with performances by legendary musicians Brand nubian and Black sheep, as well as an outdoor arts and crafts showcase as part of the sw artsfest.

Washington DC, our nation’s capital, is renowned for its grand monuments honoring the history and achievements of great Americans. But behind the federal face of official Washington, there is a real city with distinctive neighborhoods filled with passionate citizens living their lives. For my curatorial contribution to 5 x 5, I envision nonuments— a temporary sculpture park featuring “monuments” devoted not to the great but to ordinary people, to the ideals of democracy, and to the common struggles of humanity.

I want to transform the vacant parcel of land located at 990 4th Street SW into a much needed public space. Currently, many pedestrians—adults and children—cut across the empty lots with nothing to look at or do. I feel that by placing beautiful and thought-provoking sculptures in that location the public will be engaged in a variety of ways. People driving by will see something fresh and new, with different appearances in the day and night.

My goal is to produce permanent monuments by creating temporary public artworks – nonuments. Each nonument tackles timely, relevant, and emotionally engaging concerns. The themes range from environmental concerns, the fight against human trafficking, the positive and negative challenges of development, immigration issues, and the human will to survive. By giving form to these issues, stimulating discussion, and possibly inspiring action, these temporary monuments will leave an ongoing, living legacy beyond the lifespan of any bronze statue. Whether a nonument raises awareness, issues a cry for help, or activates social change, its aim is engagement and dialogue, bringing together diverse groups of people.

Human trafficking is a criminal business that profits from enslaving people for sexual exploitation, forced labor and servitude. free the slaves estimates there are more people in slavery today than at any time in human history: 21-30 million. Peep examines the atrocity of human trafficking through semiotics and repetition. shipping containers are a common mode of transporting victims, therefore, the exterior of a metal shipping container will resemble a peep show with neon style lettering and rich vibrant colors. Port size windows will allow viewers to peer through and view hundreds of wooden children blocks hanging from above symbolizing a stolen childhood and the loss of innocence. rows of sewing machines echo the plight of darkness and survival of those forced into labor and with the haunting sounds of sewing machine motors never ceasing.

Migration is a “nonument” about leaving and finding home in a time of dramatic social and climatic change. Migration brings light to unnoticed communities that form the old growth urban ecosystem of washington, dc. these nests are much like neighborhoods now on the move, embracing, adapting, or resisting forces of gentrification now sweeping the city, and the world. Practically, each piece provides respite along the atlantic flyway for bird species like swallows whose nest sites and migratory patterns are shifting to adapt to climate change. these ‘condos’ may surprise and captivate neighborhood residents walking between home, work, and school as well. Migration is a chance for art to enter and enrich the everyday lives of people living in the city. the choice of organic forms and woven materials resonate with nesting, but also the emotional strain of being forced to move, and contrast with the geometry and scale of development in the capital itself. the generations that have lived in established communities in d.c. may see their own story in lives of the birds who make this piece home. ultimately, Migration may be moved to a suitable regional park, or arboretum to become habitat for nesting birds in the spring.

this row of planted trees is to encourage the residents to come and use the park and watch the trees grow over the years. they also help create different psychological spaces for the other artworks by subtly dividing the 1.5 acre lot into 5 exhibition spaces. since the city cannot maintain the trees in this particular location, I am donating them to other areas in the sw neighborhood and will be transplanted at the close of the Nonument exhibition.

Digging will take place over thirty days. Beginning with level ground the team will work daily to create earthen mounds. In the last four days the earth will be re-leveled. Participants in the performance will wear costumes representing different aspects of american culture like the service industry, business class, farmers, and criminals. using hand tools dirt will be accumulated into mounds. through more than 580 combined hours of labor Digging empowers each of us to face personal and social challenges. although this performance lends itself to many interpretations about the workplace, inequality, and politics, the mounds of digging are ultimately acknowledgements of everyone’s connection to the earth. the waterfront station neighborhood is blocks away from the nations capitol, an enormous monument with global implications. Digging will become a permanent “nonument” in our memory speaking to another kind of power.
