a

enture Philanthropy involves the four Ts – Time,

Talent, Treasure and Ties – and has been pioneered

by SVP Vancouver since 2001. To date, we have

worked shoulder to shoulder with 45 local

non-profits. In addition to countless hours of

volunteer time, professional expertise, services and

other resources, SVP has awarded over $4 million

in capacity building grants.

2013 was a year of renewal for SVP Vancouver and

generated strong momentum for growth and impact. This

momentum continued throughout 2014 and resulted in a

record year for our Foundation.

SVP provided a record amount of grants, totalling

$453,600 in 2014: $260,000 in follow-on funding

to eight existing Investees and $176,600 in funding

to four new Investees.

Co-Funding was further established as an

additional source of funds for SVP Vancouver,

totalling $156,000 in 2014. We extend our

sincere thanks to the Francis Family Foundation,

SpencerCreo Foundation, the Louis Family, PNG

Foundation, and the Elm Foundation for their

incredible generosity this past year. Visit this page

on our website for more information on becoming

a Co-Funder.

In partnership with Traction on Demand, and with

the support of two Co-Funders, SVP developed

a Salesforce CRM system for SVP Investees.

The system, which allows Investees to manage

a comprehensive database of their donors and

volunteers, has been successfully implemented by

ONE TO ONE Literacy and will soon be adopted by

Growing Chefs! and other Investees in the future.

Under the guidance of SVP Treasurer, Ron Klopfer,

SVP Vancouver revised our Donor Advised Fund

(DAF) program to more directly benefit SVP and

Investees. Our new program is a partnership

with Benefaction who provides professional

management and disbursement of SVP DAFs. Visit

this page on our website for more information and

the benefits of establishing a Donor Advised Fund.

Partner Engagement increased with the addition

of five new Investees and Partner satisfaction is at

a very high level, based on the results of our first

annual Partner Survey in April 2014.

Here are some key highlights from the past year:

Page 3: SVP 2014 Impact Report

SVP communications – newsletter, website, and

Twitter – greatly improved this past year and we are

beginning to realize greater public awareness and

unsolicited interest from prospective Partners and

Co-Funders.

Investee engagement and satisfaction are very

strong; significant value is being generated in all

areas of organizational capacity with the support

interactions with other SVP Investees.

Norm Francis was recognized as SVP Vancouver’s

first-ever Distinguished Partner for his incredible

support, stewardship, and service to SVP and our

Investees. Norm is a Founding Partner of SVP who

helped invest the initial capital for the organization

and in turn recruited other Founding Partners to

invest in the Foundation. Norm was a Director on

SVP’s Board for 12 continuous years, retiring only

in June 2013, and has been involved with a large

number of the 45 Investees SVP has supported over

the years. Norm was also instrumental in generating

over $600,000 in donations towards our Endowment

Fund, matched by the late Dr. Donald Rix.

Over the past year, SVP has become a more

mature, better functioning organization, enhancing

sustainability and execution, while creating a strong

base from which to grow. To support this growth and

further strengthen our philanthropic impact, SVP

hired a Manager, Communications and Engagement,

Gina Ungaro, in October 2014.

Philanthropy is a growth sector in our economy and is

attracting involvement and support from across generations

– Baby Boom, Gen X, Gen Y and the new Gen Z or what

is also being coined the iGen. SVP Vancouver provides

a unique model of community investment and volunteer

engagement that generates significant value for our

Investees and the community at large.

With the continuing support and involvement of our Partners,

SVP will realize its vision to ensure more children and youth

Thank you! Here’s to another great year at SVP.

Tanya Oliva, Executive Director

can reach their full potential.

We believe that nonprofits face many of the same challenges as new businesses. As entrepreneurs and business leaders, we’ve faced them ourselves. That’s why, in addition to providing capital, we contribute our expertise.

We get to know our Investees – their people, their goals, and their challenges – and we bring all of our professional skills, experience, connections and other resources to help build strong

Zero Ceiling Society

Zero Ceiling provides adventure-based learning and employment programs to empower at-risk and homeless youth, equipping them with key life skills and fostering personal growth. Zero Ceiling believes mountain experiences have the capacity to expand horizons and fuel positive lives. For 18 years, they have built on this concept to help at-risk youth go from streets to peaks. In 2014, SVP Vancouver granted Zero Ceiling $45,500 towards tripling the number of Work 2 Live

formalize their core programs. In the last year, a total of 306 youth participated in Zero Ceiling’s programs.

I attended the Take a Hike program (a former SVP Investee) for my Grade 11 and 12 years. Take a Hike gave me perspective and clarity about my wellbeing and impact on others. There, I learned that in order to take care of them, first I would have to take care of myself. This program helped me move forward on the path of finding out who I really am deep inside and what I want for my family and myself. This process also helped me realize my role as a person and sort out a huge part of my past. I noticed tremendous spiritual and physical progress during the camping trips and they ensured that I got through school all the way to graduating in 2014. Through this program I am now better equipped to manage stress. In addition, I was honoured with the opportunity to speak with the 14th Dalai Lama at Educate the Heart in October, 2014.

Yo Bro Youth Initiative (another SVP Investee) is my driving force and foundation. Here I accomplished a sense of self-worth and confidence. Rather than being on the streets, Joe Calendino (founder of Yo Bro) would get us in the dojo. I learned how to defend myself, fortified my purpose and had compassionate seeds planted in my mind. Joe always makes sure I'm doing something productive and that my family is supported with food and clothes. He is now working with my little brother Caleb and is helping him succeed. Through working with Yo Bro, I was introduced to Zero Ceiling.

The Zero Ceiling program is helping me transition from a boy into a man. I’m in an amazing environment to take on new responsibilities, challenges, learn more about myself, and be happy within. In the three months I’ve been in Zero Ceiling’s Work 2 Live program, I've made some serious strides towards goal planning, better communication, healthy decisions and self-management. I've made leaps in progress to

(punctuality, communication, financial management). Through the Work 2 Live program, I have the opportunity for long-term residence and work in Whistler, and I am having the time of my life learning how to snowboard on the number one mountain resort in North America.

All of these programs and the people involved with them have been powerful forces in my internal revolution and I am eternally grateful.

My name is Matthew Morin. All my life I have wanted to help others.

However, a lack of consistency, dependency on others, over-accommodating, and a stressful upbringing have prevented me from being capable of doing so to the extent that I should. Three SVP-supported programs have

KidSafe Project SocietyExecutive Director: Gerhard Maynard

KidSafe provides nurturing safe havens for vulnerable inner-city children. With SVP funding in 2013, KidSafe launched the KidLink program to help bridge the gap for KidSafe kids transitioning to secondary school. Thirty youth participated in its first year, receiving access to social programs and activities through community partnerships, monthly transit passes, and 400 hours of one on one support from the Program Coordinator. In 2014, SVP’s grant of $45,000 towards the Program Coordinator’s salary allowed 35 Grade 8 youth to enroll in KidLink, plus 18 Grade 9 students to continue to receive regular support.

Mom2Mom Child Poverty Initiative (M2M) is focused on improving developmental outcomes for children living in poverty by supporting their mothers through one on one mentoring. M2M volunteer mentors respectfully and compassionately give participating moms the tools and resources to be successful, nurturing parents. SVP’s $50,000 grant in 2014 enabled M2M to hire a full-time Executive Director to grow organizational capacity, improve board governance, increase volunteer recruitment, and develop a fundraising strategy. Last year, 60 volunteer mentors supported 32 families, including 52 children, representing an increase of 12 fami-lies since SVP’s involvement.

ONE TO ONE Literacy SocietyExecutive Director: Mary McGivernLead Partners: Norm Francis and Sam Znaimer

For 25 years, ONE TO ONE Literacy Society has provided literacy tutoring for elementary students in schools across Vancouver and the North Shore. SVP’s 2014 funding of $35,000 helped them to expand into nine more schools and two new school districts (Burnaby and West Vancouver), bringing the total number of tutored students to 840. In partnership with Traction-on-Demand, and a second-ary investment of $30,000 from SVP, Co-Funders and Traction-for-Good, ONE TO ONE implemented a Salesforce customer relationship management system, which proved to be vital at their current stage of growth to manage their growing pool volunteers and donors. In order to continue scaling, two of their primary fo-cuses are to increase the number of volunteers in new communities and package the ONE TO ONE program for replication in school districts beyond the Lower Mainland.

2014 SVP Grant - $30,000 including $15,000 in Co-Funding

Saint James Music Academy (SJMA) began in response to Vancouver’s inner-city children’s lack of access to high quality music education due to socio-economic issues. Inspired by the renowned El Sistema program in Venezuela, SJMA strives to improve cognitive development, socialization skills, self-empowerment, and musical aptitude. In 2014, SJMA reached 170 children in their after-school pro-gram and 250 through their outreach program, with enrolment steadily increasing each year. SVP Vancouver assists SJMA with strategic planning, fund develop-ment, program expansion and long-term sustainability. In 2014, SVP’s $30,000 grant went towards the continuation and increased hours of outreach activities at four partner schools in Vancouver’s inner-city.
