How to acclimate to your new community(MS) Moving is seldom easy. But even after all of the boxes have been unpacked and the furniture moved in, some of the difficulty of moving remains. Much of that remaining struggle can be traced to adjusting to your new environment.
Though many people settle into a new residence after a short period of time, acclimating yourself to a new community is a taller order, especially for those without friends or family already entrenched in the community. The following are a handful of ways men and women who recently relocated to a new community can acclimate themselves to their new surroundings.
* Join a local community organization. Local community organizations provide great opportunities to meet new people and learn about a town or neighborhood. Parents may find such organizations more accessible, as associations that focus on local youngsters are quite common. Adults can join parental organizations sponsored by their children’s school or volunteer with an extracurricular organization, such as a local youth sports program. These are great ways for moms and dads to meet fellow parents and begin forming new friendships.
Singles or married couples without children also can take advantage of community organizations. Volunteer with an environmental cleanup group or sign up to play in a recreational sports league with neighbors in your age group. Opportunities to assimilate into your new community abound, it just takes a little effort on your part to get involved.
* Make an effort to meet your neighbors. The days of yore when everyone knew their neighbors are largely a thing of the past, but that doesn’t mean you can’t make an effort to meet the people who live next door. Once you have settled in, knock on your next door neighbors’ doors and
introduce yourself. If you really want to go the extra mile, host a casual backyard barbecue and invite your neighbors and their families. Such
an affair can be a great way to break the ice and you might just find your neighbors share similar interests.
* Don’t be a shut-in. Communities are often home to numerous traditions, and many such traditions are aimed at increasing the sense of community within a given town. Summer carnivals or winter holiday balls can make for a fun way to assimilate into a community and meet your neighbors. Leave the couch and your television behind to take advantage of such opportunities when they present themselves.
* Join a professional organization. Many professionals find the demands of their careers are simply too great to give them the amount of time they need to fully assimilate into their new communities. In such instances, men and women might want to join their local professional organization, which can help them meet professional peers and make contacts that can pay both professional and personal dividends. If no such organization exists in your community, consider starting one.
The difficulty of moving is often considered a burden on children. But adults may struggle to acclimate to a new community as well. Making that adjustment and learning to thrive in your new community may require some creativity and a little extra effort on your part, but it can be done.

Simple steps for candle safety(MS) Candles are one of the easiest and most effective ways to add aroma and ambiance to a home. While many people would like to use scented candles in their homes, they may be weary of the fire risk. However, candle-related fires appear to be on the decline.
Scented candles are just one component of the larger science of aromatherapy, which is an alternative treatment that uses scents to alleviate physical and psychological disorders. Nurses and doctors at the University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston actually offer classes in aromatherapy to deal with cancer and other ailments. Certain scents can make a person feel more alert, while others may reduce stress and relax a person.
It is estimated that candles are used in seven out of 10 American households and that people spend around $2 billion annually on candles, according to the National Candle Association. Candles can be used for aromatherapy or to make a room feel more cozy. People who are anticipating a weather event that may knock out electrical power also rely on candles as an alternative light source.
Although using candles can lead to fires, the NCA reports that candle-related fires have dropped to their lowest level in roughly 10 years. Data shows candle fires dropped by nearly 50 percent between 2001 and 2010. That’s thanks in part to the industry’s safety standards and consumer education efforts.
According to a Home Candles Fires report issued by the National Fire Protection Association, there were approximately 9,600 accidental candle fires in 2010, the latest year for which figures are available, compared to a peak of 18,900 in 2001. The statistics are based on data reported by the federal government’s National Fire Incidence Reporting System and NFPA’s survey of fire departments.
“We are extremely pleased that candle fires are continuing to drop,” said NCA executive vice president Carol Freysinger. “We believe there’s no question that the industry’s safety standards and educational campaign have been pivotal in reducing candle fires.”
While candle fires tend to peak during the holiday season, when candles are an integral part of holiday decorating, candles are widely burned throughout the year, including during outdoor gatherings in the summertime. To reduce the risk of fire when using candles, consider these guidelines from the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission.
* Trim the wick to 1/4 inch each time before burning. Long wicks can cause uneven burning, dripping or flaring.
* Use a candleholder specifically designed for candle use. It should be sturdy and heat-resistant.
* Avoid drafts, vents or air currents that can cause rapid or uneven burning and excessive dripping.
* Never leave a burning candle unattended.
* Do not burn candles by or on anything that might catch fire.
* Keep candles out of the reach of children and pets.
* Follow the manufacturer’s recommendations on burn time and proper use.
* Don’t touch or move a burning candle or when wax is liquefied.
* Discontinue burning a candle when 2 inches of wax remains.
* Always keep a candle within sight.
* Extinguish all candles before bed or if you feel sleepy. The largest number of candle fires occur in the bedroom.
When used safely, candles make a welcome addition to a home.

How to lessen a pool’s impact on the environment(MS) Few things bring more relief than a swim on a hot day. The cool water of a pool can revive tired muscles and make a sticky body more comfortable. Spending time poolside is one of the more popular warm-weather recreational activities.
To maintain a safe swimming environment, pool water and equipment needs to be sanitary. This necessitates the use of various chemicals to ensure the water is free from bacteria, algae and other contaminants. Pool chemicals and the natural environment are not always a good mix. However, there are ways to reduce the chances a backyard pool will have a significant negative effect on the environment.
Maintain proper upkeep
Chlorine derivatives are the primary sanitizing agent used to keep pool water sparkling clean. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, chlorine is one of the most commonly manufactured chemicals in the United States. Chlorine is used in cleaning products to kill harmful bacteria as well as in the sanitation for industrial waste and sewage. In high amounts, chlorine can be poisonous. Burning and irritation can occur when the skin is exposed to liquid chlorine. According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, chlorine can be very harmful to any living organism in the soil or water that is contaminated by it. Chlorine in the atmosphere can contribute to the destruction of the ozone layer.
The best way to keep chlorine use under control is to carefully stay on top of pool maintenance. Algae blooms or dirty water will require concentrated treatment with chlorine. In contrast, pool water that is maintained will necessitate only marginal levels of chlorine to maintain cleanliness. Routinely test water levels to ensure everything is in order. It can only take a day or two for pool water condition to spiral out of control.
Consider newer alternatives
Ozone and ultraviolet light are two other methods recognized by the EPA for sanitizing water. Homeowners considering the installation of a new pool can look into these alternative filtration systems. Another option is a saltwater filtration system. Salt naturally contains chlorine, and through a chemical process, salt in the filter will convert into chlorine, eliminating the need to handle dangerous chemicals.
Reduce evaporation
Depending on the size of a pool, it will require several thousands of gallons of water to fill. Water is an expensive commodity and not one to be wasted. Yet, leaving a pool exposed to the sun will result in water evaporation. A solar cover or pool blanket can help keep water from evaporating. Some estimates say that covering the pool can reduce evaporation by 90 to 95 percent. Not only will a cover keep water in, but it will also slow down the degradation of chlorine and other chemicals sanitizing the water. Chlorine breaks down more quickly in sunlight.
Minimize energy costs
Running a pool requires increased energy consumption. Filters and cleaning systems can drive up electric bills. Plus, those who heat their pools often find that the venture is quite costly. Energy bills rise dramatically to fuel electrical pool heating systems.
Pool filters should run a certain number of hours each day, usually between 10 and 12 hours. They should not be running constantly unless there is a serious issue that needs cleaning or the system is designed for constant filtration. Energy rates tend to decrease in the evening, so this may be a smarter time to run the filter.
A solar cover does more than just prevent evaporation. It is an inexpensive and environmentally powered method of heating pool water. The cover will intensify the rays of the sun and transfer the added warmth to the water. It will also help lock in the heat and may prevent a certain measure of debris from entering the water, thus cutting down on filtering needs.
Backyard pools are popular and in high demand when temperatures soar. Certain measures can make pool operation safer for swimmers and the environment.
