Last week, Caterpillar announced to its 160 local employees that it was nearing completion of a yearlong consolidation study of its two operations in Sterling and one in Dixon, according to spokes- woman Rachel Potts. The Sauk Valley has not been ruled out, according to the company. “We are not in a position to disclose the potential location of the consolidated operations, except to say that locations considered are in North America,” Potts wrote in an email. “Consolidation of operations is not a result of the performance of the workforce, but rath- er based on the cost structure of the three facilities.” The company expects to finish the study and share the results within 45 days. Potts wouldn’t say how the consolidation would affect employees’ jobs. Anchor, a wholly owned subsidiary of Caterpillar, makes hydraulic hoses and couplings. The ReviewFRANKLIN GROVE

BY DAVID GIULIANI

FRANKLIN GROVE – Farms and well-kept homes line the road from the village to Franklin Creek State Park.

On private property next to the park and Frank-lin Creek, though, are two big piles of junk and four cars, one with miss-ing wheels. They are in a grassy area surrounded by trees. The gate is open, but two faded signs warn trespassers.

Across the road is one of the park’s picnic areas.

Since last month, Lee County’s zoning office has received a number of complaints about the property at 1480 Old Mill Road. It received the first one April 3, said Chris Henkel, the county’s zon-ing administrator. Henkel went out to see the junk piles later that day. Then he took Assistant State’s Attorney Matt Klahn.

On April 4, the county sent a notice to ask the owner, Jason Parks, to clean up the mess in 15 days.

The county got no response, Henkel said.

“We’re acting on it as fast as we can,” Henkel said. “It’s a mess, and it’s in a high-profile spot.”

On May 2, the county submitted information on zoning and health code violations to Lee County Court. The property is

zoned agricultural and is not permitted for accu-mulation of junk, accord-ing to the documents.

“Lee County definitely takes zoning and health code violations seriously,” Klahn said. “We want to do whatever we can to get any problems corrected.”

Earl Thomas, a former Franklin Grove resi-dent who now lives near Nachusa Grasslands, said he was at a local cafe when he heard about the problem.

“I went by and looked at it, and I was shocked,” he said. “I think this started last year, but it’s gotten worse in the winter and spring.”

The mess could pose an environmental hazard to the nearby creek, Thom-as said.

Sauk Valley Media couldn’t find a phone

number for Parks. His mailing address is the Old Mill Road property.

Franklin Creek State Park is a point of pride for the village. In 1970, Winifred Knox donated 100 acres of land near the creek. Through the 1970s, the Natural Land Institute

bought additional prop-erties as they became available, according to a history on the website of the state park system.

In 1981, Franklin Grove residents formed the Franklin Creek Preserva-tion Area Committee. It was the first volunteer

organization in the state to improve land for park purposes through volun-teer efforts, the website said. The state dedicated it as a park in 1982.

County: It’s spring; clean up your messPiles of junk near state park could pose threat to creek

David Giuliani/[email protected] have complained about two junk piles on private property near Frank-lin Creek State Park. Lee County has gone to court to clean it up.

The ReviewSTERLING

BY KATHLEEN A. SCHULTZ

STERLING – The sun was a fuzzy yellow stain in the gray, overcast sky, and a cool breeze was blowing. A clearly irri-tated killdeer ran across a stretch of green grass, recently dotted with dandelions, screeching at the annoying clus-ter of workers tromping around his little patch of prairie, such as it was.

There was quite a pro-duction going on across the road from Crop Production Services Wednesday morning, at the old Double G ranch, and a handful of locals were parked in CPS’s gravel lot for a front-row seat.

The occasion: a little ol’ barn-moving. Except this was no little ‘ol barn. The historic two-story behe-moth was 100 feet long, 34 feet wide. That’s 3,400 square feet trundling up the highway.

It had been lifted off its foundation and tethered to the semitrailer the day before, in preparation for this road trip, a little jaunt just 1.5 miles up the road to its new home at K’s Korners bar and grill, 13030 Galt Road.

Nine a.m. came and went, then 9:15. About 9:30, finally, a little action: The semi on which the massive barn perched began to inch off the grass and out onto U.S. Route 30. “There she goes!” cried an onlooker. Arms shot

up into the air, clutching phones; video began to roll.

Slowly, the trailer made the turn. Oversize load, read a banner on the accompanying truck.

“They got this down to a science,” one watcher said, referring to the Balagna House Moving crew.

The old dairy barn, which once held the Wahl Equestrian Cen-ter’s clothing and tack store, wore its own vestments: a cheery orange Midland States Bank banner, and four American flags flying, one at each corner.

Faster than a tortoise, slower than a hare, it glided along those 2,000 feet like a parade float. By 10 a.m., it was ready for its next turn, at the I-88 intersection, where it headed east.

ComEd, which had dropped at least one of its utility lines, lifted one here, a guy in a huge white cherry picker doing the honors.

No one got fried. Noth-ing slipped off the truck. The guy walking under-neath the barn – yep, underneath it – did not get squished like a stink-bug.

Excitement over, the

onlookers pocketed their cellphones, piled back into their cars and took off. The two dozen or so semis and other vehicles that had lined the road, waiting for the path to the interstate to open, waiting for 30 westbound to open, were set free.

Moving across the street to stand on the barn’s ruined founda-tion, its cement floor still covered with spot-ted teal carpet, gave a long view of the second phase of the move.

Around 10:20, the con-voy reached the bridge over the Elkhorn Creek, and the sky began to spit. By 10:25, the barn had passed that tricky landmark.

Less than an hour later, the old barn was home, on its new corner lot, where its new own-ers, Marion and Andy Younger, will rent it out for weddings, recep-tions, reunions, and any other event that needs a little space.

The Loft. That’s what they’re going to call it. Call the Youngers at 815-626-2988 or find K’s Korners on Facebook for more information.

DIXON – Authorities say the woman whose body was pulled from the Rock River last week drove herself into the water.

Her body was found downstream from her submerged car.

Lee County Sheriff John Varga said investigators Wednesday worked on removing the black box – the data recorder – from the 2002 Pontiac Grand Am of Melva M. Meridith, 56,

of Dixon. They hoped that it might reveal more information, particu-larly some indication of how fast Meridith’s car was moving before it entered the water.

“We’re just trying to get all the i’s dotted and t’s crossed,” Varga said. “We’re still talking to family members and friends, but unfortunately it does look like she drove into the river.”

Meridith’s cause of death has not yet been released, because the coro-ner’s office is waiting on toxicology reports, Varga said.

Her body was pulled from the river April 29 after calls reported a missing person and, later, the discovery of her submerged car near a boat launch at Rock River Estates, a mobile home park along state Route 2 between Sterling and Dixon.

According to a report received by the sheriff’s department, Meridith was last seen driving away from her home in Rock River Estates about 9 a.m. on the day her body was found.

The call reporting her missing was placed just before 5:30 p.m.

At 7:30 p.m., deputies received a report of a car in the river near the boat launch. Upon arriving, depu-ties were able to confirm no one was inside the car. They continued to search the river for its driver, which is when they found Meridith’s body.

According to her obituary, Meri-dith was a rehabilitation technician at Kreider Services in Dixon for 18 years before she retired.

She also attended St. Anne Catholic Church in Dixon and was a volunteer at the Leydig Center.

DEATHS IN ARIZONA

BY CHRISTI WARREN

MESA, Ariz. – One week ago, a memorial service was held for an 11-year-old girl and her mother, a Sterling native, who were found dead in an apparent murder-sui-cide at their home in the Phoenix suburb of Mesa.

According to the Arizona Republic, asphyxiation and a prescription drug overdose contributed to the tragic April 21 deaths of Marcia Louise

Wentzel, 45, and her daughter, Caitlin Elizabeth Wentzel.

Wentzel’s parents are David and Judith Lowe.

Mesa Police Sgt. Tony Landato told the Arizona Republic that the mother and daughter suffered from “debilitating, long-term medical conditions” and that two suicide notes were found in the home, one from Caitlin and another from Marcia.

The mother and daughter were found by Joseph Wentzel,

Marcia’s husband and Caitlin’s father, when he returned home from work, police said.

Neighbors, speaking to the Ari-zona Republic, described Marcia as a devoted and caring mother to Caitlin, who was wheelchair-bound and home-schooled by her mother.

The neighbors also called Caitlin a highly intelligent girl and a vora-cious reader. Her service dog was named Keller, after Helen Keller.

According to their shared obitu-

ary, Marcia, born in Sterling, grad-uated from Sterling High School in 1987 and from the University of Illinois in 1990.

She suffered from an extremely rare neurological disease known as SPS, or Stiff-Person Syndrome. There is no cure for it, and doc-tors still don’t know what causes it. According to the National Insti-tute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, it’s characterized by “fluctuating muscle rigidity in the trunk and limbs and a height-

ened sensitivity to stimuli such as noise, touch, and emotional distress, which can set off muscle spasms.”

Caitlin, too, suffered from an incurable disease: osteogenesis imperfecta. According to the U.S. National Library of Medicine, people with this condition have bones that break easily, often from mild trauma or for no appar-ent reason at all.

CHICAGO (AP) – Com-monwealth Edison’s resi-dential customers will see a 38 percent spike in their electricity bills begin-ning next month, just six months after the company raised rates to help pay for the costs of upgrading the power grid, the company

said Wednesday.The increase came after

the Illinois Power Author-ity, which buys electricity on behalf of the northern Illinois utility, set the company’s per-kilowatt-hour costs at just over 7! cents, up from 5! cents in 2013, ComEd spokes-man David O’Dowd told the

Arlington Heights Daily Her-ald.

That means an average bill of $68 for about 655 kilo-watts of electricity monthly, will rise to about $83 begin-ning June 1, O’Dowd said.

Power costs represent about two-thirds of a bill. The other portion is for dis-

tribution costs, which have been rising.

The average bill increased by $5.50 per month in January after ComEd received permis-sion from the Illinois Com-merce Commission to collect an additional $340 million for distribution, largely to offset its cost to help modernize the

electric grid.Last month, ComEd asked

for another distribution increase starting in Janu-ary 2015. If approved, that increase would cost the aver-age customer about $3 more per month, the company has said.

ComEd and downstate

electricity provider Ameren are undertaking a 10-year, $3.2 billion project to mod-ernize and “storm-harden” Illinois’ power grid to make it more efficient and reliable. That includes replacing aging cables and poles, and switch-ing customers to wireless “smart meters.”

ComEd says residential electricity rates on riseCHICAGO
