Snow on the roof can be troublesome
A snow-covered landscape can be a picturesque sight. However, a roof covered in snow is something no homeowner can afford to marvel at. That’s because accumulating snow and ice very well could push a roof to its breaking point, even if the roof was sound before the winter arrived. According to The University of Arkansas division of Agricultural Cooperative Extension Service, the water content of snow can range from 3 percent for very dry snow to 33 percent for wet, heavy snow. A roof may only be able to support 12 inches of wet, heavy snow before it is pushed to its breaking point. Snow can be quite heavy, weighing around 60 pounds per cubic foot. When heavy snow arrives, homeowners should do their best to safely clear their roofs of snow. The threat of snow causing a roof to collapse has many homeowners floundering. While having snow build up on the top of a house is dangerous, so, too is climbing up on a slippery roof to push off the snow. As winter approaches, many emergency officials urge people to clear their roofs and decks to minimize structural collapse. But how does one do it safely? Steep-pitched roofs tend to be the easiest to deal with snow and ice problems because a snow rake is usually effective. A snow rake is just what it sounds like. It is a metal device on a telescoping pole that can be extended to drag the snow off of the roof. Homeowners may need to use extension ladders to reach taller parts of the roof. A second person can remain below to steady the ladder and ensure it doesn’t tip over on a slick surface. It is not adviseable to climb up on the roof directly and shovel the snow off. The added weight of a person may be all that’s needed to cause a roof to collapse, potentially resulting in grave injury and considerable roof damage. A snow-covered roof also can be slippery, which could result in a person falling off the roof. Anyone who does not feel secure removing snow from the roof can hire a professional service to do so. Just be sure the service is properly licensed and insured. In addition to removing the snow from the roof, here are some winter weather home care tips.
* Clean the gutters to remove any debris so that gutters will not become blocked and form ice dams on the roof. In addition, keep gutters and drains free of ice and snow.* Add insulation to attic floors to prevent heat from the home escaping to the roof and causing ice dams that freeze when snow melts. In addition, make sure the attic is well ventilated so that the temperature inside will remain consistent with outdoors, further preventing snow melt.* Melted roof snow can leak into homes or pool around foundations, causing rot and other problems. Keep an eye open for any leaks.* If you live in an area prone to heavy snowfall, a metal roof may be a good investment. The slippery roof causes snow and ice to slide off. Special features at the end of a metal roof break up the snow before it reaches the ground, preventing large, heavy piles of snow from causing injury when falling to the ground.
Keep pets safe in cold weather Many pet owners enjoy taking their four-legged friends with them when running errands. But when the weather is especially cold and harsh, pet owners may want to leave their pets behind in the warmth and comfort of indoors. There are other tactics to keeping pets safe when the winter arrives in earnest.Keep pets away from antifreezeAntifreeze emits a sweet smell, which is often inviting to dogs and cats. But antifreeze is lethal in small doses, so it’s best to keep pets out of your garage and away from your driveway, where antifreeze may leak. Antifreeze can prove especially harmful to pets if it contains ethylene glycol as the main ingredient. There are safer alternatives, but even the safest antifreezes can be lethal when consumed in high quantities.
Protect their pawsRock salt on sidewalks can effectively melt ice and snow. But rock salt also can be very irritating to pets’ paws. Remember to wipe your pet’s feet when coming indoors after walking on surfaces treated with salt or another melting agent. This will help to remove excess particles and prevent your pet from getting ill when the animal licks its paws clean.Keep pets indoors on cold days
Don’t allow pets outside when the temperature falls below 20 F, as pets are at risk of frostbite or hypothermia when exposed to such temperatures. Puppies, kittens and short-haired pets may be more susceptible to the cold and should be kept in when temperatures dip below 40 F.
Look out for animals seeking shelterOutdoor cats and other animals may choose your car engine as a cozy place to spend the night. A warm engine provides enough heat to ward off the chill. You may have a cat under your hood and not know it. Beep the horn before starting the car to scare the animal away. Otherwise the cat could be
severely injured when the car is started.Do not leave a pet alone in a carIt is unwise to leave a pet unattended in a parked car. It may seem that the interior is warmer than outside, but the temperature in the car can drop quickly. Never leave a pet locked in a car, especially in harsh weather conditions.

Green ways to remove snow
Several inches of snow piled up outdoors may seem like paradise to children eager for a day off from school and a chance to spend all day outside building a snowman. But adults typically have different views on snow that have more to do with shoveling than sledding.
Though nothing can make removing snow fun for many homeowners, those with their minds on the environment might be glad to learn there are some eco-conscious ways to remove all of that white stuff.
While it might not be glamorous, human-powered snow removal remains the best method of removing snow safely with the least impact to the environment. Ashovel and broom may not be the fastest ways to clear driveways and walkways, but they have little impact on the environment. Shoveling produces no toxic side effects that can damage plants, animals and even young children. In addition, shoveling snow is an ideal winter exercise, working most areas of the body while providing a cardiovascular workout.
There are several different snow shovels on the market. Ergonomically designed shovels will help reduce injury to the back and shoulders and could make each pass through the snow more efficient. Another option is snow-plow style aluminum shovels that enable shovelers to plow the snow toward the lawn, saving them the effort of lifting and tossing snow.
Standard shoveling may be easier than using a mechanical blower, especially when the snowfall was not significant. However, snow blowers may be more effective after a particularly heavy or thick snow. Electric snow blowers are better environmentally than gas-powered blowers. If you have solar panels, then no additional energy is needed to fuel the electric blower. However, electric blowers are not as powerful as those powered by gas. If you must purchase a gas blower, opt for one that runs on diesel fuel. This way you can use a more eco-friendly alternative bio-diesel, such as discarded cooking oil, to fuel the snow blower.
When snowfall is not significant, you may not need to shovel at all. Abrasive materials like wood ash and sand can make walkways less slick. Furthermore, dark ash will absorb the sun’s rays and help to melt the snow faster.
Use sand sparingly because it can clog storm drains and add to excess silt in streams and rivers. Other products can be used for traction, including a product called EcoTraction(R) which uses hydrothermal volcanic mineral to provide traction.
If you are like the many who rely on a salt product to de-ice, choose a less harmful alternative. Salt runoff can damage plants and irritate pet paws, so choose a calcium magnesium acetate de-icer instead. Though a calcium magnesium acetate de-icer is not necessarily ideal for the environment, such products are more eco-friendly than salt-based products.
Homeowners who live in areas that get heavy snowfall may want to hire a snow removal company. One truck plowing a neighborhood is better for the environment than several homeowners firing up individual snow blowers. Otherwise, think about investing in a radiant heating system that can be built into driveways. The warm driveway will melt away ice and snow. This relies on electricity, which is not as harmful to the environment if that electricity comes by way of solar power.
Snow removal is a chore few look forward to. But eco-conscious homeowners should know that there are environmentally friendly ways to remove snow.
Prevent slips and falls this winter
Winter is right around the corner. That means that most people will be trading in windbreakers and rakes for heavy coats and snow shovels. Winter can be a beautiful time of the year, but the snow and ice that covers the landscape in a pristine sheet of white can present certain hazards as well.
Walking on ice can be extremely dangerous, particularly to those people who already may have mobility issues, such as the elderly. According to the National Safety Council, slips and falls are the single largest cause of emergency room visits. Slip and fall injuries also are the third largest cause of workplace injuries, says the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
Many accidental falls occur from lack of stability or poor physical health. However, come winter, many falls can be attributed to walking on slippery surfaces covered with snow or ice. To avoid falls on ice, men and women might want to take
certain precautions.
Change the way you walk
Adapting to the slippery conditions could help prevent some of the falls caused by snow and ice. When walking on ice, plant feet with toes facing outward slightly, and then shuffle along. Hunching over a little and extending arms outward will help to lower your center of gravity and also offer a little more stability. Take VKRUWÀDWVWHSVVRWKDWWKHKHHOVand toes of your shoes stay in contact with the ground as much as possible and offer maximum surface contact.
You should not take large strides or move quickly. This can GH¿QLWHO\OHDGWRVOLSVDQGIDOOVRather, leave extra time to get to and fro, especially when walking to mass transit or to and from your car when commuting.
Switch ShoesFlat shoes with rubber soles are more capable of gripping the ice than other types of shoes. Contrary to popular belief, clunky winter boots may make walking more difficult. Try rain boots instead, as rain boots typically have flatter soles. There also are many different types of shoe ice grips on the market that can be added to the soles of shoes. They easily slip on to offer more traction. Whenever possible, try to avoid shoes with already slippery soles or high heels. Carry these shoes with you and change after you
are inside.
Treat walkwaysKeeping on top of falling snow can help alleviate slippery walkways. Use a combination of snowmelt and sand so that you can keep sidewalks clear.
Remove shoes indoorsSlips and falls can happen inside a home as well. Many people have tile or laminate
entryways in their homes, and these entrances can become quite slippery when snow-packed shoes warm up and the snow melts, creating a wet, slick surface. Avoid falls by placing mats by the front door and removing shoes when you enter. Stash a pair of slippers nearby into which you can change.Pack lightCarrying heavy bags can disrupt your center of gravity and contribute to falls. Whenever
possible, travel light or use a backpack to evenly distribute weight to help you walk more easily.
Falls on slippery surfaces can be quite dangerous. Avoid trips to the emergency room for broken bones or abrasions by slowing down, dressing appropriately and walking on paths that have been cleared of snow and ice.

How to reduce home improvement project waste
The home improvement
indus t ry has grown
considerably over the
last several decades, as
homeowners increasingly
took steps to turn their
homes into personal
oases. But such projects
often produce substantial
a m o u n t s o f w a s t e ,
negatively impacting the
environment as a result.
According to the United
States Environmental
Protection Agency, an
estimated 170 million tons
of building construction,
renovation and demolition-
derived wastes were
generated in 2003, a
year when the housing
market was thriving and
homeowners were not
shying away from costly
h o m e i m p r o v e m e n t
projects. With the housing
market once again on
the rebound, the home
improvement industry
figures to benefit once
again. There are steps eco-
conscious homeowners can
take to reduce waste while
improving their homes.
* Save sa lvageable
m a t e r i a l s . S o m e
materials simply must
be d i sca rded when
making improvements
to a home. But many
more materials can be
salvaged. When making
renovations to a home,
separate materials like
lumber, hardware, fixtures,
and even appliances that
can be salvaged from
those materials that must
be discarded. Many
communities are home to
organizations that collect
salvageable materials,
and these materials can
be reused by fellow
homeowners or other
organizations down the
road.
* Speak to contractors
a b o u t r e c y c l i n g .
Contractors working on a
home typically know which
materials can be recycled
in a given area. When
discussing prospective
projects with contractors,
homeowners can mention
their willingness to recycle
materials. Wood is a
versatile material that can
be turned into reclaimed or
composite wood products,
including decks or other
items used around the
home. Old wood being
removed from a home may
even work as mulch, which
homeowners can spread
around their yards to add
aesthetic appeal and protect
plants on hot summer days.
Even asphalt and concrete
can be recycled into new
products, and homeowners
should discuss their
wishes to recycle as many
materials as possible.
* Choose recycled content
building materials. Another
way to reduce home
improvement project waste
is to make use of other
homeowners’ discarded
ma te r i a l s . Recyc l ed
content building materials
are products that include
materials recycled from
previous projects. These
once-sparse materials
are now commonplace,
and labels often include
the percen tages of
p o s t c o n s u m e r a n d
recovered materials used
in each product. Materials
such as drywall, insulation,
kitchen countertops, glass
tiles, carpeting and carpet
padding may include
recycled content, and the
growing popularity of
such products has made
them relatively simple
for homeowners to find.
When working with
contractors, homeowners
should emphasize their
desire to use materials
made from recycled
content. Such materials
are both pleasing to the
eye and the environment.
* Embrace adaptability
w h e n d e s i g n i n g a
new home. Rarely do
homeowners design their
homes with renovations
in mind. When building a
dream home, homeowners
do not consider the
l ikelihood that they
will one day move out
or even outgrow the
home. Estimates vary
considerably with regard
to how long the average
homeowner stays in
his home, with some
suggesting as little as
seven years. While data
collected from the United
States Census Bureau
within the last decade
suggests that roughly half
of all homeowners had
lived in their homes for at
least 10 years.
Homeowners building
new homes should expect
to one day move, and
ensuring their new homes
are easily adaptable is both
financially sound and eco-
friendly. When a home is
built with adaptability in
mind, prospective buyers
won’t have to make costly
overhauls. In addition,
homes built to facilitate
future renovations won’t
produce the same amount
of waste as homes that are
less easily adapted.
M a n y h o m e o w n e r s
e m b r a c e h o m e
improvement projects
as opportunities to turn
their homes into private
sanctuaries. But those
who do so with the
environment in mind can
significantly reduce waste
and still end up living in
luxury.
