THE ARTS AS A CATALYST >A ‘quick and dirty’ intervention that invites local, national and international street artists to Ursus to use the blank facades of the factories and warehouses as giant canvases. This would turn the site into a huge outdoor gallery.

This event could be tied in with a music and theatre festival transforming Ursus into a platform for Art and Culture, whilst layering a destination space onto the existing sites of production.

INCUBATOR SPACE >Meeting the entrepreneurial needs of Ursus, vacant buildings on site will be offered, rent free for one year to entrepreneurs/graduates/local business.

As buildings become occupied, shipping containers could be used, creating a number of innovation hubs throughout the site. These would act to spatially break up the large volumes on the site working towards a more humane scale.

TYMCZASOWE OGRODY >Tapping into the local culture of działka, allotments, gardening and farming, a number of plots on the site are proposed for temporary allotments, or meanwhile greening.

On other plots, a phytoremediating crop is planted and allowed time to remove metals and other toxins from the soil, through a slow healing process.

BIOREMEDIATION AS A CATALYST >One potential outcome of the bioremediation is the exploration of phytoremediators application in other industries - eg. as biomass for energy, or natural fibres in industrial applications.

Connecting with the Entrepreneurial Incubators, this focus could create an area of expertise and innovation within Ursus.

WASTE AS NOURISHMENT >Municipal Solid Waste is harvested and either upcycled or used as biomass, as is Ursus’ sewage. This biofeed, along with biomass from bioremediation crops are converted to energy and fed back to some of the district.

A sort of district symbiosis could be in effect where waste from one actor is used to feed and nourish the other.

NEW COMMUNITY SPACES >With a cleaner Vistula, Varsovians can at last drink potable water from the tap which negates the need for the 110 Oligocene Wells throughout the city. Could these be repurposed as a community space, a play space, a social space?

A PERMEABLE URSUS >Rather than propose a rigid network of roads and paths, this strategy instead proposes putting in place a framework for destinations, allowing users to write their own paths.

This is imagined as a gradual breaking down of the large plots, as they become available - changing the urban grain of the place to one that is of a more humane scale.

LIVEABLE + PRODUCTIVE URSUS >So, could this then become a place to support human habitation and everyday life? Could this become a layered place of habitation, occupation, production, consumption, innovation, creativity, living, growing, cultivating, wishing, hoping, remembering....

An urban synthesis?

INDUSTRIAL HERITAGE >With increasing activity and vibrancy, could restoration and re-purposing of some of the abandoned derelict buildings on site become viable?

Starting from the south of the site, this re-purposing and re-use of Ursus’ industrial heritage could be contagious...

BY-PRODUCT: CLEAN WATER >A byproduct of the waste to energy process is water, which will be fed to a Constructed Wetland in the north of the site. The wetlands plants will metabolise biological contaminants in the water and safely discharge the purified water into the Vistula River basin.

This wetlands is envisioned as the first of a series of ‘district wetlands’ which could cope with the full volume of wastewater for the district.
