ThE MAIN RAw MATERIAL of Metsä Group’s products is renew-able wood from sustainably managed northern forests. We are leading the way in its use: producing pulp, wood products, fresh fibre paper-board as well as tissue and cooking papers. We use every part of a tree as efficiently as possible, which represents sustainability at its best.

Our products are perfect alternatives for those made from non- renewable natural resources.

LIGhTwEIGhT pApERBOARdS reduce environmental impacts as they consume less energy, water and raw material, decrease transport weights and produce less waste. Even so, the paperboards are manufactured without compromising product quality. Our fresh fibre paperboards are also safe to use for food packaging.

STRONG ANd LIGhTwEIGhT wOOd pROdUcTS are manufac-tured efficiently by using less energy and generating less waste. Wood products store carbon during their entire life time.

wE ARE A pIONEER in the sustainable management of forest assets as well as providing services to forest owners. We deliver certified wood and wood energy to our mills and our industrial customers.

FRESh FIBRE pULp is a pure and safe raw material for products such as paper-boards and tissue and cook-ing papers. The by-products of pulp production are used for biomaterials, bioenergy, biochemicals and fertilisers.

cERTIFIcATION INdIcATES SUSTAINABLE FOREST MANAGEMENT ANd USE ThE wOOd wE USE comes from northern

forests where forest growth exceeds their use. Around two-thirds of our Finnish wood comes

from private forest owners. sustainable forestry means forest renewal – we plant four seedlings for

each tree harvested.

We always know the origin of the wood we procure and we ensure sustainable use of forests through third-party

certification. Certification proves to us and our custom-ers that the forests are used legally and sustainably. Only

around 10% of the world’s forests are certified, whereas 84% of the wood used by Metsä Group has international

PEFC or FsC®* forest certification. All the wood we use is traceable and from certified or controlled sources. We promote

forest certification in all of our areas of operation and actively participate in its development.

Certification serves to ensure biodiversity and the preservation of habitats and biotopes typical of forests. In addition, certification

safeguards the rights of people working in forests and ensures that they can continue to be used for recreational purposes.

pROdUcTION pOwEREd BY BIOENERGY

RENEwABLE, wOOd-BASEd bioenergy constitutes 86% of the fuels used at Metsä Group’s mills. As a result of our investments in bioenergy and our improved energy efficiency, our fossil CO2 emis-sions have decreased by 36% over the past five years. To produce bioenergy, we use logging waste such as branches, crowns, sawdust and bark from sawmills as well as waste generated in production at our mills. Our pulp mills are 150% self-sufficient in electricity and they are among the largest producers of renew-able energy in Finland. In addition to our own production, we supply bioenergy in the form of district heat to local commu-nities and as electricity to the grid.

We make highly efficient use of different parts of the tree: we deliver logs to sawmills, make pulp from pulpwood for further processing and produce energy from branches, crowns and bark.

Metsä Group’s mills operate in areas rich in water. surface water constitutes virtually nearly all of the water that we use. Water is reused several times in our processes and is eventually treated carefully before it is returned to natural water bodies. The amount of process water per tonne of produc-tion has decreased by 11% since 2010.

FOcUS ON pREvENTIvE wORk IN hEALTh ANd SAFETYMETSÄ GROUp EMpLOYS 10,500 people and creates jobs in logging and transport companies as well as indirectly in the retail business. We offer employment opportunities particularly in areas far from growth centres. We want to be a fair and open neighbour in our local communities where we cooperate with local organisa-tions, for example, in energy production and water management.

safety at work is our first priority. The lost-time accident frequency has decreased by 15% since 2013. The right attitude and preventive measures are key in improving health and safety at work. All our employees have the right to come to work and leave the workplace healthy every day. Good management lays the foundation for well-being at work and healthy workplace communities. Common practices and systems support management and job satisfaction.
