difference. Countryside Properties

and Home Group are committed to

helping and supporting you to

make those first small steps.

About the Travel Plan A Travel Plan is a package of measures designed to encourage a more sustainable approach to transport behaviour. It seeks to promote sustainable travel opportunities by improving access and encouraging alternative transport choices for residents — such as walking, cycling and public transport.

The South Oxhey Central Travel Plan sets objectives and targets so that a change in transport behaviour can be achieved and is designed to reduce the single occupancy use of private vehicles, where possible, whilst also increasing the awareness and incentives to use sustainable modes of travel.

The contact details for the Sustainable Travel Manager and Travel Plan Coordinator are provided below should you have any questions or queries, or wish to actively contribute to future development of the South Oxhey Central Travel Plan.

Information about the Travel Plan along with details of local bus routes, frequencies and stops and information for cyclists and pedestrians is available on the South Oxhey Central website to provide you with up-to-date information about your travel choices. This information can be accessed at www.lovesouthoxheycentral.co.uk

We will also be undertaking periodic travel surveys to monitor residents’ travel behaviour, assess the transport facilities available and identify potential areas for improvement. We ask that you please take the time to complete the travel surveys when you receive them, in order to participate in shaping the Travel Plan.

Local Walking Routes

The Chess Valley Walk is a linear walk through the Chilterns following the River Chess from Rickmansworth to Chesham. It passes through the beautiful scenery of the Chess Valley and several attractive villages and at times gets close to the clear sparkling waters of the River Chess, one of the Chilterns’ famed chalk streams. It is about 16 km long, but short sections can be followed at a time. Further information including route history, points of interest and a route map can be found at http://www.chilternsaonb.org/uploads/files/WWW/chess_valley_walk_web_version.pdf

The Ebury Way is a 5.6 km traffic free path for walkers & cyclists along the route of a former railway line linking Watford and Rickmansworth. The track crosses the Colne, Chess and Gade rivers and the Grand Union Canal. Cycling is permitted along the whole length but horse-riders are restricted to the eastern section between Moor Lane Crossing and Rickmansworth. A route map can be downloaded at www.threerivers.gov.uk/download?id=30425.

There are many other opportunities for rambles and rides in the Colne Valley area including Chorleywood / Rickmansworth to Gerrards Cross,

The Colne Valley Way and the Grand Union Canal. You can find details of other local walks on the Ramblers Association website at www.ramblers.org.uk/go-walking/find-a-walk.aspx.

The District is criss-crossed by numerous footpaths, cyclepaths and bridleways. If you would like to discover your own route, it’s easy to see where all the Public Rights of Way (RoW) are within Three Rivers by looking at Hertfordshire County Council’s Rights of Way map, which can be viewed at www.hertsdirect.org/rowmap.

Hertfordshire Health Walks

The Hertfordshire Health Walks programme, which is coordinated by The Countryside Management Service (CMS), is a countywide programme of free, led walks. It aims to help promote walking and encourage more people (all ages, backgrounds and abilities) to get outdoors, get active and reap the health benefits.

Walks depart from The Centre on Gosford Lane every Monday at 10am (except bank holidays) and from Bridlington Road (at the end of St Andrews Road) every Wednesday at 10.30am. Visit www.threerivers.gov.uk/egcl-page/health-walks for more details.

Local Walking Clubs and Groups

The Watford & Three Rivers Ramblers Group is centred on Watford and has over 300 members. They offer a full and varied programme of walks, including full day walks (about 10 miles) every weekend, half day walks (about 5 miles) on a weekday once a month and occasional summer evening walks (about 4-5 miles). Non-members are welcome to try their walks before deciding whether to join the Ramblers. Further details can be found on their website at www.watfordand3riversramblers.org.uk.

Cycling

Cycling is the fastest mode of travel for short urban trips. It is also a great way of improving your fitness and with Watford Town Centre, Northwood, Bushey and Pinner all within 3 miles, you could cycle there in less than 20 minutes!

Keep your bike safe and secure by following these easy tips:

When you buy a bike:

• Get it electronically tagged or postcoded

• Buy a good quality lock• Keep a record of your frame

number• Take a photo bike so you can give

an accurate description of it if stolen

When you park your bike:

• Lock your bike whenever you leave it. It only takes seconds to steal a cycle

• Always secure your bike at home – fifty percent of thefts occur here

• Remember to lock the frame and both wheels to a stand or immovable object

Cycle Maintenance

A good bike, if well maintained, can last for years, so make sure you look after yours. There are lots of cycle shops in the area, where you can get your bike checked and repaired or buy any equipment and spare parts that you may need, including:

Driving

Whilst it would be great if everyone at South Oxhey Central could travel by sustainable modes of travel we all accept that sometimes there’s just no alternative to the car. But there are ways to travel by car whilst still saving money and reducing the environmental impact of the trip too.

Be a Smarter Driver

Smarter driving means driving your car more efficiently and producing less carbon dioxide, the main gas contributing to climate change. By learning to drive smarter the average car driver in the UK can save £250-£300 a year. For some great tips on how to become a smarter driver, visit the Energy Saving Trust website at www.energysavingtrust.org.uk/travel/driving-advice

Be a Car Sharer

Do you often drive alone in your car, maybe to work on a daily basis? Could you share that journey with another person? Sharing your journey with another person could half the cost of your parking and petrol. We all share cars regularly, with friends and family, without thinking about it. But do you have an empty seat in your car simply because you don’t know of anyone who needs a lift? There are many local and national car sharing websites that allow you to search for a lift or offer lifts for regular or one off car trips. HertsLiftshare is one such scheme, which is quick, simple and free to join and use. Visit their website at www.liftshare.com/uk/community/Hertfordshire for more details and to sign up.

Why Car Share?

• Saves you money – sharing a daily commute could save over £1000 a year.

• Reduces the number of cars on the roads resulting in less congestion, less pollution and fewer parking problems

• Reduces the need to own a private car and the associated costs

Calendar of Events Every year there are loads of local, national and international events aimed at encouraging us to get active, reduce our car use and look after the environment. Here are just a few events to look out for in 2018:
