FSC Certification
To earn the right for a product to carry the FSC label, every step in the supply chain between the forest and the final product must be FSC Chain of Custody certified. There are 4 types of FSC claims that our products can carry:
FSC 100% – products where 100% of the fiber comes from an FSC-certified forest
FSC Mix – products that are manufactured with a mixture of FSC-certified material with recycled fiber, and/or controlled fiber
FSC Recycled – products where 100% of the fiber is recycled, and a minimum of 85% is post-consumer recycled fiber
Controlled Wood – is wood or wood fiber that does not come from any of the following controversial sources:
1. Illegally harvested forests
2. Forests harvested in violation of traditional and civil rights
3. Forests in which high conservation values are threatened
4. Forests that are being converted to plantations or non-forest use
5. Forests in which genetically modified trees are planted
CARB
California Air Resource Board (CARB) regulations ensure that the composite boards, you are purchasing have very low formaldehyde emissions. Panel manufacturers, distributors, fabricators, importers and retailers share in the responsibility of maintaining a transparent chain of custody through to the end use consumer. Please check www.arb.ca.gov for updates and detailed explanations.
ECC Certification for Composite Panels
ECC Certification is available to individual manufacturing plants and requires an on-site qualification audit and subsequent annual audits. Unfinished composite panel products must first comply with the stringent California Air Resources Board (CARB) formaldehyde emissions regulation before being considered for other ECC criteria. Qualified plants must then meet at least three of the following requirements.
Carbon Footprint – The plant shall demonstrate that the panel’s carbon store offsets its cradle-to-gate carbon footprint as determined in kg-CO2 equivalents of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Each plant shall use the CPA Carbon Calculator to determine if a panel performs as a carbon sink resulting in overall net carbon storage.
Local and Renewable Resource – At least 85% of total annual wood fiber used shall be sourced within 250 miles (402 km) of the manufacturing plant.
Recycled/Recovered – Use a minimum of 75% recycled or recovered fiber; OR at least 50% recycled or recovered fiber AND a minimum of 5% post-consumer fiber. Percentages shall be calculated on a weight basis as measured in bone dry tons (bdt).
Sustainability – The plant shall document that greater than 97% fiber furnish brought on-site to manufacture panels is either converted into panels or other non-waste products.
Wood Sourcing – The plant shall hold a valid assessment and certificate from a certifying agency recognized by CPA such as the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC—Controlled Wood Standard or Chain of Custody Standard) or the Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI—Fiber Sourcing Standard).
Our Green Commitment The Sierra environmental pedigree and commitment extends back 27 years, we have been certified by FSC since 2003 and in that time our supplier base has grown to include over 50 FSC Certified suppliers.
The NHLA reports that there is more than twice the amount of commercially viable hardwood available now than in 1957… a tribute to excellent forestry practices!
Our products have won recent environmental awards, Bullfrog Power provides the power in our buildings while using proximity lighting as well as powering our hybrid cars.

LEED
Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design is an internationally recognized mark of excellence, LEED provides building owners and operators with a framework for identifying and implementing practical and measurable green building design, construction, operations and maintenance solutions.
LEED certification provides independent, third-party verification that a building, home or community was designed and built using strategies aimed at achieving high performance in key areas of human and environmental health: sustainable site development, water savings, energy efficiency, materials selection and indoor environmental quality.
We have LEED accredited staff members throughout our divisions. An increasing number of our products are qualifying for LEED points. But before you select a product for your next LEED project confirm in writing what LEED standard is being used for that project.
The recognition by LEED of different resin types for the production of composite boards is in transition. Currently we are in the middle of this transition and because of this timing it’s possible to be working in one of two different LEED standards. Some projects that have been slow to develop may have been initially proposed under LEED 2009 and newer projects under LEED “v4”. To select the right composite board product for your project, you must know the version of LEED being used, then source the composite board appropriate for that version of LEED.
A) LEED Version 2009 Gives points only to NAUF products used for low-emitting materials credit under LEED 2009 for Commercial Interiors and LEED 2009 for New Construction and Major Renovations for projects registered by June 1, 2015. Sierra has a variety of suppliers that offer NAUF products in PB, MDF, and hardwood plywood.
B) LEED “v4” Gives points only to CARB NAF and ULEF exempt products. CARB 2 compliant products and NAUF products are not eligible for a LEED “v4” point. Therefore projects registered to LEED “v4” on or after November 20, 2013 will offer LEED credit to IEQ 4.4: Low-emitting Materials for NAF and ULEF CARB exempt panels. Sierra has a variety of suppliers that offer ULEF and NAF products in PB, MDF, and hardwood plywood.
