Sustainable Management Community
Nowadays, most people are guided toward a consumption of electronic devices. The digital
age and the new technologies of information and communication technologies (ICTs) by
digital devices has increased dramatically worldwide. Today's society has added to your life
devices until recently were not necessary, and perhaps even some are questioning whether
they are strictly necessary. It's true. These devices have greatly facilitated the daily lives of
many companies and individuals around the world, to communicate from one end of the
planet to another, no longer a problem, thanks to these technologies. The digital age and the
new technologies of information and communication technologies (ICTs) by digital devices
has increased dramatically worldwide. Today's society has added to your life devices until
recently were not necessary, and perhaps even some are questioning whether they are
strictly necessary. It's true. These devices have greatly facilitated the daily lives of many
companies and individuals around the world, to communicate from one end of the planet to
another, no longer a problem, thanks to these technologies.
The generators of these electronic devices have become big companies, with an extremely
large market. Companies like HP, Acer, Dell, Lenovo, Asus, Toshiba, Apple and Samsung
lead the market of computers and smartphones. About 80% of the world population owns a
cell phone, of those, about 400 million have a smartphone and a tablet, while about 1.5
billion people have a computer and used over two billion internet. The market is growing
day of day and these companies are innovating their products quickly, this implies that
technologies go out of fashion or become obsolete within a very short time.
This step fashion, it generates far the competitiveness of electronics companies, in an effort
to conquer the market taking new appliances or more advanced models, any minimal
modification having a new model, which leaves almost obsolete before. Advertising
campaigns encourage the client to consume impulsively purchase only focusing on the new
features that may have the devices.
Today's society is directed to a disproportionate consumerism often where you may not
need any specific equipment for the individual, but because of the great reputation
3
advertising, these are purchased. This causes thousands of people to have an excessive
amount of electronic devices and often have to discard the oldest or useless.
Most electronic devices do not have any biodegradable component, in contrast, are highly
harmful chemicals to living things and pollute the environment. The discarded equipment
have different outcomes, some are resold in a secondary market, others are deposited in the
garbage and some are taken to places where stored for different purposes.
In most countries of the world there are a lot of companies involved in recycling of
electronic devices, in the case of Costa Rica there are few, Fortech is one of them, this
company is dedicated to recycling waste electrical and fluorescent. When these devices are
not recycled in a proper way, are often deposited in makeshift places of course recycling. In
these places the regenerative working craft, which are mainly engaged in cable sheathing,
this practice is highly injurious to health, since these devices release toxic chemicals to
health and the environment.
In developed countries such as the United States, the number of devices that are purchased
is proportional to the number of discarded electronic devices. In the best cases these wastes
are collected by authorized and processed in treatment plants and metal recovery. But the
reality is different. Most waste is sent from these countries to developing countries,
especially India, China and West African countries like Ghana, Nigeria and Ivory Coast.
These countries sell second hand or proceed to waste recovery techniques unsuitable; an
example is burning the device.
But when there are a big number of electronic devices, these are simply discarded in
neighborhoods and communities, on vacant lots or worse in the rivers. This causes a direct
pollution to the environment, especially since these devices are highly polluting. This
usually happens for many reasons, one of them may be having little environmental
education and other principal inhabitant is little or no community management to these e-
wastes.
In a country like Costa Rica underdevelopment can’t expect that in every community there
is a recycler of these electronic devices, nor do municipalities are fully responsible for
4
these. That is why communities must implement self, strategies for proper recycling of this
waste.
It is critical to implement campaigns in the community to collect this type of device, where
the citizen has the disposal facility somewhere nearby and then this is recycled in the best
way, and in the first instance protecting the health of citizens and the environment. Also
you should plan a campaign of environmental education in these communities, maybe this
way you can create a society reflection on the great problem of consumerism
disproportionate electronics.
A sustainable community management must go beyond recycling electronics, must be
supported by the entire community, using campaigns with the idea of the three R's, Reduce,
Reuse and Recycle. It also must implement environmental education programs for all
citizens, not excluding, showing the passing reality our planet today and needs to
implement measures to reduce, reuse of resources.
Enact the importance of saving electricity and water, maintain good communication with
the city to try to end the problem of wastewater, implement recycling campaigns, and many
other actions, should be done if you get to have a sustainable community with the
environment.
In our country it is difficult to guide a sustainable community to clean energy such as solar,
cogeneration, heat transport, geothermal, hydroelectric and other, as these involve
economic effort unreasonably high. But some companies, some people and a few state
actions, have implemented clean energy projects, although isolated from a sustainable
community.
A good strategy is implemented by the municipality of the village of "Settimo Torinese" in
Italy; this reduces the tax on real estate to implement those reforms at home, with the goal
of reducing the consumption of energy resources.
A great proposal and is developing the village is sustainable "green gap" in Italy. It is a
mega development project, which is located north of Italy and consists of a large city and
nestled among piles on a green surface. On top of that garden, will stay residences,
5
entertainment, shops and laboratories. This is a project of Ecocity, which implies that it is a
city designed on ecological principles; the eco-towns are a great idea to try and approach to
sustainable development.
