Generally CSR and Sustainability are used interchangeably these days, through there is a distinction. ◦ CSR has more of an internal focus – (direct

impacts) - carbon footprint, responsible workplace, ethics etc.

◦ Sustainability is more about the external focus (indirect impacts) - solving the world problems through business contribution- energy conservation, landfill reduction etc

Difference between CSR and Sustainability

CSR generally deals with four areas:

Page 7: Sustainability & Csr

7

►Reduce - reduction in the use of resources by providing energy efficient systems and water conservation measures

►Reuse - the reuse of resources such as renovating an old building as opposed to tearing them down to build another decreases resource demand

►Recycling – use of recycled materials decreases new resource demand and keeps resources out of landfills

Resource Efficiency■ Using solar energy for electrical generation and heating water■ Rainwater collected for non-potable use■ Skylights providing natural lighting■ Heat recovery from exhaust to heat water or convert to cooling power■ Promote car poolingWaste Minimization■ Recycle paper waste■ Reuse pallets, plastic cans and metal barrelsGreen Procurement■ FSC and PEFC Certified■ Using water based inks only■ Work waste haulers whose eco-friendly waste treatment system is

based on solar energyGreen Certification■ Sustainable Green Printer (SGP)

The SGP Partnership recognizes the following sustainable business practices as guiding principles to ensure continued viability and growth:◦ Employ, wherever and whenever possible, materials derived

from renewable resources or with low environmental impact, maximizing recycling and recovery efforts with efficient utilization of renewable energy.

◦ Encourage the adoption of changes within the supply chain by strongly recommending the use of raw materials that do not threaten or harm future generations.

◦ Educate the customer and ultimate consumer regarding the benefits of a restorative economy.

The SGP Applicant will progress though a detailed review before becoming a certified SGP Printer. The review is composed of the following five steps:• Initial application – concerning EHS compliance and a

Sustainability Policy• Supplemental application – concerning Sustainability

Management system and Continuous Improvement project (with a proposed goal in “SMART” format)

• Pre Certification Review ( also called the Desk Top Audit) – a “pre-audit” review of selected, relevant documents and procedures

• On-Site certification audit – actual site visit by a third party, SGP trained auditor

• Completion of any Corrective Action identified in the certification audit
