• Buildings are responsible for 40% of US carbon emissions and 9% of total world emissions.

• Building natural gas and electricity use represent over 95% of UCSB’s carbon emissions.

• Energy use and green building are tightly linked.• New buildings must beat Title 24 by 20%. LEED Existing Buildings must be

at least 17% more efficient than average buildings of their type.

• UCSB has taken a greenhouse gas emissions inventory since 2004. Goals to reach 2000 levels by 2010 and 1990 goals by 2020.

• 3% away from 2010 goals, need to account for future growth• Total emissions have crept upwards since 2004 due to new lab

buildings, but energy intensity has decreased.

•Photovoltaics on Carillo, Bren, and soon on Rec Cen II•Combined heat and power at Bio II•Solar hot water at selected dorms; Rec Cen plans to install for pool•Exploring on-site wind production as technology advances
