SUSSEX UNITED

METHODIST CHURCH August 2018

Being Free

Summertime is about free time. Freed of the restraints of winter, which can last all the way through the

Midwestern spring, we are free to be outdoors, free to enjoy lakes and streams and backyard pools, freed from

those cumbersome tundra-fashions we are forced to wear for nearly half a year. Between Memorial Day and

Labor Day we are free to attend any number of family reunions, graduation celebrations, weddings, picnics,

fairs and festivals. But as they say, "Freedom isn't free."

The apostle Paul wrote, "Though I am free and belong to no one, I have made myself a slave to

everyone." (I Cor 9:19-23) The essential irony of freedom is that those who are freest are those who are

connected to and committed to as many people as possible. "To the Jews I became like a Jew," says Paul, "To

those under the law I become like one under the law . . .To the outlaws I become like an outlaw . . . To the weak

I become weak . . . I become all things to all people." Because, this is ultimate freedom: to become as many

things to as many people as we can, so that by all means we might bring people into fellowship with us and with

Jesus. John Wesley echoed this when he directed the members of his Methodist societies to "Do all the good

you can, by all the means you can, in all the ways you can, in all the places you can, at all the times you can, to

all the people you can, as long as ever you can." Because ultimate freedom is experienced in fellowship with

Jesus Christ and "all the people you can" manage to gather together.

There's an old Swedish proverb: "Shared joy is double joy; shared sorrow is half sorrow." Shared

freedom is double-freedom, but it's also about doubling down on being a servant to all . . . "by all the means

we can." When we use our free time creatively to bring others into our fellowship with Jesus, we become freer

ourselves. When we feel free to become all things to all people, we can be using all possible means to free as

many others as we can. Freedom isn't free, but it feels even better when we can use it to free others.

Dear Members of Sussex United Methodist Church, Thank you for donating dresses for my Personal Project for school and helping the girls on the Pine

Ridge Reservation. The drive was a huge success and I was able to collect 109 dresses! This meant that Worldwide Hunger Relief received so many dresses that they were able to let girls

in several communities on the Reservation choose dresses to wear! On the last day of my school year, I found out that I got an A on the project, so thank you again for your support!

Sincerely, Lexie Snyder ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Size should be from 25” x 36” to 30” x 40”.

Giving Funds to the Church Without Giving Cash

Amazon’s sister website Smile.Amazon.com offers the same goods, prices and shipping with a big bonus. If you sign on to Smile.Amazon.com and choose Sussex United Methodist Church as your designated charity a percentage of your Amazon purchases will be directly donated to our church. Just be sure you choose the church in Sussex, WI as there is another Sussex UMC in another state!

Scrip gift card purchasing is a great way to benefit the church. There is a six page list of participating retailers that will sell you gift cards then donate a portion back to our church. You can get a copy of the Scrip vendors from the table outside the offices and choose your gift cards. Then give me a list along with a check made out to SUMC for the total and I can order the cards for you. Or, sign on to Shopwithscrip.com and set up an account for yourself. Make your account Presto Pay and order your cards online. Our church enrollment number is FC24B7A136863. You will need this number to designate your orders go to SUMC. Scrip will then take the correct amount of your purchase out of your account and deposit the profit right in our SUMC checking account. I will process your order and deliver your cards to you either way. Before I can process orders I do need a large enough quantity to cover shipping so the more people that order the more often I can order and the more profit we can make. We designate Scrip profits to specific needs within our church.

Drive. Give. Serve. Be it in the city, suburbs or the country, every day across Southeast Wisconsin seniors need a way to get to the doctor, grocery store, library, or other places they can no longer drive themselves. Drive. Give. Serve. It’s three easy ways to help solve one of our community’s biggest problems - senior transportation.

Give. Contribute Gas Cards, Financial Support, and More! Looking for a unique way to give back? From collecting gas cards for deserving volunteers, to allowing employees an hour off work to drive a senior to the doctor, there are many ways to help!

Serve. Unable to Drive but Want to Help? There are many ways to offset the need for rides! You can help someone in need by delivering groceries, running errands, or serving as a “bus buddy” to help get around town.

PRAYER FAMILIES

The purpose of the prayer families is to share our concern and support at times other than during a crisis. Ways to do that are to include the person or family in your prayers during the week. You may wish to let them know that they are in your thoughts by sending a note, talking to them at church or a telephone call. The names are chosen at random, but sometimes seem by design, in that it has come at a particularly appropriate time for them.
