Dear SWEPers,It is a great pleasure for ESN Minho to receive you in our cities. Welcome!Romans, Castilians and Burgundians, the early SWEPers, have been gathering in this region for the past centuries. Braga, the oldest city of Portugal, was founded by the Romans 2000 years ago. Guimarães, the first Portuguese capital, saw the marriage of a Castilian princess with a Burgundian knight, the parents of our first king. The history of the SWEP region is one – so are SWEPers. We are proud to host this event in the year in which our network celebrates not only its 25th anniversary but also the 5th anniversary of ESN Portugal and the 3rd anniversary of ESN Minho. The Organising Committee worked for the past months to bring SWEPers back to the cities where they gathered before, but this time to celebrate multiculturalism, learn with other SWEPers and build the network. We are ready to receive you. Are you ready for SWEP Minho 2014?

João PintoPresident of the Organising Committee of SWEP Minho 2014.

ESN Minho is the section of Braga and Guimarães, responsible for representing the needs and rights of foreign and exchange students at the University of Minho. Our organisation also promotes and motivates local students to enrol in an international exchange pro-gramme, helping them in the process. Moreover, ESN Minho aims at encouraging volunteer-ing and active citizenship and promoting the debate around youth rights in Europe. We are still a recent section which will commemorate its 3rd Anniversary during the SWEP, but we have grown and we are getting stronger every day. We have just hosted the Portuguese Council of National Delegates (the most important National Platform), and for the first time we have one member at the National Board, the Main Coordinator of ExchangeAbility and a PR of SocialErasmus. As you can see, we bet on the involvement of our members on the international level to overcome the usual gap between the local reality and the interna-tional decisions so we can grow stronger from the very beginning. Every year we create a true family with the local and international members in our cities, fighting stereotypes and promoting diversity. That is the image we promote and our goal is to create a stronger connection with the local society. With ludic and social activities we can relate our international students with the reality we face and we all gain something in the end. Welcome to our region, to our cities, to our university and to our family!

João Costa (President of ESN Minho)

BRAGAWith more than 2000 years of history and located in the North Region, the city of Braga is the district capital and the biggest urban area in the Minho Region. The city is known as the “Portuguese Rome” or “Bracara Augusta” because of its roman foundations. Braga is also known as the “City of the Archbishops” due to its concentration of religious architecture and for having two archbishops. This religious tradition is particularly strong during the Holy Week, with the scary farricocos, and during the Saint John Festivities. It is not possible to think of Portugal without the existence of Braga and each visitor will attest it.With almost 180.000 inhabitants, Braga is a dynamic city with an intense economic activity, especially concerning trade and services, education and research, construction, IT and new technologies, tourism and several branches of industry and handcrafts. In 2012 Braga was the European Youth Capital (EYC) and this was the most important event the city hosted in the last decade . This recognition awarded by the EU is the certification of the city ’s importance, development and strength of its youth. Being Braga one of the youngest cities in Europe, the activities developed within the context of the EYC were the boost the city needed to put itself on the map of youth activities all around Europe.Braga is also the headquarters and main campus of the University of Minho. Hosting SWEP Minho this year is also an excellent celebration of the 40th anniversary of our university which is climbing the international rankings year by year.

The second campus is only 25 Km from Braga, in Guimarães, the first Portuguese Capital. The

European Capital of Culture 2012 and European City of Sports 2013 is one of the

most important historical cities in Portugal. Its medieval centre is an UNESCO World

Heritage Site due to its singularity and uniqueness. Among Portuguese, the city is commonly

known as the “birthplace of Portugal”, a sentence written on the walls of the castle.

As well as Braga, it is a city that bets on youth programs and on the promotion of sports and

mobility with a strong identity and way of living. Its inhabitants are deeply connect with the

city and their costumes, as well as the local football team, Vitória de Guimarães. This

connection between inhabitants and the city is well seen during the annual festivities called

“Festas Nicolinas”.During this night, the entire city gets together as a big happy family,

celebrating their unique tradition with hundreds of drummers of all ages.

Locals are proud of their city and ESN Minho is happy to host about a hundred Erasmus

students in this lovely historical site.
