Supporting the International Centre for Human Development (IC4HD) Background

The International Centre for Human Development supports countries of the Global South to help them incorporate human development concerns as an integral part of planning processes and policy making. India’s experience in using human development parameters as inputs in developing policy provides excellent examples from which other developing countries can learn.

The International Centre for Human Development offers high quality training and research opportunities to government officials, policy makers, academicians and other development practitioners and aims to encourage south-south dialogue and understanding on key human development issues.

Project Strategy and Interventions

Towards achieving these objectives, the Centre seeks to (a) provide policy advisory services (b) promote south-south cooperation and (c) conduct analysis of development issues from a human development perspective.

Developments so far

Till October 2015, representatives from close to 40 countries participated in activities of the Centre.

• 51 participants from 20 countries in the Asia–Pacific region were trained on human development

• 30 policy makers from 9 African countries were trained on energy access and human development

• 11 countries in the Asia–Pacific region were provided with technical advisory services related to the preparation of National Human Development Reports

• 17 fellows from 12 countries have been awarded Human Development Residential Fellowships at the Indian Institute of Advanced Study, Shimla

• Organizations from 15 countries shared experiences on Institutional Innovations for Women’s Livelihoods in a consultation organized in collaboration with Self Employed Women’s Association (SEWA)

• 38 participants representing the union government, state governments, research organisations, media, international agencies and the United Nations participated in a Roundtable on Direct Benefits and Basic Income Transfers

• 14 young change makers from 6 countries in Asia participated in a workshop on Youth and Human Development. Participants engaged in a guided experience sharing workshop and articulated the challenges they faced in dealing with governments, communities and with young people

• 25 experts, policy makers and practitioners from SAARC countries participated in the Study Week on Accelerating Progress on SAARC Development. The findings from the Study Week were consolidated and released as the New Delhi Outcome Statement

• 35 officials and experts from Sikkim, Meghalaya, Karnataka, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh and Bhutan participated in a workshop on Open Data for Human Development

• Organized a public lectures by Prof. Boaventura de Sousa Santos on the ‘Which kind of state can deliver which kind of development?’ and a public lecture by Dr. A. K. Shiva Kumar on ‘Twenty Five Years of Human Development’

Looking to the future

• Governments of the South integrate human development concerns integrated into policymaking

• National capacities strengthened on human development

• National HDR Teams in Asia-Pacific supported through technical advisory services during the preparation of National HDRs
