Pushing artistic and social boundaries to provide an alternative way of hearing, seeing, and thinking about a symphony orchestra — that’s what the Chicago Sinfonietta has become known for over the last 25 years. Each concert experience fuses inventive new works and diverse voices with the classical tradition to entertain, transform, and inspire.

This season, Music Director Mei-Ann Chen and the orchestra deliver one-of-a-kind concerts with the same artistry and invention that won the First Place ASCAP Award for Adventurous Programming last season. We’ll bridge hemispheres, cultures and genres that connect all of us to the world.

Bold music. Dynamic artists. Global perspective.

There are times when we reflect on those we have loved and lost, when we contemplate questions of life, beauty, and mortality. In Latin America, these somber reflections are balanced by joyful celebration of the gifts left

to us by the departed. Our Day of the Dead concert finds that balance as well, combining the mournful and the exuberant in ways that are equally reverent.

The lessons of Dr. King are shared across cultures and generations, and echoes of his message continue to inspire the global community. Our tribute concert notes this universal connection, from the American south to the plains of Africa, the Pacific islands and here in Chicago, where

Florence Price was the first African-American woman composer to have a work performed by a major orchestra.

The cry for freedom expressed during the Arab Spring resonates with similar awakenings throughout human history. Arabic melodies find their counterpart in African-American folk music, and Mozart himself told a tale of freedom from bondage

in his Turkish-inflected Seraglio. Together, they speak to the eternal quest for liberty shared across the globe.

The pulsing urban environment in which we live, work, and play surely shapes us and frames our perspective. This concert explores the history and mythology of the places we call home. Here in Chicago, some of the world’s most significant architectural structures form the backdrop of our daily lives. Four of these modern marvels inspire the newly commissioned ChiScape, where each building is celebrated with its own movement by a different composer.
