WELCOMEWelcome to the latest edition of Support, Ayrshire Cancer Support’s bi-annual publication, packed full of our latest news, highlights and forthcoming events.

As Ayrshire’s leading cancer support organisation, our wide range of FREE services continue to be in very high demand.

Our professional services are provided by our team of specialists, health professionals, support staff and volunteers, including: GP on our board of trustees, cancer nurse manager, accredited counsellors, fully qualified complementary therapists, volunteer retired GP, fully qualified Mindfulness teacher, fully qualified podiatrist, trained drop-in volunteers and, trained volunteer patient transport drivers.

Inside this publication you will find details of many of our free services, including: one-to-one counselling, support groups, workshops, complementary therapies, hospital complementary therapies for oncology in-patients at Ayr and Crosshouse Hospitals, bereavement support, carer support, drop-in centre and therapeutic garden, information and advice, cancer nurse support and, our patient transport service.

These services can be accessed by anyone in Ayrshire affected by a cancer diagnosis. People can drop-in to our Kilmarnock Centre (no appointment necessary) to make an appointment or to arrange patient transport over a friendly cuppa, or call us on 01563 538008 or 01292 269888.

For those who have already visited our Kilmarnock centre with its lovely drop-in area, information library and therapeutic garden, you will know how much of a relaxed and homely feel it has. We would love to create the same kind of centre in Ayr and have launched our #Home4Cancer fundraising appeal to help make this a reality for all those affected by cancer throughout South Ayrshire and parts of East Ayrshire. We will continue to deliver counselling and complementary therapies from Wellington Square until those premises are sold, and we are able to create a new, more accessible, bright and friendly support centre in Ayr to replace it, modelled on the centre we have in Kilmarnock.

This #Home4Cancer funding campaign is in addition to the fundraising we carry out to fund our core services. If you, as an individual, team or company can assist with this capital appeal please do get in touch as you can really make a difference to people locally.

As a self-funding organisation we must generate all of the income required to be able to provide all of our services FREE of charge. Our small team of fundraisers is supported by a large number of volunteers, in a wide variety of roles. If you can help our fundraising team in any way please let us know; from organising your own events, helping at our events, counting our collecting cans, bag packing at supermarkets, volunteering in any of our eight shops, to selling our Christmas cards…

I’d like to thank all of our volunteers and supporters so very much, because it is with your dedication and desire to help others that we can provide emotional support and practical help for people across Ayrshire affected by cancer.

Leaving a gift in your will is one of the biggest differences you can make to help support the lives of Ayrshire people with cancer. When we look back on the key moments and people in our lives it’s only natural to start to think about the future and how we can leave our mark on the world.

We think of our loved ones, our community and we also think about how our impact can reach even further. By choosing to leave a gift in your will, there’s a way to leave something behind for loved ones as well as those that may need it the most.

However large or small, a fixed percentage of your estate or a monetary gift, your decision will make it possible for us to continue Ayrshire Cancer Support’s vital services.

We understand that this is a big personal decision, but by taking these small steps now, you will have a big impact for years to come.

To take advantage of Free Will Month in partnership with McClure Solicitors, telephone Ayrshire Cancer Support in the first instance to arrange an appointment with a solicitor from McClure’s.

My name is Estelle Little. I’m 44, wife of Johnny and mother of 2, Morgan 16 and Struan 12. I am a chartered surveyor based in Glasgow. I grew up in Paisley and my family moved to Ayr thirteen years ago and we love living there.

I was diagnosed with triple negative breast cancer in October 2017. I found a large lump on my left breast and knew instantly it wasn’t good news. After being swiftly checked out by my GP I was referred to Ross Hall with private healthcare through my work and I was diagnosed that very day. I made the mistake of going myself for various reasons and was of course broken to hear the news. The news of the cancer being triple negative with lymph node involvement came a few weeks later. Triple negative is a rare form of breast cancer, forming around 15% of breast cancers, mainly found in black women and younger women. The cause is unknown, whereas other breast cancers are fuelled by hormones. It tends to be more aggressive and harder to treat.

I underwent ten chemotherapies with a few varieties as the cancer wasn’t responding to treatment. I thereafter had a mastectomy and removal of my lymph nodes. My pathology wasn’t good. The chemo had been ineffective and 11/12 of my lymph nodes were cancerous. I was advised I had a really high chance of the cancer returning.

I was keen to get back to a normal routine rather than waiting for the cancer to come back. I was due to start radiotherapy early July 2017 but the weekend before I was due to start I found lumps in my neck area. It was confirmed the next day the cancer had spread and was now incurable.

After debate it was decided for me to postpone radiotherapy and go back onto chemo. I had another 11 treatments before the neck nodes started getting bigger and the decision was taken to start me on a course of radiotherapy at this time. After more scans it was shown to have spread to the breast bone, spine and more nodes below my chest. I also had red blemishes in the skin area known as lymph vascular invasion. I had 25 radiotherapies finishing in February this year.

Simultaneously, I had been looking into clinical trials and a dear friend of mine who is a cancer scientist recommended one with both an immunotherapy drug and a personalised vaccine. After investigation I found this trial is being administered in the UK at St Bartholomew’s Hospital London. My oncologist agreed this would be my best course of action rather than going back onto chemotherapy. However, the irony was I needed fresh cancer, measurable cancer for the trial that hadn’t under gone any radiotherapy treatment.

So from February it was a waiting game with 6 weekly scans. End of April, I got the node spread I needed on the right side under my arm. After many visits to St Bart’s and another blast of radiotherapy for a fracture in my back I have now started my trial. It’s tiring with weekly visits to London, but of course I hope it will be worth it and you would do anything, wouldn’t you?

I was first introduced to Ayrshire Cancer Support by a neighbour who had had breast cancer. I had no idea it existed and I must have walked past the premises on Wellington Square hundreds of times. She suggested I go for some complementary therapies, which I did, and I also hooked up with a counsellor. At the time I didn’t need much counselling, I really was dealing well with matters in my head. I have a strong family unit and an amazing friend support network. I was on a mission to get back to normality and get through what I called a forced sabbatical from work. However, that wasn’t to be the case and when I received my terminal news I was so glad that I had had some meetings with Ann before I really needed them.

We had further chats and I found I could open up about my fears for the future, becoming actually unwell, feeling ill, and how it will affect my family. Of course the counselling isn’t just open to me, the patient, but the wider family and is used by my husband, Dad and sister.

For me Wellington Square is a handy location, but the premises are well functional but not destinational. I was encouraged to visit ACS in Kilmarnock if I ever needed to take some time out. As any Ayr person will know Killie is a long way away - but I took the trip. Well now I really have retreat envy. It is just day and night to what we have in Ayr! I visited Maggies in Glasgow when I was undergoing my radiotherapy but really it is too far for me to drop in. Killie is an option now and I’m delighted to have visited it but with a busy life even still, wouldn’t it be great to have a facility like this in Ayr?

With cancer diagnosis on the rise it seems to me such an important service to the people of South Ayrshire to have a facility that matches or even supersedes Killie.

Let’s hope people like you will help Ayrshire Cancer Support by organising your own fundraising events in your work, schools, or community groups, to help raise enough money to accelerate this dream.

There is no doubt the funds we raise will help towards their new centre as well as expanding their counselling and therapy sessions for cancer patients and their families.”

Sandra McCall, Chief Executive at Ayrshire Cancer Support, said: “We are delighted that we have been chosen by South Ayrshire Council employees as their charity partner. It’s really encouraging to know that the employees appreciate the work we do for Ayrshire people affected by cancer and we look forward to cementing our relationship.”

If you see me around chat to me, as a busy mum of three young boys, I like nothing more than getting to know people and helping them where I can.

Service available to anyone with a cancer diagnosis and up to one year post treatment.

I graduated in Medicine from Glasgow University in 1978 and came to work in Kilmarnock in 1983 as a GP, at 12 London Road, where I stayed until I retired at the end of 2014.

I valued the time I spent working with cancer patients and wanted to do something which would be of use. I had practiced hypnotherapy throughout my working life for anxiety symptoms, pain relief, phobias and sleep problems and most patients reported this to be beneficial.

I was then delighted, when after speaking to Louise at Ayrshire Cancer Support, that I was able to provide relaxation therapy as a volunteer complementary therapist. Referrals are made by the counsellors employed by the service who decide on an individual’s suitability and needs.

I find this very rewarding and am pleased that most clients find this helpful. I hope to be able to continue to provide this service for as long as people find it useful.

MY STORYby Heidi MacKenzie

I would like to start by saying that 2018 was not a very good year for me. After nearly 45 years of a very happy marriage, my husband Fraser died unexpectedly, then later in the year I discovered that I had ovarian cancer. I had a full hysterectomy in November and from April to July 2019 I had chemotherapy and radiotherapy. I am very glad to say that I am now cancer free.

To help with my ongoing recovery I was recommended to try Reiki, I must admit I had never heard of this but wanted to try it, and this is where I met Caroline who is one of the Complementary Therapists at Ayr Centre. She explained to me what Reiki was and the beneficial effects it could bring.

After having a major operation on my lower back I have experienced a lot of pain there. After only 4 sessions of Reiki I was feeling so much better. The pain in my back has gone and I feel that my

walking has improved. I can walk much further than before without needing to sit down every hundred yards, which is making my little dog Maxi very happy.

The sessions themselves made me feel very relaxed, I could feel that my body was beginning to heal itself and my overall well-being has improved so much.

All I can say is thank you Caroline and I would recommend your wonderful Reiki Treatments to anyone else affected by cancer.

I would like to thank the volunteer drivers who took me to the Beatson for my treatment and also brought me to my therapy appointments in Ayr. I don’t know how I would have managed without them.

Ayrshire Cancer Support is a wonderful charity who provide great services. I am so grateful to them.

MY STORY TEAM BETHby Emma by Eva Beattie

Having been diagnosed early this year with bowel cancer, and spending large amounts of time in hospital, I had four months of gruelling treatment, and it was extremely hard. The more I looked at articles online the worse I became so my husband suggested I stopped reading them. Although the hospital was fantastic with my care during my treatment, I felt considerably lonely, isolated and confused once I was told I was cancer free.

Finding it hard to cope with my own recovery process I started to struggle with everyday life. I wanted to return to work and bring back some normality into my life. I quickly realised that returning to work was a mistake and I was struggling with tiredness, extreme anxiety and guilt. My friend told me about Ayrshire Cancer Support. After a few weeks of struggling I made the decision to visit the Kilmarnock centre. I met a lovely girl who gave me a huge smile, invited me to sit down and she listened to my worries.

What people don’t realise until they are personally affected, is that cancer takes away all your identity until you’re only seen as the person who had cancer. Everyone gives those head tilted poor you face - not at Ayrshire Cancer Support. I was not asked a barrage of questions, I was not asked whether I had cancer, in fact it was the first time I didn’t feel like a victim.

The girl sat and patiently listened as I poured out the last four months’ worth of fear, anxiety and frustration. After a cup of tea and many tears (mine, not hers) she gently asked me how she could help. We spent time talking about the services offered and it was refreshing to find out just how much help there was. I had reflexology with Caroline and relaxation with Dr. Clark.

I cannot thank Ayrshire Cancer Support enough for all their support. I am now back at work and visit the drop in centre when I can.

Many thanks, you’re amazing.

Emma

Beth is our inspiration. She was kind, gentle, a little bit quirky! Born with Neurofibromatosis Type-1 (NF1), a rare genetic condition, life could be challenging but she was pretty much smashing it. Until she turned 3 that is. NF1 causes tumours to form on nerve endings and can occur anywhere on the body. For Beth that meant a brain tumour. Despite surgery and chemotherapy we lost our best little buddy and all her loveliness in 2016.

Since her diagnosis we have been working to raise awareness of NF1 and also some funds along the way for some wonderful charities. We started off with a super £20,000 for Glasgow Children’s Hospital Charity followed by an astonishing £53,500 for Ayrshire charity, Memories are Better than Dreams. 2018 saw us raise over £14,000 for the lovely Scottish charity, Kayleigh’s Wee Stars.

This year we have chosen to raise money for Ayrshire Cancer Support; another charity which supported us through the most difficult of times. I’m sure many will have benefited from the wonderful work that this charity do.

We are intending this to be our last year of fundraising and would love to finish it off by reaching £100,000 overall so our goal is £12,500... with your help we can do it!

VOLUNTEERING

We simply could not continue without our volunteers; you enable us to provide the FREE transport, advice, counselling, complementary therapy services and support groups that local cancer patients need.

Ayrshire Cancer Support provides over 12,000 FREE patient transport journeys each year, collecting patients from their home in Ayrshire, taking them to their hospital appointments, and back home again; many to daily appointments in Glasgow. Patients may be elderly, do not drive or own a car, may live in a rural area with poor transport links or feel to unwell to drive following their treatment.

If you have spare time and own a four door car, please consider helping us by driving cancer patients to their hospital appointments. A mileage allowance is payable to reimburse costs and support training is provided.

Another area where we are always seeking new volunteers is in our charity shops; our retail volunteers are dedicated and tireless in their efforts to help Ayrshire Cancer Support. Every hour they donate to us is precious and truly makes a difference, every day.

Your time is a great gift to donate, and you can volunteer as little or as much time as suits you.

Other opportunities exist in fundraising; helping us carry out can collecting at events, monitoring and changing cans placed in local businesses and shops, helping at Ayr Racecourse, selling our Christmas cards and calendars, helping at events, e.g. to help sell raffle tickets at our Ladies Day Lunch at Trump Turnberry in November and other similar events throughout the year.

Volunteering gives you the opportunity to meet new people, use your free time in a useful way, add to your CV, help prepare your Personal Statement for university or college AND help others.

You don’t need any special skills for most opportunities, just to be keen and have a willingness to get involved.

Please visit our website www.ayrshirecs.org and click on HELP to see our Volunteer Policy and application forms or call 01563 538008 or 01563 475025 or email [email protected]

AS AYRSHIRE CANCER SUPPORT RAISES THE AWARENESS OF OUR SERVICES WITHIN AYRSHIRE, WE ALSO RAISE THE DEMAND.Our patient transport service provides free transport to hospital appointments by anyone diagnosed with cancer. We are now undertaking over 1,100 patient journeys every month.

If you can help us transport patients to hospital and have the necessary skills to make their journeys safe and comfortable, please get in touch. Many people volunteer a day a week or even more. A mileage allowance is payable to reimburse costs associated with using your own car.

Thank you to all of our fantastic drivers who selflessly provide this service.

Retail & MarketplaceMARKETPLACE NOW OPEN 7 DAYS A WEEK

On the 21st June we opened Scotland’s largest charity shop, The Marketplace, at 2 Fowlds Street, Kilmarnock. Roo Irvine, from BBC TV’s Antique Road Trip, visited the store recently and was thrilled at what she found. She told us, ‘I just love it, love it - it’s a fabulous shop!’

This unit was gifted to us rent free for two years when our original Kilmarnock shop was flooded and had to temporarily close for refurbishment.

Having this space meant we could sell much larger items and the “boys in the van”, Gordon and Andy, worked tirelessly to get the shop filled for our opening, and continue to do so each week.

As it was such a large space to fill we had to think imaginatively how to use it - thus ‘the Markets’ were born. Sellers pay a £15 donation to rent their table, they can then sell car boot items; vintage; bric-a-brac; paintings… whatever has been lying in their attics for years!

The Marketplace has been a huge success so far with some traders coming from as far as The Outer Hebrides, Glasgow and Carlisle! It’s a great store for a browse around the stalls and our shop, picking up some amazing bargains,

whilst doing your bit to save the planet and also helping people living with cancer locally. We also have a coffee bar, public toilets and free car parking at weekends.

Come along to the most talked about Fair in Ayrshire. Featuring over 50 car-boot, craft, vintage and antique ware, the Saturday Fairs are a place to find a bargain - or that unusual object for your home. With free parking, a coffee bar, toilets and a real eclectic mix of sellers - it’s a place you want to visit regularly.

To reserve a stall visit Eventbrite, www.ayrshirecs.org or email [email protected]

DON’T DUMP IT - DONATE IT!Why should you donate clothing, bric-a-brac,

furniture and curios to Ayrshire Cancer Support?

Apart from the fact that the money raised from your donations stays locally, providing services in your

area - we also ensure that we treat your donations with respect. If we can get a higher price for an item, we

will try - by selling through our Ebay store or in-store.

We believe that every item donated deserves respect.

We can also arrange uplifts of donated items from your home.

every week? Did you know you can also sell your items on Ebay and chose to donate (through Ebay) a
