PowerUp Results in New York CityMore than 5,600 students in grades 6 and above used PowerUp during the 2019-2020 school year across New York City Public Schools. Diverse TextThe challenge in developing PowerUp was creating a learning experience that can meet the diverse needs of a wide range of students while remaining relevant to their lives. Our goal is for students to see themselves and their communities in PowerUp.

From Harlem by Langston Hughes to folktales from Asia; from Eleven by Sandra Cisneros to Malala’s speech to the UN; the texts featured in PowerUp represent a diverse ethnic makeup in both characters and authorship. Our original texts and the imagery associated with them were created with authenticity and multi-cultural diversity in mind, with care taken to utilize both the look and techniques of the associated cultures.
