Delivering Efficiency to Severn Trent

An example of how we at NIVUS were able to help resolve not only an application problem
but furthermore a costing problem atSevern Trent Wanlip STW
Project kept getting delayed due to project costsTo use normal flow meters, flumes or mag meter meant a dramatic change to the layout of the works and the civil costs were vast
Problem
SolutionBy using NIVUS flow meters incorporating a winch system no change to the works layout was needed this in turn gave a project SAVING of over £0.5 Million
A Partnership to find the solution
Open Channel Flow Monitoring
No need for a Flume / Venturi
•What is the cost of a Flume ?•What is the cost of installation ?•What is the annual maintenance cost ?
How do NIVUS do it ???
So what are the costs…
Flume Cost Flume 6m x 400mm wide approx. £12,000Installation 2 men 2 daysOver pumping required to keep channel dry
NIVUS CostNivus Flowmeter approx. £5,000Installation of sensor & Transmitter 1 man ½ dayOver pumping 1 hour.

Part & Fully Filled Pipe Measurement
No need for a Mag Meter…No need to replace a Mag Meter
•What is the cost of a Mag Meter •What is the cost of installation
???

Replacement Costs
A MID with a diameter of 700 mm had to be replaced.
Old MID
OCM Pro pipe sensor with ball valve
• Mag meter cost £ 2,000• Installation Cost £ 20,000• Pipe needs to be shut down• Crane required
NIVUS Pipe sensor cost £3,000Installation 1 man ½ dayNo pipe shut down

Data Connection
LowLow--Power Data Logger With Power Data Logger With GPRS Transmission To D2WGPRS Transmission To D2W
• Very long battery life.• Parameters can be set remotely.• Connection to measurement data via
the Internet.• D2W Internet portal.• Can be used in Ex Zones 1 & 2• Alarms.• Reporting.• Control.• Export data to interface with other
Systems.
Cross Correlation ProfilingHow do we measure so accurately ?

Cross Correlation Principle

• One of the most modern and efficient measurement principles to understand the flow velocity is the Correlation Principle.
• (Correlating two similar picture samples). For this application is that the reflectors (particles, minerals or gas bubbles) are available in the medium.
• Then through a transmitted ultrasonic pulse and the received echo, they become stored as received echoes or pictures.
• By correlating both stored signals familiar reflectors are recognised. Since the reflectors move with the fluid their different positions are visible or measurable in both pictures.
• The flow velocity of the fluid can be calculated from the reflector’s progressive movement by taking into account the transmission angle of the ultrasonic signal and the pulse repeat rate.
